CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Jonathan Toews (who scored the shootout winner on Friday against the Capitals) has little difficulty motivating himself to achieve bigger things.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Interesting bit of trivia: Toews has more Stanley Cup rings than Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin combined.

BOSTON GLOBE: Bruins star Patrice Bergeron will make his preseason debut today. Bergeron was still recovering from injuries suffered during the Stanley Cup Final.

NEWSDAY: NY Islanders winger Matt Moulson isn’t bothered by his contract status.  Moulson is eligible for UFA status next summer and negotiations with the Isles management have yet to begin.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Moulson tends to be an under-rated scorer because John Tavares is his linemate. Regardless, he’ll earn big buck in next summer’s UFA market, especially with the salary cap going up. That being said, don’t discount his re-signing with the Isles, who plucked him from obscurity and gave him a chance to shine.

STLTODAY.COM: Blues goaltender Jaroslav Halak is looking forward to the upcoming season and hopes to put his injury woes behind him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This will be a significant season for Halak. He’ll either solidify his role as the Blues starter, or it’ll be his final season in St. Louis. He’s eligible for UFA status next summer.

DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche rookie and 2013 first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon missed Friday’s game and is scratched from Saturday’s game due to a nagging hip flexor injury. Coach Patrick Roy downplayed the injury, but said the club didn’t want to take any chances. MacKinnon hopes to be ready for the club’s season-opener on October 2.

THE GLOBE & MAIL: Allan Maki examines what it takes to become captain of an NHL team.

SPORTSNET: One year after the start of the recent lockout, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is optimistic over the future of the league.
