NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – January 14, 2012.

Sidney Crosby provides an update on his status…Penguins snap six-game losing skid…Devils debt woes continue…Ryan O’Reilly a draft steal…Jason Arnott steps up for the Blues…Hurricanes finding improvement under head coach Kirk Muller…Rick DiPietro’s season likely over…Dan Carcillo has season-ending surgery…Lightning lose sixth straight game.

POST-GAZETTE.COM: Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby addressed the media yesterday regarding the status of his recovery from post-concussion symptoms. The Penguins, meanwhile, snapped a six-game losing streak, downing the Florida Panthers 4-1.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby has made some progress in his recovery, but it doesn’t appear he’ll be making a return to the lineup in the near future.

NEW YORK POST: The New Jersey Devils debt problem may be about to boil over, as team owner Jeff Vanderbeek is having trouble resolving the team’s $80 million debt.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The NHL took over ownership of the struggling Phoenix Coyotes in hopes of eventually finding a new owner to keep the team in Phoenix, but weren’t willing to take over the Atlanta Thrashers to keep them in Atlanta. Will the league be forced to take over ownership of the Devils soon? Stay tuned…

O'Reilly a rising star.

DENVER POST: Ryan O’Reilly, who was selected in the second round of the 2009 draft, is looking like a steal for the Colorado Avalanche.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: O’Reilly was overlooked for this year’s all-star game, but if he continues to play in the coming years as he has this season, he won’t be overlooked again.

STLTODAY.COM: 37-year-old forward Jason Arnott has been a key factor in the St. Louis Blues improvement this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Arnott can stay healthy over the rest of the season, he’ll silence his critics (like me) who believed his contributions to the Blues this season would be minimal.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Life is returning to the Carolina Hurricanes dressing room, and they’re improving on the ice, under head coach Kirk Muller.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This improvement comes too late to save this season, but perhaps it bodes well for next season.

NEWSDAY: Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will have season-ending sports hernia surgery.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo will miss the rest of the season due to knee surgery.

TAMPABAY.COM: The Lightning lost their sixth straight game, falling to the Washington Capitals 4-3.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I think we can safely say the Lightning’s playoffs chances are now dashed.

  1. Wonder if the Isles would consider buying out DiPietro if there is an amnesty period with the new CBA. I know it’s a boat load of money but they have been known to do stuff like this before. Heck, Yashin is still on their books.

  2. @claysbar – NYI currently have $14M in cap space available. Amazing as it may sound, RD is not impacting their ability to acquire additional players.

  3. I realize that, I meant to simply get the guy off the books. I don’t think he’s been truly healthy for a month at a clip since signing that ridiculous contract. Poor management is what is impacting their ability to acquire additional players LOL.

  4. The Devils look pretty screwed. They probably will lose Parise over the summer and the way it’s going (as well as other players), they might have to do salary dumps to get within a budget. Maybe they’ll have a miraculous playoff run to save the franchise like they did in 1995.
