Recaps of Saturday’s games involving American NHL teams, plus the latest on Marian Hossa, Jamie Benn, and Brad Richards.
ARIZONA REPUBLIC/ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Mike Smith allowed four goals in regulation but was perfect in overtime and the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Anaheim Ducks 5-4. Lauri Korpikoski scored twice for the Coyotes, while Andrew Cogliano potted a hat trick for the Ducks.
BOSTON GLOBE/TAMPA BAY TIMES: Brad Marchand’s power-play goal late in the third snapped a 2-2 time to lift the Boston Bruins to a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
BUFFALO NEWS/NORTHJERSEY.COM: Jason Pominville scored twice as the Buffalo Sabres’ extended their winning streak to three games, nipping the slumping New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM/MIAMI HERALD: Jiri Tlusty scored his tenth of the season and Alexander Semin collected three assists as the Carolina Hurricanes crushed the Florida Panthers 6-2. It was a tough loss for the Panthers, with Jose Theodore, Dmitry Kulikov and Scottie Upshall all sidelined by injuries during the game.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS/THE TENNESSEAN: The San Jose Sharks took an early lead on goals by Dan Boyle and Joe Pavelski, then held on to edge the Nashville Predators 2-1.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa will play his 1,000th NHL game when his club faces off today against the Detroit Red Wings.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Brad Richards is seeing an improvement in his play skating with Rick Nash and Carl Hagelin.
DALLAS MORNING NEWS: The NHL has fined Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn $10,000 for a cross-check on Ryan Jones of the Edmonton Oilers during a game last Thursday.

I am sorry, this is one of the worst calls I’ve seen in the history of disciplinary action.
1. The team was losing 5-1
2. Jones was perceived as just bumping the goalie a bit (barely at all)
3. Benn comes off the bench, skates directly at a player with his back turned and levels him with a cross check
Everyone is always talking about intent and you never know ^^^^ there you KNOW. How this isn’t a suspension and a pocket change fine is baffling to me. Shanny should be fired or the Oilers should appeal this or something, this was a disgusting hockey play. Heck, even Stars fans are scratching their head on how he didn’t get a one or two game for this.
