NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – February 7, 2012.

A breakdown of the Blackhawks defensive woes…Flyers need to improve goaltending and defense…Cam Fowler struggles through sophomore slump…Danny Cleary reaches milestone…Blues need more scoring…Coyotes down Red Wings…Panthers confident in defense despite injuries…Sabres coach injured in practice…Hurricanes place Anthony Stewart on waivers…Wild re-sign Nate Prosser.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: A high goals-against average, poor penalty killing, low hit differential and no shutouts are the factors behind the Blackhawks poor defensive play this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Which is why the Blackhawks are seeking a top-four defenseman.

CSNPHILLY.COM: The Flyers need a better effort from their goaltenders as well as their defense if they hope to go deep in this year’s playoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: They’re stuck with their current goalie tandem of Ilya Bryzgalov and Sergei Bobrovsky, but I do expect management to bolster the defense, though Flyers fans shouldn’t get their hopes up expecting a top-two defenseman.

Fowler struggles for solutions to sophomore slump.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Cam Fowler is struggling this season to regain the form of his rookie season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s not unusual for a talented defenseman like Fowler to struggle in his sophomore season. He’ll improve over time.

MLIVE.COM: Red Wings forward Danny Cleary has overcome obstacles to reach his 800th career NHL game.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hard to believe that it was only seven seasons ago he joined the Red Wings on a tryout in hopes of saving his career.

STLTODAY.COM: The Blues are on the hunt for scoring help from within.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Management could make a trade, but that’s going to depend on what’s available and how much they can afford to spend.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Coyotes goalie Mike Smith made 30 saves, backstopping his club to a 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Despite injuries to Ed Jovanovski and Dmitry Kulikov, the Florida Panthers remain confident in their defense.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff suffered three broken ribs during a freak collision with Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold during practice yesterday.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: The Carolina Hurricanes have placed forward Anthony Stewart on waivers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: He could be an affordable pickup for teams looking for depth at forward.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: The Minnesota Wild yesterday re-signed rookie defenseman Nate Prosser to a two-year, one-way contract extension worth $1.65 million.

  1. Hey Lyle, I read somewhere and i will try to source it, But Have you heard anything baout Montreal trying to acquire Chris Stewart from Saint Louis and Shane o’brien from Colorado? Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  2. Anthony Stewart is sure traveling around. He is cheap, big, and nets a few. So I’m thinking the intangibles are lacking. It seems like a pretty low risk move for the Habs to pick him up to test out while we can try to move Moen, Darche and Nokelainen. If we don’t like him, we waive him. I know people will respond that we need to keep the roster open for young guys. But it’s not really a try out for the young guys if we are playing them on the 4th line. To give them 5 minutes a night in a checking role when they were drafted to play top 6 is not a fair try out. Plus, Stewart has some upside. Bring him in and let him know his options are shrinking… get it together or get used to riding the bus. Give him a chance to prove his worth. Just a thought…

  3. @ Casey, I agree that the habs should look at Stewart. he will cost them nothing but some cash (and not very much of it!)

Good on Dan Cleary for being able to bounce his career back on track and make a significant contribution to a top oganization. We need more stories like this than of guys who never make it and never get back on track.

@ MikeG – I heard that too… but my guess any deal for Stweart will ahve to include PK Subban (St. Louis gave up Erik Johnson for Stewart).

Who would have thought that the Flyers need goaltending after the signed Bryz to a century long contract that takes him past minimum retirement age…..

  4. I can’t believe both zac Hamil and Anthony stewart cleared waivers, thought a team looking for depth would take a chance.

  5. Nik K,
You are likely right and so that mean no to Chris Stewart. No trading PK for Him. I am Surprised Anthony passed through waivers.
It will be interesting to see what the Habs do if they win their next three games, esp if Pice keep Playing the way he has!
