Blackhawks GM determined to keep Toews & Kane, Logan Couture weighs in on Nazem Kadri’s contract talks, Brad Marchand learns about the business of hockey, no word on Blue Jackets captaincy, and more.

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES:  Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman pledges Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane “will be here forever”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’ll be an expensive undertaking, which could cost upwards of $20 million to keep the duo in the fold (assuming they don’t sign “hometown discounts”), but with the salary cap anticipated to increase over the next two seasons – and beyond – it’s certainly achievable.

Logan Couture believes Nazem Kadri should accept short-term deal.

Logan Couture believes Nazem Kadri should accept short-term deal.

SPORTSNET.CA:  San Jose Sharks forward Logan Couture weighs in on Nazem Kadri’s stalled contract talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He believes Kadri should follow his example, sign a short-term ‘bridge contract’, after which Kadri could pursue a lucrative deal.   “Play and have a good two years like you know you can and then you’ll sign a nice deal after”, said Kadri. “You’ve just got to be confident that you’re going to have two good years.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The deck is stacked against Kadri. His 44 points in 48 games came during a lockout-shortened season, and his production tailed off significantly over the final 19 games (including the playoffs). He’s also coming out of an entry-level contract with no arbitration rights, where his only leverage is a holdout. Unless the Leafs suffer a rash of serious injuries to their other centers during preseason, Kadri has little choice but to ink a two-year deal.

CSNNE.COM: Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand learned a hard lesson about the business of hockey after his friend Tyler Seguin was dealt this summer to the Dallas Stars.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: No word yet if the Blue Jackets will have a captain this season. The captaincy has been vacant since Rick Nash was dealt to the NY Rangers in July 2012.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: Hockey Canada to unveil its Olympic jersey on October 8th, though it appears a photo of the jersey (modeled by a seemingly unimpressed Jonathan Toews) may have been leaked.

DETROIT FREE PRESS: The one-time financial manager of former NHL star Sergei Fedorov has been indicted in a $20 million investment fraud probe.

Toews has the same look Ralphie did in a Christmas Story when his parents made him put on the pink bunny suit.
