NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – July 17, 2014

Updates on Semyon Varlamov and Tyler Ennis, plus the Sharks re-sign Jason Demers, Brandon Pirri, Chris Butler and Jordan Caron.

DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov suffered a “very minor ankle injury” training in Switzerland.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Sources confirm the Sabres have re-signed Tyler Ennis to a five-year, $23 million contract, though it has yet to be confirmed by the team. The Sabres also re-signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a two-year contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like Ennis got pretty much what I expected he’d get. 

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: The Sharks avoided salary arbitration with defenseman Jason Demers, re-signing him to a two-year, $6.8 million deal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Demers was the Sharks’ last remaining free agent. They now have 23 players under contract for 2014-15 with just over $6 million remaining in cap space. 

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: The Florida Panthers re-signed forward Brandon Pirri to a two-year contract.

STLTODAY.COM: The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Chris Butler to a one-year, two-way contract.

BOSTON HERALD: The Bruins have re-signed forward Jordan Caron to a one-year, $600K contract.

    • Does this open him up to a deadline trade to a contender?
      I can’t see him sticking around Buffalo for the duration of this contract, so why sign him for so long??
