The latest on Brad Richards, Mike Smith and Sergei Bobrovsky, plus updates on the Red Wings, Capitals, Wild and Avalanche.

Brad Richards still in limbo over possible buyout.

Brad Richards still in limbo over possible buyout.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the New York Rangers have yet to inform center Brad Richards if he’ll be a compliance buyout. GM Glen Sather told the Post he’s made his decision but declined to reveal it as he prefers to keep his options open. The buyout period begins 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final (late Wednesday) and ends at 5 pm ET on July 4.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like Richards could be kept waiting for just over another week before getting word from Sather if he’s staying or going.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: cited a report from Russia in which KHL president Alexander Medvedev trumpeted the excellent offer SKA St. Petersburg made to Columbus Blue Jackets RFA goalie and Vezina winner Sergei Bobrovsky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bobrovsky could make a lot of money on a short-term offer from the KHL, but he will have more financial security by signing with the Blue Jackets. The expectation is the Bobrovsky camp is merely using the KHL as leverage to get a better deal from the Blue Jackets. Time will tell.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Sarah McLellan reports the Phoenix Coyotes re-signing of head coach Dave Tippett has had a positive effect upon the Coyotes negotiations with pending UFA goalie Mike Smith. Management and Tippett met with Smith and his agent in Vancouver last week to discuss contract term and salary numbers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’s a positive sign, but the club’s future in Glendale could be the determining factor.

DETROIT FREE PRESS/MLIVE.COM: Helene St. James reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland will explore ” a trade or two. Maybe a two-for-one deal, maybe a three-for-one, or three-for-two.” He’s also held contract talks with pending UFAs Valtteri Filppula, Daniel Cleary and Damien Brunner. Ansar Khan, meanwhile, reports Holland will try to alleviate his logjam at forward with trades before turning to compliance buyouts. Khan cites a source claiming winger Jordin Tootoo is available, as well as fourth liner Cory Emmerton. He also suggests Filppula’s rights could be shopped.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like Holland intends to be quite busy over the next seven-ten days. I could see him shopping Filppula’s rights, and wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Tootoo. He needs to free up some cap space to retain a number of their key players, and I believe Holland would prefer re-signing Cleary and Brunner.

NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK/CSNWASHINGTON.COM: Mike Halford cites reports out of Washington noting Capitals GM George McPhee intends to match any offer sheet for Karl Alzner or Marcus Johansson, and he has no intention of trading goalie Michal Neuvirth. Chuck Gormley, meanwhile, wonders if the Capitals buy out Jeff Schultz if they’re unable to trade him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Capitals have limited cap space and must re-sign Alzner and Johansson, plus they must re-sign or replace pending UFAs Mike Ribeiro and Matt Hendricks. A compliance buyout of Schultz may be necessary if a trade partner cannot be found.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports the Minnesota Wild’s re-signing of Niklas Backstrom to a reduced salary gives the Wild some additional cap space, but GM Chuck Fletcher cannot retain everyone, and could either trade Tom Gilbert ($4 million for next season) or buy him out, plus its’ believed Justin Falk and Zenon Konopka are available. Cal Clutterbuck is an RFA and could accept a cap friendly one year contract, but he has trade value, as it’s believed the Edmonton Oilers have interest in him.

DENVER POST’s Adrian Dater reports the following via Sulia: “Speculation heating up that Florida really wants (Nathan) MacKinnon. But Avs own the first pick. So they’d need to give up something off roster to make Avs do a swap to No. 2. The Avs I’m hearing want Erik Gudbranson, a young D. That probably is asking too much, but I hear that’s the price for now.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I doubt the Avs are willing to part with the first overall and the chance to draft MacKinnon for Gudbranson and the second overall.

  1. Tallon isn’t giving away Gudbranson to move up one spot …

    • No he better not, as good as mckinnon is I would take drouin, or jones with Gudbranson any day

      • Why would you trade Gudbransson to move up and pick MacKinnon. You could just draft Barkov and keep your defenseman. The chance that MacKinnon becomes Crosby is as great as the chance that Barkov becomes Malkin. That makes more sense. Sometimes too much is too much.

        • X2 (Exactly)

    • Of course not. Gudbranson is a Tallon guy his first pick for Panthers as GM. If MacKinnon is taken Panthers take either Drouin or Barkov. I don’t think Panthers take Jones either.

  2. I really hope nonis looks at filppula. I know i have been advocating for this but, out of the 4 names right now ( bozak, weiss, roy, filppula) I rather have him over the other 3. he been in the shadow of datsyuk and I am sure has learned a lot from him. also a other center i have interest in is boyd gordon having him and mclement out on pk would be great.

Richards- to me richards was gone via (buyout) but with torts firing and new coach, i think he will be givin 1 more year just like Grabo should with T.O.

going to be an exciting 2 weeks, lets see what nonis can do as a gm.. GO Leafs GO

Oh and by the way to all bruins fans Karma is a isn’t it .GO Leafs GOOOOO

    • If Holland trades Filppulas right to Toronto expect to pay 8 years @ $44m or a $5.5m cap hit that’s basically the only way teams are going to land him and that’s gross overpayment for a career 40 point per season player.

      • hes looking for 8 years at 5.5?? maybe thats why i have heard nothing about him coming to toronto. i could see around 4.5-5 for 3 years but at 8 years way to risky.

    • Here’s a crazy idea!
Forget Weis, Roy and Filpullla, they will all ask for too much.
Toronto lets Bozak & MacArthur walk if (when) they ask too much as well and the Leafs fill in the rest with who they have at C.
namely Kadri, Grabo, McClement, and Colborne

      Crazy huh? LOL

      • theres something called depth that you need… when even one of those guys gets injured whos coming in?\

        crazy huh? LOL

      • That center line up is frighteningly bad…lol if that was our only other option (thank the hockey gods its not) you have to resign Bozak

        • 2 centers with barely a year in the league between them that don’t win draws another midget who had a horrible year and McClement…eek well atleast we would be in the running for McDavid…lol

      • I wouldn’t mind doing that and letting Grabo and Kadri (and maybe JVR… if he can convert he is big lol, and plays a 2 way game) compete for the top 2 line centre roles. Neither of them are a 3rd line centres. Honestly the big topline centre the Leafs are looking for doesn’t exist and if he does is not available and they need to be drafted and/or developed generally.

Perusing through capgeek players who may be able to fill #1 Centre type roles currently or eventually:

Getzlaf, Seguin, Krejci, Bergeron, Hodgson, Grigorenko, Baerchi, E Staal, J Staal, Toews, Sharp, Duchene, O’Reilly, Statsny, Benn, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Nugent-Hopkins, Huberdeau, Kopitar, Richards, Carter, M Koivu, Coyle, Granlund, Plekanec, Galchenyuk, C Wilson, Zajac, Tavares, Strome, B Richards, Stepan, Spezza, Turris, Giroux, B Schenn, Couturier, J Thornton, Pavelski, Couture, Oshie, Backes, Berglund, Lecavalier, Stamkos, H Sedin, Kesler, Backstrom.

Chances are the Leafs are not looking to develop. The teams to look at that have excess (I believe 3 quality top line centres) that can contribute immediately include:
        Boston 3(Seguin, Krejci, Bergeron),
Colorado, 4(Duchene, O’Reilly, Statsny, maybe MacKinnon)
        LA 3(Kopitar, Richards, Carter),
        San Jose 3(Thornton, Pavelski, Couture),
        St Louis (Oshie, Backes, Berglund)

Among the list, Boston won’t trade with us (though I would love Bergeron).
Colorado would think about moving Statsny or O’Reilly assuming they aren’t converted to wingers with MacKinnon being drafted.
LA might think about trading Richards or Carter.
San Jose might think about trading Thornton or Pavelski
St Louis is in a bit of cap crunch so you need to think they will listen to all deals.

Any deal will be costly to the Leafs.

        • Brandon said:

          “Boston 3(Seguin, Krejci, Bergeron),
Colorado, 4(Duchene, O’Reilly, Statsny, maybe MacKinnon)
          LA 3(Kopitar, Richards, Carter),
          San Jose 3(Thornton, Pavelski, Couture),
          St Louis (Oshie, Backes, Berglund)”

With Colorado’s Centermen’s, they need to lose Stastny, as O’Rielly cannot be traded until after Feb 28th, 2014. I can’t see them waiting that long, especially if they’re bringing in (drafting) MacKinnon. Why not:

          To Toronto: Stastny
          To Colorado: Phaneuf

Toronto gets their 1C, Colorado sheds some salary and gets a big dman that can carry a lot of ice-time, get you some points and is physical. Not to mention, Phaneuf will likely accept a small paycut when he goes to re-sign next year. That will work out with Colorado having to re-sign Duchene, Landeskog, Downie, McGinn, Varlamov, Olver, O’Rielly and Mitchell. Maybe re-sign Phaneuf for 5 years, $27.5M ($5.5M). That would be a $1M less that what he is making now, and put that extra $1M towards the re-signing of one of Colorado’s key players (Duchene, Landeskog). Maybe once O’Rielly’s contract is up after Feb. 28th, 2014, they could trade him for more key pieces and shed some more salary (Huberdeau, Simmonds, Coburn, Zibanejad, etc.)

          • Colorado doesn’t want Phaneuf. Period! Quit listening to Dater’s crazy, off-the-cuff trade ideas. Colorado wants quality, skilled, character players. That is Colorado’s organizational blueprint. With a heavy emphasis on character. Phaneuf doesn’t even come close to what the Avs want, or need really.

Plus, the Avs really like Stastny. He is an excellent player for us and our all around best player. His intangibles alone eclipse what Phaneuf has to offer us. The Avs were whispered to maybe be thinking a Stastny for Yandle centered deal last year. This is more like what we are looking for. See the difference in quality and character here. Oh yeah, leaf fans.
Nobody wants your garbage. Your own admitted garbage. If you don’t him, ain’t nobody want him. The players you need to be trading to bring back value, you haven’t quite soured on just yet. Like Gardiner, Khadri, and maybe JVR. And not to the Avs. Were covered. Were good. Thanks for stopping by.

    • “Oh and by the way to all bruins fans Karma is a isn’t it”.

Is a what?? You forgot the word “bitch”. Your sentence is incomplete like the Leafs.

  3. Don’t count Winnipeg out. Byfuglien, Burmistrov and Jets first round pick to Colorado for the first over-all pick.

    • I can’t see col making that trade. Maybe move up to few spots with Burmistrov. Maybe Dal or NJ but would probably need a more going that way (another draft pick).

    • Hell no!

  4. Things are going to heat up fast with the draft on Sunday and UFA season starting 5 days later combined with compliance buyouts sandwiched in between from roughly 11pm tomorrow night (48hrs after the final game) until Sunday at 5pm (draft day). Exciting times for fans interested in the business side of hockey.

    • jw is it gonna be like this every year or is it just for this year like ufa starts usually on the 1st right? and draft usually takes a whole weekend right?

      • Yes, but the Draft is only aired during the 1st round. 2-7 rounds are unaired.

  5. Gudbranson is not even the best young d on the team. Kulikov is better offensively, plays more minutes and has a better plus minus. Gudbranson is a big stay at home defenseman. I’m not saying Gudbranson is a horrible player.
If Gudbranson is rated higher by florida and wont part with him then go for Kulikov and maybe Colorado could snag another piece like Bjugstad, Petrovic, or Matheson. Maybe even Markstrom, if Roy likes him and how bad Florida wants McKinnon.

  6. I respectfully disagree with Spector. If I were the Avs I would take Gudbranson and the 2nd overall for the 1st overall in a heartbeat.
Mackinnon is good, but Colorado is overloaded at centre and they need D-men. Gudbranson would help the D-man situation and Col can still draft a forward @ 2nd overall.

    • I don’t think Florida would offer that deal

      • Colorado would get a highly thought of young shutdown D-man and Jones or a forward. Solve 2 holes instead of 1, Colorado is loaded with young good forwards honestly.

      • Florida wants MacKinnon pretty badly. I wouldn’t count out that rumoured trade.

  7. TB, Nashville and Carolina picks could become very attractive with all the rumors of the top 2 picks and who they will pick. Did think Jones would drop to 3 and ever out of the top 3.

  8. RE: williejones: Good, take flippula. The guy has no confidence when he has the puck. A major disappointment in detroit and i think he has to work more on his mental game then his skills cause he sure has the hands and feet.

  9. Gudbranson is much better than Kulikov. Gudbranson is still young and was injured in the last offseason and had to work through rehabilitation last season. Kulikov has more offensively but has some defensive liability. I could see Panthers trading Kulikov but not to move up in the draft. They would want a young offensive forward like one of the Oilers young guns. Certainly not going to give him away. Bjugstad, Petrovic, Matheson and Markstrom will not be traded. Petrovic is a beast. Markstrom had a few rough starts early last season but proved he could handle the job. Markstrom is a keeper.

    • So in other words for flo to move up to the top pick like the article suggest they will trade no valuable players. Sounds like a hell of a deal for col. That’s ridiculous.
Gudbranson has played two years. He was a beast in junior but he’s not the guy you build your D around. He will never be a #1 deman, he will be the top stay at home de on a team (which all teams need). In 104 NHL games he has 2 goals and 12 points. He’s not going to be Seabrook, closer to Orpik. Hopefully not Bryan Allen.
Kulikov is only 1 year older. He’s not going to be a #1 d either but he will give you 25-30 points in full season.
Neither are going to be super stars.

      • It is not worth Florida trading a top defensemen to move up in draft. They can take Drouin or Barkov if they want a forward. Tallon is not stupid. Let Roy and Sakic talk it up. Panthers get a great player in the number two spot no need to trade up. The article is nothing more than rumor mongering. They are rumors and nothing more. This whole site is rumors, it is fun to think about the various possible trades but the fact is Florida is not going to give much so it won’t happen.

        • I agree with you that Florida should just sit at the 2 spot but if they really wanted McKinnon they would have to give some valuable asset(s) up.

  10. People realize draft picks don’t always pan out right lol

    • You mean like alexander Daigle.

      • or stefan

  11. i say Pens get rid of Cooke and trade for Tootoo. that would be great for the Pens!

    • Tootoo would look good in Pitt but he has a cap hit of 1.9m (sal 2.0m) for 2 more years. I was actually wondering if he would be bought out because det only used him in 1 playoff game.
I wouldn’t mind him in Vancouver if he was bought out.

      • Tootoo only makes $1.9mil It would be kind of foolish to buy him out with such a low cap hit he has value right where he is. I would say he could be had for a 5th round pick unless Ken Holland wants to package him with other pirces for some kind of upgrade.

  12. Clutterbuck would look good in a Habs jersey. No great player, but a solid banger who can put the puck in the net and probably wouldn’t come at too high a cost.

    • i think everyone probably wants clutterbuck… hes an awesome guy to have on the 3rd line

    • those type of players will come at a higher cost than many think. they are high in demand.

      • Agreed. Mostly just wishful thinking (and the knowledge that the Habs are in desperate need of a big body, and so might slightly overpay for one. But I’m sure Bergeron won’t go overboard, either.)

  13. Where’s Shticky with his offers lol

    next one will be

    To Toronto
    Gudbranson
    2nd overall

    To Florida
    Phaneuf
    TO’s 1st rounder

    • Listen I said I’d leave ya alone cause you obviously have no idea what your talking about, but let’s recap…so far you didn’t know guys on IR can’t be bought out, you think Horcoff contract is I quote not bad, you thought Miller and Vanek were getting 4 of someone top 6 and countless other stupid comments just shut up you look stupid… Phanuef a first round pick and another asset for a player (horcoff) to be bought out saving the Oil some money next year to sign some of those guys who will get big deals and the 7 isn’t a horribly stupid deal,Hocoffs contract is horrible beyond not too bad it’s horrible now maybe the Oil will bye him out themselves, I get that but if they did it this way they get a solid minute eating top 15 in the league type D to play with Shultz still get a first round pick another player to give them dome depth which are things they are lacking plus gets rid of a really bad contract, now until you have some sort of clue what you are talking about I’m done dealing with you and you’re stupidity.

      • stupidity? lol buddy look in the mirrior. hell even your mom thinks your stupid the only one who doesn’t is you and that’s basically because your what? Yes!!! Stupid!!!!!!!!!

You and your moronic ideas are causing headaches worldwide. And if you actually read my posts…..

        To Nashville
        Vanek
        Stafford
        16th Overall
        2nd rounder

        To Buffalo
        4th Overall
        Blum or Ellis

        THEN Sabres flip the 4th

        To Avs
        Miller
        4th Overall
        Sekera
        And a defenseman prospect

        To Sabres
        1st Overall

That’s basically one trade that the Sabres land the 1st pick. In which they give up Stafford, Vanek, Miller, Sekera, 16th overall, 4th overall, 2nd rounder and a defenseman prospect for the first overall. You have the Laughs jumping from what 22 or something into the top 7 for Phaneuf and a pick.. That guy is stupidity at it’s worst.

Like I said if you can read I’ll caps lock the rest for ya…..

        - YES HORCOFF’S CONTRACT IS BAD BUT IT HAS $7 MILLION LEFT ON IT FOR TWO YEARS.
        - THEY CAN EASILY BUY HIM OUT NEXT YEAR WHEN THERES ONLY $3 MILLION LEFT ON IT.

        - WHY GIVE UP A TO 7 PICK TO FALL THAT FAR BACK FOR A GUY WHO COMMITS CONSTANT TURNOVERS AND MISTAKES GAME IN GAME OUT (AND THESE ARE BAD MISTAKES, NOT JUST YOUR EVERY DAY MISTAKES)?

        - NURSE OR RISTOLAINEN COULD EASILY BE BETTER OR AS GOOD AS PHANEUF IN THERE 1ST OR 2ND YEARS.

        - MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE FOR OILERS TO DO YOUR TRADE

        AGAIN DO YOUR HOMEWORK GUY!!!

        • Why wouldnt Nashville try to package the 4th overall and Blum or Ellis plus more to the Avs for the 1st? Why would they want Vanek who is UFA in a year Stafford who is aggravation at its finest and a pick a dozen picks lower then they have plus a second rounder?? Seems like Nashville has a more pressing need for a star center and could cut Buffalo out of this all together.

Lets also keep in mind every off season the team with the number 1 pick gets a huge amount of coverage, they are bringing in a new era in Colorado with Sakic and Roy there and IMO there is nothing that is going to stop them from being the first team on that stage Sunday selecting someone they will have fair to high expectations for. There is no one and I mean no one who is going to come from this draft and get 100 points next season Not one Crosby not one Ovi.

        • Me loves a good cat fight and I am not here to take sides but I cannot let this one pass.

“NURSE OR RISTOLAINEN COULD EASILY BE BETTER OR AS GOOD AS PHANEUF IN THERE 1ST OR 2ND YEARS”

          Um, no.

        • Buffalo is like To in that you don’t have anything that belongs on the Avs/ We don’t need miller and don’t want him. we have a blossoming stable of young goalies. To put it simply, Colorado will not be adding any past their prime, problematic, hand-me downs. Even with the 4th Buffalo doesn’t have what it takes. We aren’t looking for patches, band-aids, or close-enough. We want strong young pieces with talent and character players. No kinda-fits or these-will-dos. The Avs aren’t just looking for just good players or were good players or could be good players. We aren’t looking to re-tool or re-shape or patch. The Avs are patiently looking for specific pieces to the team to grow with the young roster. And they aren’t looking to subtract or get rid if anyone or looking to acquire a lot of new pieces. It is fine tuning time in Colorado. Hope we can add Bickell through free agency. That is the type of player that Colorado wants.

        • You tell’em man. Go nuts on him! You go girl?!!

      • Horcoff contract but its in Edmonton’s best interest to buy him out and pick a d (nurse probably). If Toronto really doesn’t want Phanuef than try to trade him to col for Stastny (straight up), unless they can find someone else to trade with. One of Col centers has to be on the move if they are picking McKinnon. Or hang on to Phanuef to the trade deal line and see if you can get a 1st for him.

        • now that deal makes a whole lot more sense… and its not tilted so far to one side.

          takes notes shticky….

          • You guys should keep records of how many trades you have gotten correct. Its not just Toronto fans its all fans in general, as much as you would love it big deals dont go down as often as people would like to believe maybe 1-2 a year. And for the record sure shticky has had some insane trade scenarios but that flip flopping buffalo trade is laughable when was the last time something like that happened in the NHL??

          • happens more than you think actually. just last year sabres traded nashville’s pick to calgary for there pick.

          • but i agree with you dino that its highly unlikley and on the shticky trade thing he’s got the worst trade ideas ever lol

        • Lol I said that, I could see them doing that but this could be another option jeesh then the classy kid there started raging me out and bringing my mom (who died. Rather tragically I may add) in to it sooo I’ll just leave it at that., and let him continue to speak for himself with more genius comments like ” is it gonna be like this all year, UFA starts July 1st right? the draft takes a whole weekend right?…” and other such great insight.

          • And for the record go back a ways to when the Bernier idea came up and see what ya thought when I said Scrivens Fratin and a second gets it done….can’t really go back to last summer but Flyers fans ripped on me for saying that Shenn by himself for JVR but I digress…lol do I get some wrong of course I do we all do bit come on really compared to most I’m not that bad. We are all alittle bit biased when it comes to our teams but there is no need for bringing people’s family in to it.

          • shit shticky sorry about your mom guy; i had no idea. condolences.

how isn’t that a fair question about the draft and ufa period though? you seriously gotta read into peoples post before you yourself start ragging like you are right now. the draft on normal years would take a whole weekend but this year it’s supposed to be done in one day? and all years before july 1st used to be the start of ufa period this year it’s the 4th. so wondering if this trend is gonna continue into the future how is that a stupid question?

makes you look even more stupid to critisize those questions than the phaneuf deal you proposed.

            again sorry about your mother….

          • yes shticky we are a lil biased and yes you def called the bernier deal

          • To your other comment (Shticky) on you getting the Berier trade right…please provide a link, I would like to see that!

          • @ leafs advocate

            Shticky says:

            June 20, 2013 at 1:48 pm

Look at the shots Rimer is facing…how many are quality scoring chances? Teams shoot pretty. Much as they cross the red line on Rimer because of his poor handling of the puck and many of the shots Rimer faces are almost meant as a pass because of his rebound control issues and the fact he can’t catch a puck. I like Rimer but let’s not read to much into a 1 percent difference in save percentage Bernier has played behind an MVP type goalie and this year looked very good for a pretty long stretch while Quick found his game, would I pay a first round pick to get Bernier no but if it’s for spare parts (again assuming the will upgrade on wing) Frattin Scrivens and/or a second done deal you can never have enough good goaltending especially. In an 84 game season

      • Go at him Shitcky! It takes two to tango. The drama alone is worth it!!!

  14. I’m really shocked there isn’t more talk about Toronto trying to pick up Riberio. I know everyone wants to go younger, but Riberio is an excellent center and could play well with Lupul & Kessel.

I think the only top 6 pick that has a shot at going is the Hurricanes, outside of that I don’t see any of them going. I think the Oilers are going to pair their pick with Yakupov and make a shocking move that most people don’t see coming, something that lands them Yandle (PHO) or Buff (WPG).

However I think the team to watch at this draft is going to be the Jackets, they were so close to making the playoffs and providing they get Bobs locked up they have some fuel with 3 1st round picks that they could use and this team wants to get into the playoffs. They are going to have a full season of Gaborik as well as Ryan Murray and a good chance of Boone Jenner joining them with cap space to spare. I think they package the 14th & 27th overall for a decent roster player or maybe just move the 14th or 19th alone to get a player that can play this coming season.

    • Yak and the 7th for Yandle or Byfuglien?

That’s insane overpayment. Yakupov paired with a 2nd rounder could easily get you one of those 2.

      • Hell Yaks could bring back more than just Buff probably Burmistrov also. But Ed would be crazy to make that trade still. I really think Yaks will be a top line player.

    • I love the idea of the supreme passing Ribeiro playing with those 2 on a 1 or 2 yr contract, but there is something about him that terrifies me longterm.

      • Sorry, I didn’t mean to imply straight up I meant around the starting points of deals, likely something along the lines of Yak + 7th for Yandle/Buff + Boedker/Burmistrov + Pick.

I personally like Yakupov + 7th for Byfuglien, Burmistrov, 13th Overall as I feel it meets both teams needs. The ‘Peg has Enstrom, Bosagian, and Trouba so they can afford to move Buff, and Burmistrov is top 6 potential but just unhappy and wants a change of scenery. So Edmonton ends up getting their big two way defenseman, a replacement winger with upside, and still pick in the top 15. The Jets get an offensive boost on wing and try and grab Lindholm or Monahan with the 7th overall.

  15. Bye bye Bryz.

Just announced he will be bought out.

    • YUPPERS….

Wondering if they are gonna stick with Mason?

Or make a pitch for Luongo or someone?

      • Yes!!! Now Luo for Hartnell. If Phil wants to send some salary to Van or Luo for a 7th round pick.

      • I don’t see anybody making a trade for Luongo especially the Flyers, they just got rid of a bad goalie contract, why trade for another?

I do believe that Van will end up realizing they waited too long to pull the trigger and Luongo’s value has dropped big time. They will buy him out and Luongo might sign wih the flyers but I highly doubt he is going to want to play in another market that will disect every play and game. I can see him signing with FLA or another team that isn’t a huge hockey market.

        • I agree gillis waited way to long. I hope they can get something in return even a 7th rounder but I don’t think it will happen now. In a perfect world they would keep Luo and trade Schneider for some talent or picks.

    • God knows what the Flyers will do now. Hey at least their GM has balls and doesn’t mind using their cash flow to make the team better. Can’t say the same for MLSE who look like they will use that super important compliance provision to buyout Komi and his $3.75M one year deal. Absolutely pathetic considering the hundreds of millions they take in every year.

      • That’s mainly cause komi and grabo are the only real bad contracts on the team, some could debate liles is too, but his stats and possession numbers arent that bad, just seems like carlyle hates him IMO, pretty sure philly will end up with either miller or luongo, with all their goaltending issues for sooooooooooooooooooooooo many years, have a feeling phillys finally just gonna grab a for sure elite goalie, and will definitely over pay for him too

      • Am, make the team better? How so? Do tell me that getting rid of Richards and Carter to make room for Bryz was better! Cause Richards and Carter made LA better, and now both have Cup rings. Tell me how JvR for Schenn was better! Or how trading Bobrovsky for crappy picks made them better (Bobrovsky this years Vezina Trophy winner). Or how is losing Briere because of these horrible cap signing and forcing him to be bought out…better!

        • I was talking strictly cash flow dude. No doubt Philly’s GM has made a ton of bone head moves.
I should have said Philly’s ownership has the balls to use buyouts to better their team as opposed to MLSE. My point being MLSE is a cash cow that can afford to take some teams horrendous contract off their hands in exchange for something big for example take LeCavalier’s $45M contract from Tampa, buy him out for $30M in exchange Tampa gives TO their first round pick. Of course there would be other players involved in doing a deal for Tampa’s first over all but I’m just showing an example of what MLSE can afford to do. They can afford to throw away $30M to gain something big back. Only about two other teams can afford to throw away cash like this to better their team. So far MLSE has decided to use that super important amnesty buyout to get rid of Komi which is a piddly 2/3rd’s of $3.75M. Big deal!!! AND I really think they are to cheap to use the other one this year on Grabo or Lyles. It’s all about money for MLSE and always has been. Money has always trumped winning for them going way back to the Ballard days right up to today. The teachers pension was the worst but Rogers, Bell are showing they aren’t far behind.

          • MLSE maybe a cash cow, but like every other team…they too have a Cap Ceiling. As for Komi, if you knew anything, you’d know that his $3.575M is his buried (AHL) pay, his cap hit for the team is $4.5M. Which is significant for a 3rd/4th line stay-at-home dman. As for the buyout for Lecavalier, it just doesn’t make financial sense (cap-wise), if Toronto were to do that, they’d have to pay him $2,142,857 till 2026/27 (18 years). That is worst than Bryz and Philly’s situation.

          • My mistake, buyouts don’t count against he salary cap…hey, at least I can correct my mistakes…unlike some others in here. Anyway, with that in mind (buyout not counting against the cap), that Tampa trade scenario wouldn’t be that bad, from a fans perspective!

To Toronto: Lecavalier + 3rd Overall Pick
            To Tampa: 21st Overall + Grabovski + D’Amigo

Toronto buys out Lecavalier and can select Barkov. Tampa gets a 1st rounder, can either keep or buyout Grabovski, and they get a prospect. Then they also shed $2,227,273M and their aleady $2,407,251 available cap space = $4,634,524M in re-signing/signing players.

          • EDIT

To Toronto: Lecavalier + 3rd Overall Pick
To Tampa: 21st Overall + Gardiner

Will post new financial numbers shortly!

          • …continued from last post

To Toronto: Lecavalier + 3rd Overall
To Tampa: 21st Overall + Gardiner

Tampa loses/rids $7,727,273 from Lecavalier, then adds on Gardiners $1,116,667 = $6,610,606 + $2,407,251 they already have in free cap space = $9,017,857 in available cap space to re-sign or sign players this year. Qualifying offer to players like; Briere, Clarkson, Weiss etc. Not neccessarily those, but an example in general.

          • It wouldn’t take Gardiner to do this deal considering the enormous figure of $30M to buyout Vinny. TB would not take Grabo back on trade and have to spend a huge amount to buy him out.

            To Tampa: Toronto’s 1st (22nd over all I believe) + Colborne
To Leafs: Tampa’s 3rd over all + Vinny (buyout $30M)

Tampa’s cap is reduced by $7.8M per season for the next 8 years and Vinny resigns a 6 year deal with Tampa at $2.5M (which is what he lost by being bought out). Tampa basically sheds $5.3M off their cap for the next 8 years plus get Colborne and the 22nd over all pick and loose the 3rd over all.

My point isn’t that this deal is the right one or the wrong one it is that MLSE has the cash to do a deal like this but are proving they don’t want to win at any cost because all they are using their amnesty buyout for is a measly one year Komi contract.

          • What about:

Edmonton has $14.9M in available cap space right now. What about:

To Toronto: Dubnyk + Horcoff + 7th Overall
To Edmonton: Phaneuf + 21st Overall + Reimer

Dubnyk can back up for Bernier, Horcoff can fill the 1C and Toronto can select…maybe…select Nurse. Edmonton sheds cap space, gets a puck moving dman that can man the point and eat a lot of minutes. They also get someone to fill their #1 netminder need and still select a player in the 1st round.

          • Toronto selects 21st overall by the way

          • “It is believed the Lightning and Maple Leafs had discussed such a maneuver regarding Vincent Lecavalier, who has seven years and $45 million remaining on his contract, with the buyout thus worth slightly more than $30 million.

The clubs theoretically would have concocted a swap in which Tampa Bay would have sent an asset — perhaps a draft pick — to rolling-in-dough Toronto along with Lecavalier, who would have re-signed a more modest deal with the Lightning after being bought out by the Leafs.” ~ Larry Brooks

NHL closed this loophole because of this rumour. You cannot sign with a team now after you get dealt and bought out by another.

  16. MacKinnon isn’t Crosby or anywhere close to Crosby. If I compared him to a player, it’d be Jonathan Toews. He’s going to be really good, but not great.

Jones? He has a chance to be great. I really now am starting to wonder if the Avs are playing headgames. Roy would! Sakic, though?

    • I just don’t get some of these deals. Mackinnon may/may not be great, same for Jones. But I think both have excellent prospects. But the idea that the Avs might get Gudbransson and STILL get to draft Jones? I think they’d be fools not to do it, if that trade was actually available. [I have no idea why teams would trade a good prospect to move up ONE spot in the draft, when nobody can decide which prospect is better between Mackinnon & Jones]

P.S. Toews is great, I respectfully disagree :) (top 10 goalscorer + Selke winner + captaincy skills. I love the kid!)

      • and a 2x cup winner. twice as many than Crosby.

        • Thats a fancy way of saying one more then Crosby :-P

    • I am confused a bit. If COL is postering and takes Jones in the end and FL gets MacKinnon…who will mentor Mac and Heub in the center position in FL? I just highly doubt FL can win a bidding war for Weiss (even if he wants to stay).

IF COL is NOT postering and do intend on MacK…..then where is Statsny being traded to? Or is CGY drafting the player COL wants at 6 and swapping him for O’Reilly (when he is able to be traded)

      ..thoughts?

      • I hope Calgary doesnt do that, they need to use all 3 1st round draft picks and start putting a core group together.

  18. A team I’m interested in watching in the next few weeks is St. Louis. They have 3 key rfa’s still to sign and don’t usually spend to the cap. They have 2 solid goalies and a young jake Allen who could step I also. Plenty of talent and young players who could move up in the line up as well. Oshie or perron would be a huge pick up for a team if they can get either of them out. Also what about Barrett jackman? Is he still a decent d man? Haven’t watched him in a few years.

  19. Via TSN on Craig McTavish

“I’m motivated to do something to help this current roster,” he said. “I want to make sure we’re at least able to add a big piece with that first pick (No. 7), but outside of that I’m pretty open minded to doing anything.”

    • MacT also said that he hadn’t been tempted by any of the offers for the 7th pick.
Your Phaneuf/Reimer/21st for Dubnyk/Horcoff/7th makes no sense. Oilers don’t need to free up cap space and wouldn’t be with this trade anyway. I don’t see how Reimer is an upgrade to Dubnyk. Phaneuf is a UFA in a year. Horcoff is paid like a 1C but he is a good 3C in reality.

      • I just have a feeling something is going happen there, not saying necessarily with the, Leafs but with the connections of Eakins the fairly long discussions with Nonis ect. It would kind of make sense, now Mac is saying the Oil won’t be buying out Horcoff (dosent mean someone else wont) Eakins does love Gardner maybe try and pry him out of TO. I hope not but Riley is the same type of player with more upside I think. At any rate I really don’t think the Oil will be using that pick to many untouchable type guys there to deal

        • MacT has said he would trade the 7th pick for a player and a later 1st round pick around 15th. Speculation is because he would want Lazar. Leafs pick at 21st might be too far back. Riley would be iffy as he is more of a prospect then a player still and Oilers have lots of D prospects. Gardiner maybe but I still think MacT’s preference is a beefy forward that can play on one of the top two lines.

          • You’re right that Riley is still to green that is why I’m kinda getting the sinking feeling that our first bone head GM moves might involve Gardner who Eakins was using 25-30 mins a night best friend is Shultz plus maybe A kuli or McClaren both have size and the pick, I’ll say the same thing as I said with the Phanuef deal if I’m the leafs I’m not sure I want to be dealing any of our D we need more of it but I just can’t seem to shake the feeling the Oilers and Leafs are up to something…The Oilers are for sure with that 7 pick and They are going to extort a very good D-man out of someone.

  20. I’d seriously take a look at adding vinny if I’m the leafs and not buying him out. If he’s willing to be traded I’d look into it see if you can get Tampa to add maybe there 2nd + Connolly for something like Liles + Holzer

    • Leaf’s can’t afford Vinny’s contract. Not even close.

      • Why? If you get Tampa to take Liles and his 3.9 your taking on 7.7 from vinny, so your cap goes up 4 mill. Now if your resign bozak that be 4 -5 mill so what’s they difference ? Vinny would be a very useful player for a team like toronto. Young guys like kadri and colborne could learn a lot and vinny still has skill that he isn’t just a 3rd liner.
