PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Brandon Sutter’s shootout goal lifted the injury-depleted Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers for their 10th win in eleven games.  Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland was suspended five games for a hit on Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader.

NOTE: The Ottawa Senators-New Jersey Devils game is recapped in “Canadian Corner”.

CSNCHICAGO.COM: Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith is having a season worthy of the Norris Trophy.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: The Kings are being cautious about Jonathan Quick’s return, which could be during the first week of January.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Fortunately for the Kings, Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens have done a fine job filling in for Quick, so the Kings can take their time in easing Quick back into the lineup.

TWINCITIES.COM: The Minnesota Wild have place Josh Harding on LTIR until December 27th to allow for a minor adjustment for his MS treatment.  Harding and the Wild had anticipated this, taking pains to explain it’s only a minor procedure and not a relapse in his condition.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: After a slow start to this season, Stars ageing defenseman Sergei Gonchar has returned to form.

PHILLY.COM: Flyers forward Brayden Schenn has no memory of a vicious hit he received from Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson, but otherwise he was only slightly hurt. Wilson, meanwhile, faces a disciplinary hearing with the league today.

CSNNE.COM: Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli wasn’t pleased with winger Brad Marchand’s  ring- and cup-kissing antics during their recent loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Chiarelli said he discussed the matter with Marchand.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Marchand should spend less time trash-talking and more time improving his performance this season.

DETROIT NEWS: The injury-ravaged Red Wings have recalled Jordin Tootoo.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Since hiring interim coach Peter Horachek the Florida Panthers are 10-8-1 and are only six points out of a playoff berth.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That might explain why GM Dale Tallon hasn’t pulled the trigger on more moves of late.

NBC SPORTS: cites speculation from TSN’s Bob McKenzie suggesting Las Vegas could be a target for NHL expansion.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Cue the outrage over the NHL favoring southern non-traditional hockey markets over popular Canadian ones.

  1. The last thing we need to add to the NHL is more teams, the talent level is watered down enough already. If anything, they need to eliminate a few teams such as Nashville, Florida Panthers, Carolina and Phoenix.

    • That’s exactly right there should be an outrage. First I agree there should be less teams not more, but if the NHL insists on expansion put the teams in Canada. I am from Boston and I truly believe all long term profitable USA expansion efforts have been exhausted. Put a team in Vegas ten years from that moment it will be Atlanta Thrashers part 2. Still not convinced Phoenix will work long term. I do think Nashville is a decent market, they just need a buzz Seth Jones is a start though.

      • Get used to it. There WILL be expansion.

      • I’m from Australia but now a transplanted Minnesotan and Wild fan, and we are hopeful to be rid of Dany Heatley and his ridiculous contract with hopes of signing Thomas Vanek, even though we have some youngsters we need to sign as well. Also, signing Backstom to another 3 year deal for $10 mill was a huge mistake and how long will Harding last is the big question as well as him being the #1 goalie, for now, he playing out of his mind right now!

  2. Oh and please Chiarelli trade Marchand three years left at 4.5M for a punk. Never liked Marchand and his attitude got worse after Seguin was traded. He should have at the very least been fined for that hit on Monahan the other night. God I wish Glencross got a piece of him after that hit. But of course Marchand was a no go for a fight. The only fight I remember him in was against Subban and I wished they both kicked the hell out of each other, very similar characters. Subban obviously more talented though.
