NHL Rumor Mill – August 18, 2014

Updates on former Blackhawks prospect Kevin Hayes, plus the Dallas Stars have a blueline issue.

Former Blackhawks prospect Kevin Hayes could narrow his list of suitors today.

Former Blackhawks prospect Kevin Hayes could narrow his list of suitors today.

NBC SPORTS: Dhiren Mahiban cites reports indicating former Chicago Blackhawks Kevin Hayes and his representatives spent Sunday narrowing their list of NHL suitors, with the intent of speaking to four or five teams today. The Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers are believed among them.

CSNNE.COM: Joe Haggerty reports a source indicates the Bruins have expressed interest in Hayes. The  Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche,  Nashville Predators,  New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are also rumored to be in the mix.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hayes will certainly add some spice to what’s lately been a quiet unrestricted free agent market.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: cites the Stars blog “Defending Big D” noting the club’s defense corps lacks a right-handed shot, which their opponents could exploit during games.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This isn’t a trade rumor, but it is worth noting for the Stars entering this season. It’s an issue which could force management into the trade market to address if it becomes a problem.

  1. One more month…. :-)
Depending on how camp goes, for Granberg Finn and Percy, The Stars would be a good place to send Franson.

    • They already have Franson types. Gardiner would’ve been a better idea.

      • Gardiner is a left hand shot, Dallas is looking specifically for a right hander.

        • Lol…was just going to say having some trouble reading or just plain dont know what you are talking about? Plus besides maybe Golagoski not sure there is a pp guy quite like Franson on the Stars, or a guy besides Dailey who is as physical as Franson. Gonchar Golagoski Dailey and Jordie Benn yep not a whole lot of Franson types there.

          • Leafs would be silly to give up on Gardiner so early.

          • Oh here we go O’Shticky is back and in a more dumber role this time.

Guy I was talking about a defenseman in general. If you could read (which I’m doubting you can) you’d be able to tell that I was doing just that. Benn and Daley are both better then Franson and play the same game. Franson would be a 5-6 guy on the Stars. Hell the Stars could bring up Oleksiak or Nemeth and have them play on their wrong side and they’d still be better then Franson. If they are looking for a guy who can shoot on the PP and put points up they can easily go and nab McBain off the free agency market. He’s not good defensively but shoots right and will put up points.

          • Sure….lol

          • “Who can shoot on the pp and put up points” McBain past 2 years 25 points

            Cody Franson 62 points
            Trevory Daily 38 points
            Jordie Benn 26 points

Ill say it again big physical right handed shot help the pp with him and Goligosky, much better than having Gonchar playing his wrong side. Franson would be a good pick up for a team like Dallas.

          • where do you get that franson is physical??? lol typical leaf fan thinking the player is more than he is!! I mean shticky you follow the leafs and still don’t realize that franson is not physical at all

          • You really are an idiot arent ya Jello?…Franson led the league in hits the past 2 years fool. Pretty easy stat to look up.

          • Schticky….you should look up the hits leaders if it’s so easy. Matt Martin of the New York Islanders led the league in hits each of the past three seasons by a wide margin. Franson finished second last year and 25th the year before. I don’t think he’s a physical player either. He stepped it up last year but it’s a highly subjective stat. What may be a hit at the ACC probably wouldn’t be a hit anywhere else. Just a light brush!

          • Just to help ya out
            Hits Defenceman

            Cody Franson 282
            Radko Gudas 273
            Luke Schenn 260
            Mark Stuart 229
            Dion Phaneuf 227
            Brooks Orpik 221
            Ben Lovejoy 215
            Jared Cowen 214
            Robyn Regehr 212

For a guy who’s not physical at all he seems to hit alot more than guys that do nothing but hit.

          • Wow gdogg could that not be said about for just about any stat for any player in any rink in the league including shots saves etc its off the leagues stats not the Leafs…..it would balance out between rinks and players its not like he played all 84 games at the acc…really stretching the arguement there.

          • And we are talking D men right? Martin is a forward, but hey never know maybe a hit on long Island is not a hit in the ACC….rediculious.

          • Next before everyone starts up saying I am overvaluing a player read over all the posts….I never said Franson was worth a firstround pick or anything substantial (I didnt actually say he was worth anyting) I just said he is a physical d man good for the pp righthanded shot who could be a good fit in big D…..Now continue with the hate I guess lol.

          • God u r an idiot shticky just cause u bump a guy into the boards doesn’t mean your physical!! Lol quit sounding stupid everyone is getting sick of it…….. Oh wait jes was right u can’t read so u don’t know that everyone is trying help u out

          • On the McBain thing the guy played on the 30th ranked offensive team this past season and the 14th ranked the year before. Franson was on the 14th best this season and the 6th best the season before. The goal differential between those totals was 90 goals I believe. That is a lot of goals my friend. I’m sure McBain would have similar offensive numbers as Franson had he been on Toronto the past two seasons. You cannot just look at the personal numbers guy. You have to compare their teams, their pairings and so on and so forth,

I’m not saying Franson would be a bad choice for Dallas. All I’m saying is why trade for a defenseman who you can easily get next summer without giving up anything. McBain, Bellmore, Diaz, Morris, Salo and Sarich are all available and all are right handed shots. They would cost close to nothing in terms of price and absolutely nothing in terms of assets going the other way.

          • Again someone who spells you as u and are as r, who thinks Subban is a 10 million dollar player and Staal isnt worth 5 questioning, someones intelligence and reading comprehension is rather humorous….Does that mean all the other guys on that list like Goudas Orpik Lovejoy and Regehr just bump into to people and are not physical either?

Jes you didnt know Gardiner was a left handed shot, next time just admit it, not really a big deal. Instead of making a big arguement out of it and flip flopping excuses in and out and looking like an ass saying compare teams offense and all the rest. If a guy no one signed yet is such a great option and only had a bad year because of the team he played for, then why is he still looking for a job? If the Leafs thought that one of their younger guys was capable of taking Fransons spot they would probably move him for very little just to avoid the circus of negotiating his contract. His numbers and play are much better than guys who cant find nhl jobs.

    • Leafs fans at it yet again. No mention of the Leafs anywhere in this article but somehow it’s all about the Leafs. Do us a favour and keep your dumb trade rumors to yourself or your video gaming.

      • Right handed d man…there was no mention of a a team that could possibly be looking for a right handed d man? If you hate hearing about The Leafs dont go to a thread where there maybe Leaf fans, simple really…. Dumb trade rumor lol saying a guy could be a fit on another team (no mention of what would be involved) is a long way off a dumb trade rumor.

        • Lol Shticky you shouldn’t be schooling people on grammar and spelling. Rediculious? Lol hahahaha. The correct spelling is RIDICULOUS, lol such a jackass.

“it would balance out between rinks and players its not like he played all 84 games at the acc…”

You do know a full NHL season consists of 82 games right not 84? 41 home and 41 away?

And yes I did know Gardiner was a left handed shot. Your just an idiot that doesn’t actually read the comments right away without even understanding what someone is saying. It makes a huuuuuuge difference on what team you are on. McBain would have close to Franson numbers offensively had he been on the Laughs. If you can’t see that well like most posters here are saying are well your a friggin idiot. I thoroughly explained to what I meant but again your stupid Leafs fan brain came into the way and well let you down once again. Oh ya the only reason McBain hasn’t been signed is because of this era we began awhile back maybe you’ve heard of it, it’s called the SALARY CAP ERA???? Haven’t heard of it? Ya I figured.

          • Lol Shticky you shouldn’t be schooling people on grammar and spelling. Rediculious? Lol hahahaha. The correct spelling is RIDICULOUS, lol.

Your just made because your less than simpleton mind couldn’t understand what someone has wrote. Then when I thoroughly explain it to you, you follow that up with oh don’t dance around the subject. I wouldn’t have to dance around if those teachers of yours actually did their job while teaching. Hell I don’t know, maybe you are English is your second language. If so I forgive ya :)

          • You knew Gardiner was a left shot but did not know Richards wasnt a Flyer (gary had to let you in on that little secret a while back) or the difference between Chris Johnson (running back) and Chad Johnson (goalie)? lol sure, typeos on my phone yes I have some (quite a few, and yes I speak a few languages) but u and r? or in your case using your instead of you’re, whats your excuse?

  2. Thinking the Hayes sweepstakes comes down to the Calgary Flames or the Florida Panthers.

    • I see Colorado and Boston as possible destinations. My guess is Montreal.

      • Montreal is possible, but they already need to move out a center.
        Colorado – same as Montreal
Boston has big cap-issues, which is why Krug has yet to be signed, so I don’t see a fit.

        • According to Capgeek, Colorado has $2,844,738 in cap space and Boston is over by around $800K. It would be tough for Boston to make room, but from what I’ve read he can only sign a entry level deal for $900K? Bos needs to sign Krug and Col needs to sign Barrie.

          • That doesn’t count sending Marc Savard on long term IR. That would free up some money. Then they would just deal one of their D-Men to make a bit more room

          • Boston has to sign both Smith and Krug and will have to make a trade or two to fit Hayes into the cap.

      • Why would Hayes go to Montreal? He probably hates that team with a passion.

I’d put Boston number one on my list for Hayes but the Bruins have no cap space. It will come down to Florida or Calgary bank on it.

      • There would be room for him in Colorado. There has been a lot of interest in him, according to the Denver Post and Adrian Dater. I think the Avs would sign him, for sure, but the cards are on the kid’s table as to where he wants to play. The Avs are still deep at Center, even without Stastny now. However, positions are still up for grabs. Everyone saw what happened to the Avs with out Mitchell and Duchene (Hejda also played with a broken hand since game 3) in the playoffs against the Wild, so all the depth they can muster for injuries will be welcome. Plus, Roy likes versatile players and will play them at any position he thinks they can play.
He’d probably get more ice time in Calgary or Florida, but if he wants a cup sooner than later, it would be Boston, Pittsburgh or the Avalanche.

    • Agreed. I think the Flames have the huge advantage to having his BC linemates already in their system. He recently tweeted about them being his best friends. Who wouldn’t want to play with their best friends who also provided you the best success thus far in your career? That alone is a pretty compelling argument. Add to that, the Flames are lacking severely on the right wing, meaning he will have a great shot to be an important part of the team, as opposed to being buried in some other team’s depth chart, and you have the makings of an ideal situation for a young prospect.

    • Montreal that’s a good one.
He was born in Boston more than likely a Bruins fan.
Montreal is the most hated team.
      Unless he’s a Montreal fan.
      Calgary ,Boston or Florida.
      Friends Calgary
      Brother Florida
      Family Boston

  3. Aren’t teams supposed to be making their teams better by now? Theres 13 teams in the west that can’t beat Chicago or LA, what are they doing about it? Theres 13 teams in the east that do not stack up against Pitts, Boston, NYR ext. What are they doing about it? I’ve never seen so much contentment in sucking arse. Theres 25 teams that better get aggressive or it will be over by Dec 1st. I feel sorry for the fans whose teams are to lazy or scared to upgrade or mix it up.

    • 12 teams in west. my numbers are off i know Shticky

    • I had similar thought as seems the Rangers retooled just enough to stay with Boston and Pitts… but honestly none of those 3 stack up against the Kings, Blackhawks….still

  4. FWIW, Sergei Gonchar has almost always played on his ‘off’ side throughout his career, and has said he prefers it.

    • 40 years old and slowing down considerably, not sure he should even be playing anymore let alone on the wrong side. I think in todays NHL a 40 year old D man playing his wrong side is a recipe to get beat to the outside an awful lot.

  5. Pretty amusing to thin k that “opponents might exploit the team’s lack of right-hander defensemen…”
When I started watching in the 50′s, most teams didn’t have on right-handed defenseman. Kids were forced to write RIGHT-handed, and it translaed to left shooters in hockey.

  6. Does anyone know the answer to why a European player who is 18 coming over on an EL deal can play in the AHL, but anyone who plays in the CHL has to get sent back to Junior?

I was just reading that WIlliam Nylander signed his EL deal and has 3 options, play for Modo, play for Marlies or play for Leafs. If a player like Drouin last year wanted to play in the AHL who is the same age as Nylander he was not allowed, he had to either stick in NHL or go back to Juniors.

Is there some sort of agreement between ahl/chl/nhl that doesn’t include European players? It’s kind of unfair if that is the case

    • If hre plays in Sweeden I believe his entry level slides the same as being returned to a junior team, but if they play over the 18 games and get returned it counts as year 1 on their entry level deal….not sure if this helps to play in the AHL depending on what league you come from you must be 19 and can not play in the AHL untill after your 19th birthday, Morgan Rielly could not be sent to the Marlies untill March but could have been sent back to junior before then, but since he was over the 18 games it already burned a year of his ELC, it really doesnt make sense to use an 18 year old Canadian junior for more than the 18 games, if he is 18 years old and going to be in and out of you cant send him to the AHL, may asell send him back to junior instead of keeping him around untill he turns 19 and not burn his first year. 18 year olds from Europe can play in the AHL, and keep their first year of ELC.

      • The NHL and the CHL have an agreement whereby any player with junior eligibility who has played with a CHL team cannot be demoted to the AHL but must be returned to the CHL. Doesn’t include overagers.

        • Lol yes this is much more clear, thanks Harvey.

  7. I really do not believe BC linemates thing will play into Hayes’ decision. His goal is to play in the NHL soon, so expecting to play with college linemates probably will not be a factor. I honestly do not believe this kid will be anything more than a 3rd line forward.

    • Even if what you say is true about playing with former linemates and school friends means nothing, the Flames would be one of the easier teams in the league to make for a winger.

      • The Flames need Hayes, but does he need the Flames? If he has options, I doubt Cal-GARY is his number one destination. $$$ not the issue since he gets a EL contract. Don’t know but it will be interesting to see where he lands and why. Calgary, Edmonton and especially Winnipeg – all having a tough time getting UFA talent unless they overpay – just the truth.

  8. And the Flames need all the talent they can gather. 24th overall pick can not be that bad. Calgary needs to sell him big time.

  9. From what I read about Hayes he is a huge Bruins fan so don’t count them out. They don’t have to sign Krug or Smith till after they put Savard on long term. If Chia passes on this kid cause his big signing of the off season is Caron who is a total bust he could face a lot of flak. I think Savard’s contract will free up close to 4 million an they could move a Dman
