Bruins re-sign GM Peter Chiarelli.

Bruins re-sign GM Peter Chiarelli.

BOSTON HERALD: The Bruins have re-signed general manager Peter Chiarelli to a four-year contract extension.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: No surprise there. Under Chiarelli’s tenure, the Bruins have risen to perennial Stanley Cup contender.

THE GLOBE AND MAIL: Jeff Blair asks, “In the wake of NFL concussion settlement, will NHL follow suit?”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Considering the NHL’s sad history of ignoring its former players, I’m not holding my breath.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Former Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula is enjoying a few final practice spins in Detroit before joining the Tampa Bay Lightning for training camp. Filppula signed with the Lightning this summer.

MLIVE.COM: Red Wings center Darren Helm is encouraged by the progress in his recovery from a back injury, but doesn’t expect to be ready for the Wings season opener in October.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Helm’s status could ensure Cory Emmerton, oft-mentioned in trade rumors this summer, could be retained.

STLTODAY.COM: Blues fans are likely to love pesky forward Maxim Lapierre, who signed as a free agent this summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lapierre’s one of those players you hate, unless he’s playing on your team, then you overlook his annoying tactics if they help your team win.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Andrej Sekera is happy to have a clean slate with the Carolina Hurricanes, who acquired him via trade this summer from Buffalo.

YAHOO! SPORTS: Former NHL defenseman Tomas Kaberle is reportedly close to signing with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kaberle’s performance and value really declined after he was traded by the Maple Leafs in 2011.  I daresay his NHL playing days are over.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: The Philadelphia Flyers have re-signed Brandon Manning to a one-year, two-way contract.

  1. “Kaberle’s performance and value really declined after he was traded by the Maple Leafs in 2011. I daresay his NHL playing days are over.” LOL – That’s because Leaf fans always WAY overvalue their players. He didn’t fall off, its just people stopped seeing him through blue and white tinted galsses

  2. I suppose that would include Chiarelli who gave up a boat load to get him?

    • We won the cup, in spite of him ! Good Lord, he was an accident looking for a place to happen EVERY time he stepped on the ice!
