Latest on the Sharks, Avalanche, Rangers, Capitals, Coyotes, Blackhawks and more.
MERCURYNEWS.COM: In the wake of the San Jose Sharks re-signing Joe Pavelski to a multi-year extension, GM Doug Wilson acknowledged he’s had talks with ageing Sharks stars Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle, who are due to become unrestricted free agents next summer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Sharks re-sign that trio, don’t expect long-term deals like Pavelski got. He’s 29, they’re in the mid-to-late thirties.
DENVER POST: The Colorado Avalanche re-signing Matt Duchene this summer before the expiration of his current contract is yet another example of a change in how the club conducts its business with its players.
NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: NY Rangers captain Ryan Callahan admits rehabbing from off-season shoulder surgery could stretch into the start of this coming season.
CSNWASHINGTON.COM: Chuck Gormley explains “hardball” is the reason the Capitals haven’t yet re-signed RFA forward Marcus Johansson.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Capitals management can afford this stance. No offer sheets are coming for Johansson during a summer in which the salary cap has declined, plus he’s coming out of his entry-level contract and has no arbitration rights, which gives him almost no leverage. The Capitals are likely pushing for a “bridge” contract (two-three years long) and probably around $2 million per season.
NHL.COM: The Phoenix Coyotes intend to hold an open competition among their players to determine who plays on their top lines.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: The NY Rangers avoided arbitration with winger Mats Zuccarello, inking him to a one-year, $1.15 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Of the 21 players who filed for salary arbitration this summer, none of them wound up in front of an arbiter.
MEDVESCAK ZAGREB: announced the signing of former NHL defenseman Kurtis Foster.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Brent signed with the KHL’s Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod.
CSN CHICAGO: The Blackhawks are selling the ice they skated upon during their home games this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Well, it’s actually water now…
NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: A Seattle sports radio host shared a rumor claiming NHL commissioner Gary Bettman is pushing for expansion into that city for 2014-15.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Don’t expect Bettman or his staff to confirm that rumor, other than to say they’ve given Seattle serious consideration for future expansion but nothing’s on the table right now.
