NHL Postseason Canadian Corner – Friday, May 31, 2013.

Updates on the Oilers, the Canadiens to part ways with Michael Ryder, calling upon the Maple Leafs to add more stars and the Jets reach a deal with an ECHL team.

Canadiens won't re-sign Michael Ryder.

Canadiens won’t re-sign Michael Ryder.

LE JOURNAL DE MONTREAL: Michael Ryder’s agent said his client will not be part of Canadiens GM Michel Bergevin’s plans for next season. Ryder is an unrestricted free agent this summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Not surprising. Ryder was okay after joining the Habs in a mid-season but ineffective in the Canadiens five-game first round elimination by the Ottawa Senators.

TORONTO STAR: Kevin McGran believes the only thing which truly separated the Boston Bruins from the Maple Leafs was Zdeno Chara, and called upon the Leafs to add an expensive free agent or two.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: McGran makes a good point about how the addition of Chara via free agency set the Bruins on their path to a Stanley Cup, and if there were someone of Chara’s caliber available in this summer’s UFA market, the Leafs should definitely try to land him. Unfortunately, there’s no one like Chara available this summer, and unless the UFA depth gets bolstered via compliance buyouts this summer, the Leafs should invest more wisely on affordable depth this summer.

EDMONTON SUN: The Oilers have signed Russian defenseman Anton Belov to a one-year entry-level contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This is obviously the first move by new GM Craig MacTavish to bolster his defense, and hopefully it won’t be the last one. Belov could pan out, but I daresay MacTavish will also be shopping for experienced NHL depth this summer.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jonathan Willis believes Magnus Paajarvi may have played his way back into the Oilers plans this season, and wonders if Linus Omark could find his way back to the Oilers this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Paajarvi may have played his way into the Oilers plans for next season, but I still believe they’ll try to trade Omark’s rights.

WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets have reached an agreement with the Ontario (California) Reign of the ECHL to become their second minor league affiliate.

  1. Don’t remind me of Chara. John Muckler was an idiot. Everyone In the organization said keep Chara… so he says no — keep Redden. The worse move the Sens ever made was having Muckler as GM.

Some of his decisions have really hurt the Sens.. Chara, Hossa, trading Laich for nothing… trading Havlat for basically no return.. Drafting Brian Lee instead of Marc Staal or Kopitar. Well if you only have 2 full time scouts.. you really can’t draft properly.

  2. A quick look at the prospective UFA market and it’s readily apparent that there’s not much available in the way of players who could impact a team’s fortunes. In recent year the Leafs have had success with lower level free agents (MacArthur, McClement, Orr), but the Buds need to make a statement this off-season. The East will be a lot tougher next year, with Detroit in the mix and bounce back seasons expected from the likes of Tampa, Carolina and Philly, not to mention a gruelling 82-game sked. Leafs can ill-afford to stand pat or tread water with same line-up. Nonis and company will have to make a couple of key moves that will improve the club and keep it’s progress going in the right direction. They may have to get imaginative!
