Game recaps, Henrik Zetterberg sidelined by back injury, Avalanche coach Patrick Roy no fan of advanced stats, Sabres on pace for dubious league record, and the NHL reaches a settlement with Wayne Gretzky.
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: Dwight King netted the game winner in a nine-round shootout to give teammate Martin Jones the win in his first NHL game as the LA Kings edged the Anaheim Ducks 3-2.
DALLAS MORNING NEWS: The Dallas Stars blew a three-goal lead but Antoine Roussel’s penalty shot goal carried them to a 4-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen made 47 saves for the victory.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Jeff Skinner had a three-point game (including two goals) and Justin Peters kicked out 26 shots as the Carolina Hurricanes rolled to a 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Nick Foligno’s between-the-legs goal stood up as the winner as the Columbus Blue Jackets edged the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0. The win proved costly, however, as goalie Sergei Bobrovsky left the game in the third period with an apparent left leg injury.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Jackets didn’t seem too concerned post-game over the status of Bobrovsky’s injury, which suggests it might not be serious. Hopefully there will be more details soon.
NOTE: Games involving Canadian NHL teams are recapped in “Canadian Corner”.
MLIVE.COM: Henrik Zetterberg joined Pavel Datsyuk on the Detroit Red Wings injured list. Zetterberg is out at least two weeks with a herniated disc.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Losing Datsyuk was bad enough, but Zetterberg is a double whammy. This provides some of their young players (like Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar) an opportunity to step up and prove themselves.
DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy admits he’s not into advanced stats like Corsi and Fenwick.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Advanced stats are a valuable way to evaluateperformance, but they’re not the end all and be all.
BUFFALO NEWS: The Sabres are on pace to score the fewest goals in a season in the post-expansion era.
USA TODAY: The NHL reached a settlement with Wayne Gretzky over money owed him for losses incurred during the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy. Gretzky was a former coach and part-owner of the Coyotes.
