The latest on Ryan O’Reilly, Sergei Bobrovsky, Ryan McDonagh, Steve Montador, Henrik Tallinder, plus updates on the Wild, Blues, Hurricanes, Penguins & more.
DENVER POST: Newly-resigned Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly is playing with an extra air of confidence which was lacking in previous seasons.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A new two-year, $10 million contract can do that.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Blue Jackets goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was named the NHL’s player of the week for his performance last week.
PHILLY.COM: Trading away Bobrovsky last summer to the Blue Jackets may be coming back to haunt the Philadelphia Flyers.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ilya Bryzgalov’s expensive, lengthy contract ensured Bobrovsky was on his way out of Philadelphia last year. Still, it’s a move they could come to regret, especially if they end up using a compliance (amnesty) buyout to dump the remainder of Bryzgalov’s contract either this summer or next.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Don’t look now, but the Minnesota Wild are climbing in the standings, currently perched atop the Northwest Division.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: After a slow start, the Wild have begun to find a winning groove. That could change them from sellers to buyers as the trade deadline nears.
BND.COM: St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armtrong’s decision to recall Jake Allen reflects his impatience with his struggling goalie tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A number of NHL goalies are struggling this season, likely because many of them saw little or no playing time elsewhere during the NHL lockout. That could be one reason behind the struggles of Halak and Elliott this season.
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: The Penguins are struggling on the penalty kill this season.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: With Marc Staal sidelined and Dan Girardi hampered by injuries, Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh is stepping up his play.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: A knee injury to Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward has pushed backup Dan Ellis and callup Justin Peters into the spotlight.
NJ.COM: Devils defenseman Henrik Tallinder is suffering a lower body injury, but it’s not another blood clot like the one which sidelined him last season.
SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Shanwn Matthias’ performance this season has been among the few bright spots for the struggling Florida Panthers.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: The Blackhawks have placed defenseman Steve Montador on waivers.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL: 106 NHL players are currently sidelined by injuries this season, likely due to the speed of the game and a lack of respect among players.
NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALKS: The players escrow payments will jump from 10 to 20 percent on Friday.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As James Mirtle pointed out, the “make whole” provision and playoff revenue will help the players recover most of that clawed-back money.
