Canadiens crush Red Wings…NHL’s Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry heyday over?…Questions over Tim Thomas’ White House snub could overshadow All-Star game…All-Star captain Zdeno Chara keeps mum over his first selection…Marian Hossa, Chicago’s unassuming star…Sharks roller coaster season not affecting coach…Revisiting the James Neal trade one year later…Lightning fire their mascot performer….

DETROIT NEWS: The Red Wings suffered a humiliating 7-2 defeat to the lowly Montreal Canadiens in last night’s only NHL contest.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was obvious the Wings had mentally checked out for the All-Star break in this one. Fun fact: At one point the Habs had a six-goal lead over the Wings, and the last time there was a six-goal spread in a Wings-Canadiens game was December 2, 1995, a date which lives in infamy in Habs history. See if you can guess why without Googling it.

Is the great "Crosby vs Ovechkin" rivalry over?

TORONTO STAR: Damien Cox believes the Sidney Crosby-Alexander Ovechkin rivalry is over, due to Crosby’s career-threatening concussion injuries and the decline in Ovechkin’s performance.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If so, it was a helluva ride while it lasted, one that ended far too soon.

CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggerty believes Tim Thomas might have to further explain his reasons for snubbing the White House ceremony honoring the Bruins Cup championship, lest it ends up overshadowing the All-Star weekend.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Good luck getting Thomas to talk about it. If he doesn’t want to discuss it further, he won’t, and the media will have to find something else to write about.

OTTAWA SUN: All-Star captain Zdeno Chara won’t say who he’ll select with his number one pick in the All-Star draft.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Please pick a Sedin, please pick a Sedin, please pick a Sedin…;)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Adam L. Jahns profiles Marian Hossa, the unassuming star of the Blackhawks.

MERCURYNEWS.COM: The Sharks roller coaster season isn’t a threat to head coach Todd McLellan’s job security.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Mike Heika re-examines the James Neal trade nearly one year later.

TAMPA BAY TIMES: The Lightning have fired their “Thunderbug” mascot performer after she sprayed a fan with silly string in a recent game.

Oh the mess that was Mario Tremblay.

  2. Coof says:

    I was at that game.

What a mess. A beer salesman for a GM and a four line player with a HUGE ego cinderella’d into a coaching position.

  3. Terry says:

Did you really have to ruin the fun by bringing up that day. I still swear at my Tv everytime I see his (i don’t like speaking his name) ugly face on RDS throwing his 2 cents about hockey, like he knows what the hell he’s talking about. He’s the prime reason that Montreal SHOULDN’T have a french speaking head coach.Dumbass…

  4. Alex says:

Isn’t spraying silly string what you’re supposed to do as a mascot?

Spec, great line about Chara picking Sedin, then Julien could match him up against the other twin. Just imagine the giveaways due to instinct of one passing to the other, that’s why Chara should pick Daniel. What will be the story line if Big Z doesn’t pick Thomas first? My opinion, he picks Seguin 1st.
It took me a full second to recall that day in ’95 and I’m embarrassed it took so long.

I had thoroughly enjoyed that Habs game on tsn last night, despite goes miller trying to find anything to bring down the dominant performance by the Canadiens. He tried jinxing prices shut out, talking about Subban non stop on the bench, talking up clearly for being a +1, and more. That guy must work for CBC too. Great game by the Canadiens. They went hard to the net for almost all of those goals and that appears to be the style the team is shifting too. Good for them and the locker room. Eric cole is probably the best signing Montreal has made in over a decade. I can’t believe the speed and hittin power he has to go along with his offensive abilities. Just a great player. Always hated his chippy edge and Hab killing talents when he was in Carolina, loving his play now.

Also, interesting note by Ferraro last night: Desharnais was a undrafted FA by the Canadiens, was leading the AHL in scoring before being called up or good, has officially supplanted Pleks as first line center. Unbelievable for a guy who’s 5’7″ on a good day. Have to wonder if Pleks becomes trade bait as Eller is rounding into form and will be a lot cheaper to sign. Just food for thought. I usually watch my Hab games in French but wanted to hear any trade chatter lol.

  8. gravitymike says:

Trade Eller, he’s an immigrant and wants school prayer to be recited in Danish, right smielman.

  9. Mats says:

That piece Damien Cox wrote feels like yet another fluff piece to attract readers over a non issue.

Ovechkin is done after one slow season where entire team bombs? And why are journalists so keen to write of Crosby? He was glowing hot coming back, i am sure hes fine once hes allowed to sit down, relax and not face the same irritating questions.

  10. SmielmaN says:

Lol. Gravity mike – I haven’t heard that yet but if he does ship him out! Lol. I was pretty fired up that day and I know a lot of ppl would be upset with that comment but, hey, free speech is for everyone not just te new immigrants right? I’ll have a formal statement on my twitter account within the hour. Lol.

Ok, to be honest, I don’t use twitter at all.
