Recaps of Tuesday’s games featuring American NHL teams, plus the latest on Sidney Crosby, Niklas Kronwall, Ryane Clowe, Jonathan Bernier and more.
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE/WASHINGTON POST: Sidney Crosby had two assists and Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves as the Pittsburgh Penguins won their tenth straight game with a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.
LOS ANGELES TIMES/ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Jonathan Bernier made 40 saves as the Los Angeles Kings edged the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 to sweep their home-and-home series. Shane Doan scored twice in a losing cause.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Don’t look now, kids, but the Blue Jackets have moved into a three-way tie for eighth overall in the Western Conference, and are unbeaten in regulation (7-0-3) in their last ten games. The Predators, on the other hand, have fallen to 13th, have lost four straight, and have won only three games in their last ten.
NEW YORK DAILY NEWS/NJ.COM: Rick Nash’s second period goal held up as the game winner as the New York Rangers edged the New Jersey Devils 3-2. The Devils also lost forward Alexei Ponikarovsky to an unspecified injury during the game.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: With the Rangers win, there’s now a four-way tie between sixth and ninth overall in the East between Carolina, Toronto, the Rangers and Devils.
SUN-SENTINEL.COM/NEWSOBSERVER.COM: The Florida Panthers broke open a scoreless tie with four third period goals on route to a 4-1 win over the now-slumping Carolina Hurricanes , who’ve lost four straight games.
CSNCHICAGO.COM: The Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks, the two best teams in the Western Conference, will clash tonight in Anaheim.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A possible preview of this year’s Western Conference Final? Time will tell. Hopefully, this will be the best game of the night.
DETROIT NEWS: Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall is stepping up as a team leader, evaluator and motivator.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: Sharks forward Ryane Clowe, currently sidelined by a shoulder injury, has struggled to score this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Are Clowe’s scoring woes tied to this lockout-shortened season? Is he nursing more than just a shoulder injury? Is his physical style of play taking a toll upon his offensive game? Whatever the reason, Clowe hasn’t exactly bolstered his value in his contract year with his performance.
STLTODAY.COM: T.J Oshie’s imminent return to the Blues roster could force them to move a player to make room for him.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: My expectation is they’ll demote a player rather than trade one. It certainly won’t be goalie Jake Allen, whose strong performance has pretty much made him the de facto starter. They could try to demote Brian Elliott, but given how much he’s making, another player will likely hit the waiver wire. The Post-Dispatch suggests either Chris Porter or Matt D’Agostini could be vulnerable.
