NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: The Rangers downed the New Jersey Devils 4-2 in a game which saw three fights at the opening puck drop.

Ovechkin stepping up for Capitals.

WASHINGTON POST: Alexander Ovechkin scored twice as the Capitals hung on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. Ovechkin has five goals in four games as he’s been stepping up his play of late. The battered Wings, meanwhile, received word center Darren Helm is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained left MCL suffered in Saturday’s loss to San Jose.

BUFFALO NEWS: The Sabres kept pace with the Capitals and kept their playoff hopes alive with a 7-3 beatdown of the Tampa Bay Lightning, whose best player, Steven Stamkos, appears to be playing hurt, given the recent dropoff in his faceoff percentage.

ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Jeff Deslauriers made 27 saves in a rare start with the Anaheim Ducks, while Bobby Ryan and new linemates Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri combined for two goals and six assists, handing the San Jose Sharks a costly 5-3 defeat.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: First place in the Pacific Division is on the line as the Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars face off tonight, in a game which should have a playoff feel.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford’s improved performance has been a factor in the club’s 7-1-1 streak.

CSNPHILLY.COM: The Flyers have lost defenseman Andrej Meszaros for six-eight weeks to surgery to repair a herniated disc.

MIAMI HERALD: The Florida Panthers have named forward Tomas Fleischmann, who has persevered over a blood condition, their nominee for the Masterton Trophy.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: The Carolina Hurricanes are unhappy Winnipeg Jets defenseman Zach Bogosian will not face supplemental discipline for a hit on Hurricanes forward Andreas Nodl, who as a result of that hit is currently sidelined with a concussion.

    The most frustrating part of the Sharks’ loss last night to the ducks, is the 2 players who hurt them the most, Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri, were originally Sharks’ draft picks. College players I think. Sucks because the Sharks got Huskins and Moen, neither of which are still with the team…

    nuganuge – Bonino was a Sharks prospect originally, but Palmieri was the Ducks first round pick in 09.

    Does San Jose have any depth in the farm system ? They seem to trade off a lot of #1′s, last June it was Charlie Coyle and SJ’s 2011 #1, for Burns ?
