PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW/PHILLY.COM: Sidney Crosby scored the game-tying goal midway through the third and Tyler Kennedy potted the winner in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins nipped the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1. It was the Penguins 12th straight win.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Newly-acquired winger Brenden Morrow did not join the Penguins for this game. He’ll be ready to suit up for their game on Tuesday against Montreal.

DETROIT FREE PRESS/ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Jimmy Howard made 33 saves back-stopping the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the undisciplined Anaheim Ducks. Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry and Teemu Selanne received spearing penalties late in the game, while Selanne also got ten minutes for a head butt(!).

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Ducks yesterday signed Radek Dvorak to a one-year contract, but must wait for him to clear waivers before he joins the team. Dvorak spent this season playing in Switzerland.

WASHINGTON POST/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Braden Holtby made 30 saves and Nicklas Backstrom netted the game-winner in a shootout as the Washington Capitals edged the NY Rangers 3-2.

TAMPA BAY TIMES /THE BUFFALO NEWS: Former Buffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff and AHL Syracuse coach Jon Cooper are the presumed front-runners for the vacant head coaching position of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who dismissed Guy Boucher yesterday.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Despite Ruff’s obvious experience, it’s believed Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is leaning toward Cooper. We could find out as soon as today.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk explains why he dealt former team captain Brenden Morrow to the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday. No word yet on who will take over from Morrow as captain.

NJ.COM: New Jersey Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk will miss two-four weeks to a shoulder injury.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The injury could push the Devils into the trade market for a replacement, but there’s not much available to adequately replace Kovalchuk, even in the short term.

NEW YORK POST: NY Rangers center Brad Richards’ struggles this season is one reason why his club is struggling to make the playoffs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Though only 32, Richards has really struggled during his tenure with the Rangers, generating speculation they could use their remaining compliance buyout this summer to shed the remaining seven years (at over $6.66 million per season) of his contract.

SAN JOSE MECURY NEWS: Is the clock ticking on the San Jose Sharks playoff hopes? Sure is starting to look that way.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: The Blackhawks will try Michael Frolik on their top line in hopes of jump-starting his offense.

  1. Shaun says:

If Yzerman replaces his coach this season I will lose what little respect I have left for his managerial ability. You don’t throw a new coach into a mess like TB in the hope of turning things around because rebuilding locker room culture is hard to do on the fly and battling for a playoff spot. The more likely result is your undermine the new coach who becomes associated with the team dysfunction of the current year. Just look at Montreal for an example of this. Keeping Boucher this long was a serious mistake. Don’t compound it by putting a new coach in a bad position. Interim is the way to go. And maybe Rangers’ management should take notice as they cling to 8th … the time to wake your players up to the seriousness of the situation is now. This is the organization that would do well to fire Tortorella and hire Ruff.

  2. BoltsNation says:

I would love to see Jon Cooper behind the Bolts bench. He has done an amazing job in our minor system, even with 7 of his top guys in Tampa he still leads the AHL.

  3. BCLeafFan says:

I still think Lindy Ruff to the Oilers would be a smart move…. and Jon Cooper has certainly earned a shot, as has Dallas Eakins.
