NHL Morning Coffee Headlines – October 15, 2013.

The Wild down the Sabres, the Red Wings defeat the Bruins, plus the latest on Tomas Hertl, Rick Nash, Derek Roy, Tim Thomas, Tuomo Ruutu and more.

TWINCITIES.COM: Jason Pominville scored the game-winning goal in his return to Buffalo as the Minnesota Wild downed the Sabres 2-1. The Sabres dealt Pominville to the Wild at last season’s trade deadline. The win was the Wild’s third straight, while the Sabres remain winless this season.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: Jonas Gustavsson, filling in for an injured Jimmy Howard, made 28 saves to carry the Red Wings to a 3-2 win over the Boston Bruins. The game’s highlight was Pavel Datsyuk pouncing on a turnover, dancing around Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara and feeding a slick backhand pass to Henrik Zetterberg for the Wings opening goal.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Yet another example why the 35-year-old Datsyuk remains among the NHL’s very best players.

CSNBAYAREA.COM: San Jose Sharks rookie Tomas Hertl was name the NHL’s first star of the week.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Yeah, Hertl “disrespected” the NHL so bad last week, they had no choice but to make him their first star.

NEW YORK POST/NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: The Rangers have placed winger Rick Nash (concussion) on injured reserve, and placed goalie Martin Biron and winger Arron Asham on waivers in anticipation of calling up goalie Cam Talbot and winger JT Miller. This could spell the end of the line for the NHL careers of Biron and Asham if they pass unclaimed through waivers today. Biron didn’t rule out retirement.

STLTODAY.COM: Newcomer Derek Roy is off to a strong start with the Blues, tallying two goals and three assists in four games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: After bouncing from Buffalo to Dallas to Vancouver the past two seasons, Roy may have found a home in St. Louis. 

DENVER POST: An improve defensive system is partially responsible for the Colorado Avalanche’s strong start.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Avs have improved in that department so far, but they still have more work to do, as they’re currently giving up the fifth-most shots-against per game right now.

NJ.COM: New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello isn’t panicking over his club’s 0-3-3 start, maintaining his support of his players and coaching staff.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils speed and defensive play has been a serious concern early this season. These areas must improve if they’re to turn things around.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: The good news for the Carolina Hurricanes is winger Tuomo Ruutu has returned from injured reserve. The bad news is goalie Anton Khudobin (lower body injury) has been placed on injured reserve.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Tim Thomas is practicing again with the Florida Panthers and could return to action later this week, while center Nick Bjugstad could make his season debut tonight against the Nashville Predators.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Blue Jackets winger Matt Calvert will undergo surgery for a groin/abdominal injury and is out indefinitely.

  1. I still don’t understand the “disrespected” the game viewpoint. The object of the game is to put the puck in the net and that’s the means he used to do it.

    • Some felt that Hertl showboated on the 4th goal of the night – seems more and more rookies are celebrating a little more than what they used to back in the day and some take exception. Hertl is that good.
