Steven Stamkos could miss 4-6 months to a broken tibia.

BOSTON HERALD/TAMPA TRIBUNE: Tuukka Rask made 28 saves as the Boston Bruins blanked the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-0, but the Bruins victory was overshadowed by Lightning star Steven Stamkos suffering a broken right tibia. Stamkos will undergo surgery today in Boston and is sidelined indefinitely. The Lightning also lost blueliners Sami Salo (lower body) and Keith Aulie (upper body) to injuries.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A potentially fatal blow for the Lightning, as Stamkos could be sidelined four-to-six months. While Team Canada management claims they’ll keep Stamkos on their roster, it’s doubtful he’ll be ready in time for the Sochi Olympics.

TSN.CA: Chris Chelios, Scott Niedermayer and Brendan Shanahan thanked their families and former teammates during their induction last night into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Former Flyers coach Fred Shero and Canadian women’s hockey pioneer Geraldine Heaney were also inducted into the Hall.

ESPN.COM: Scott Burnside compiles a list of those he believes are worthy of induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m still baffled why Rogie Vachon and Butch Goring haven’t been inducted. The Hall continues to be slow to induct European stars like Alexander Yakushev, Boris Mikhailov and Anders Hedberg.

PHILLY.COM: Having finally scored his first goal of the season, Flyers captain Claude Giroux hopes to get rolling during an upcoming road trip.

DETROIT NEWS: Johan Franzen has returned to the Red Wings lineup, while struggling Daniel Cleary could be scratched.

STLTODAY.COM: Blues defenseman Craig Jordan Leopold requires surgery to repair a tendon on his right index finger and could be sidelined up to two months.

TWINCITIES.COM: Minnesota Wild defenseman Keith Ballard is out indefinitely with an upper body injury unrelated to the concussion he suffered last month.

ANAHEIM DUCKS: yesterday announced the signing of center Dave Steckel to a one-year contract. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

  1. The Stamkos injury was just awful to watch. A definite blow to the Lightning and the League to lose such a dynamc and skilled player. This was just one of those freak accidents that occur and you hate to see it happen. I’ve read a lot of comments on another Canadian sports webiste where some people, clearly Bruins haters, were calling it a slew foot. Those folks obviously don’t know the definition of a slew foot becaue I couldn’t see anything like that on the replays I watched. In my opinion this looked like a play that occurs many times during any game everyday. One player on a hard net drive and a back checker skating hard with him and someone goes down and runs into the net. The net always wins in those situations. Get well soon, Stammer.

    • Couldn’t agree more. No foul on that play at all.

Stamkos is a classy player and I hope he is back on the ice soon. Shame to see him injured.

  2. We’re confusing Craig Leipold with Jordan Leopold…

  3. I know Tampa doesn’t have any cap room, but I wonder if the injury to Stamkos sends the Lightening looking for a replacement. I think Rolston just burnt a bridge with Moulson so I’m sure he is available for a player and some draft picks.
