NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – July 11, 2012.

Update on the latest NHL-NHLPA meetings, Sabres Luke Adam looks for fresh start, Mike Modano to be inducted in US Hockey Hall of Fame, two teams seek assistant coaches, and more.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: NHLPA director Donald Fehr and player rep Manny Malhotra called yesterday’s NHL CBA negotiations “business-like”, “appropriate” and “very productive”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not to be cynical, but those words will have more meaning if they’re uttered in late-August or early-September.

Adam hoping for better sophomore season with Sabres.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Sabres forward Luke Adam is looking forward to a fresh start after a rookie season which began well but finished with him playing in the minors.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE: The Blackhawks announced the hiring of former Montreal Canadiens GM Pierre Gauthier as their new director of player personnel.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Gauthier’s critics blame him for the Canadiens poor performance and the circus-like atmosphere around the team last season, so this hiring raised eyebrows.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Former NHL great Mike Modano will be inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.

NORTHJERSEY.COM/CSNWASHINGTON.COM: The Devils and Capitals are both in need of assistant coaches.

PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: Shelly Anderson with a profile of new Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who joined the club as part of the return in the Jordan Staal trade last month.

NEWSDAY: Another effort is afoot to construct a new arena for the NY Islanders, whose lease with their current venue expires in 2015.

  1. After reading the amount of money that the Isles need for a new stadium, you’d think for that kind of money they’d be able to build a floating arena and sail it to NYR and NJD games. Either that or go old school L.O.D. and fly that bad boy everywhere. Sorry, it’s early.

  2. So the trade is Bergevin to Mtl for Gauthier. Mtl wins hands down as in guathier’s time here showd definite question marks in the ‘player developement’ of the Habs players….just saying…

  3. Ohhh and at least Malholtra implies the two sides are being civil….good start….

  4. I think Gauthier is just miscast as a GM. He does good work scouting and drafting but struggled evaluating NHL players and “running” the team… Can be a good hire if he is confined to his area of expertise

  5. One way or another a new arena has to be built for the Islanders. It would be a shame for this team to have to move in a few years. This is a former dynasty that is on their way back up the ladder. I think this arena thing is holding them back a bit in terms of bringing in free agents and helping draw bigger crowds.
