Updates on Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson, Canucks seek permission from Leafs to speak with Dallas Eakin, and Shawn Horcoff remains important to the Oilers.

Jason Spezza was not 100 percent against the Penguins.

Jason Spezza was not 100 percent against the Penguins.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators center Jason Spezza admitted he still wasn’t fully recovered from back surgery when he rejoined his club in their series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, while captain Daniel Alfredsson suggests his family could factor into his future plans.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It was obvious to anyone watching the Senators-Penguins series that Spezza wasn’t 100 percent. He’ll be fully recovered by training camp in September. As for Alfredsson, it’s apparent he can still play well, but family could be the deciding factor if he returns for one more season.

TORONTO STAR: The Vancouver Canucks have sought permission from the Maple Leafs to speak with Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakin.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While there is some bad blood between the respective managements of both teams, I doubt the Leafs would deny Eakin the opportunity to speak with the Canucks.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jonathan Willis believes Shawn Horcoff remains an important player for the Oilers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I suspect new GM Craig MacTavish shares that view, but he’s now at best a third-line center, and while he plays a valuable role, he’s not worth a cap hit of $5.5 million per season for the next two seasons. It remains to be seen if the Oilers use one of their compliance buyouts on Horcoff.

One Response to NHL Postseason Canadian Corner – Sunday, May 26, 2013.

  1. Sandy says:

Not only was Spezza’s back not completely healed.. he injured his knee during the rehab and needs off-season knee surgery (meniscus sp?).

Michalek is going to go to a specialist in Germany about his knee that is giving him pain.

Karlsson said he still can’t do things he normally does with his injured leg/ankle. We are all hoping that he can return to his pre-injury form next season.. or Cooke will have destroyed another career like he did Marc Savard’s.
