NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – July 9, 2012.

Sharks hired Larry Robinson as assistant coach, Panthers president in Las Vegas at same time as Roberto Luongo, Predators CEO believes team will be fine, Nicklas Lidstrom to become a scout, and another attempt to build a new arena for the Islanders.

Sharks hire Robinson as assistant coach.

MERCURYNEWS.COM: The San Jose Sharks will today announce the hiring of former Devils coach Larry Robinson as an assistant coach.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A good hire by the Sharks, as Robinson should improve a Sharks defense which struggled last season.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Joe Yerdon found it an interesting coincidence Florida Panthers president Michael Yormark was recently in Las Vegas at the same time as Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some folks might read into this and accuse the Panthers of tampering, but unless there’s conclusive proof Yormark met with Luongo (without the Canucks permission), it’s not tampering, merely a coincidence they were in Vegas at the same time.

THE TENNESSEAN: Predators CEO Jeff Cogan believes his club will be fine despite losing defenseman Ryan Suter to free agency.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As the piece noted, unlike previous years when the Predators parted with talented players head for free agency, they actually put forth a serious effort to re-sign Suter. That’s why most Predators fans aren’t howling in protest at management over Suter’s departure. Cogan may well be right about his team’s status, but that could also depend on Shea Weber’s contract talks.

NHL.COM: Former Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom will remain with the organization in the role of scout, based in Europe.

NEWSDAY: Nassau County executive Edward Mangano is seeking a develop to construct a new arena, or renovate the current one, for the NY Islanders in hopes of keeping the club on Long Island.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I missed this report on Sunday but felt it worthwhile to include in today’s headlines. It remains to be seen if these efforts for a new or renovated arena for the Isles proves more fruitful than the previous ones. The Islanders lease agreement expires in 2015, and there’s talk they could relocate if there’s no agreement on a new arena by then.

  1. Too bad big bird wasn’t given the asst coach gig in Montreal. Hopefully he enjoys California. :)

    • That is all on Therien. He choose between JJ Daniault and Robinson and Might have been intimidated by Robinson so took Daniault. Think he missed the boat on this one and it not Bergenvin’s fault at all, as he would have had no problem with Robinson. Supposedly in the interview with HIO (Dave stubbs???) a flood on his polo horse farm kept him from meeting with Therrien….stupid storms… :)

  2. solid move by the sharks!!!. he is definitly a peice we needed.
    thumbs up DW

  3. Robinson is a great guy to have on your staff to help mold young defensemen. This is a bummer for Larson and a win for the Sharks. I think Burns will benefit.

I’m sure the opportunity to eventually be head coach if McLellan should falter is there if e wants it. Robinson has said in the past he isn’t fond of the pressures and stress of being head coach. Regardless McLellan will have a solid guy to lean on.

  4. I beg to differ Habsfan1, Who do you think hired Therien and has the last say in all things HABS. No one else beside the owners and currently Bergenvin whom I doubt will last very long in Montreal. As far as I can see so far there has been two bad decisions 1 – Crawford – 2 – Robinson, lets see what happens next?
