LOS ANGELES TIMES: Jeff Carter scored in return to Philadelphia since he was traded three years ago as the LA Kings edged the Flyers 3-2.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Ryan McDonagh scored in overtime to lift the NY Rangers to a 4-3 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. It was a costly loss for the Coyotes, as goaltender Mike Smith was forced from the game in the third period with a leg injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Rangers win and the Flyers loss puts the former in fifth overall in the Eastern Conference, one point ahead of the latter. The Flyers hold two games in hand. With their win over the Flyers, the Kings move three points up on Minnesota for sixth overall in the Western Conference. The Coyotes did garner a point to move one point ahead of Dallas for the final playoff berth in the west. Smith’s injury could have serious consequences to the Coyotes playoff hopes.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford is expected to give up his position at the end of this season. He could remain as team president. It’s expected VP of hockey operations Ron Francis will take over as GM. Rutherford’s been with the Hurricanes since 1994.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This was inevitable. Though Rutherford built the Hurricanes into a Stanley Cup champion in 2006, they’ve only made the playoffs once since then, and are poised to miss this year’s postseason.

NBC SPORTS: The Hurricanes yesterday announced the re-signing of defenseman Justin Faulk to a six-year, $29 million contract extension. Faulk was eligible for RFA status this summer. His new deal breaks down as an average annual cap hit of $4.833 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ve also heard it comes with a no-trade clause that go into effect for 2017-18 the final two years of the deal. Regardless, it’s a good signing for the Hurricanes. Faulk’s been among the few bright spots in an otherwise miserable season for the Hurricanes, earning himself a selection to Team USA at the recent Sochi Olympics.

MLIVE.COM: Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist, NY Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and Boston Bruins winger Jarome Iginla are your NHL stars of the week.

DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov is in the hunt for this year’s Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goalie.

TRIBLIVE.COM: The Penguins are pleased with the performance of trade deadline acquisition Lee Stempniak on Sidney Crosby’s line.

WASHINGTON POST: The Capitals are seeking even strength goals from their top forwards.

THE BUFFALO NEWS: Sabres goalie coach Jim Corsi has had a busy month playing musical goalies.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If that name sounds familiar, he’s the originator of the Corsi rating, used to measure shots on goal plus shot attempts.
