ESPN.COM: The complete list of players placed yesterday on waivers as NHL teams must reach their 23-man roster limits by this afternoon. Among the 37 players placed on waivers are Toronto’s John-Michael Liles, Detroit’s Cory Emmerton, Los Angeles’ Jeff Schultz and Buffalo’s Alex Sulzer. If these players go unclaimed, they’ll be demoted to their respective clubs’ AHL farm teams.

TSN.CA: The Florida Panthers will sign UFA defenseman Ryan Whitney to a one-year, $900K contract. The Panthers signed forward Brad Boyes and defensemen Tom Gilbert during the weekend. Whitney was recently released from a PTO contract with the St. Louis Blues.

LOS ANGELES TIMES: The Kings have released goaltender Mathieu Garon.

DETROIT NEWS: The Red Wings could get salary cap compliant if Jonas Gustavsson or Patrick Eaves go on long-term injured reserve. If not,they could be forced to temporarily demote Gustav Nyquist, who is waiver-exempt this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Wings apparently aren’t planning any trades to get under the cap ceiling.

BND.COM: The St. Louis Blues have demoted forward Chris Porter.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: So much for speculation a more experienced player could be demoted or dealt.

TBO.COM: The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent their 2013 first round pick (third overall) Jonathan Drouin back to his junior team (Halifax Mooseheads).
