NHL Rumors From The Blogosphere – July 31 2014.

Given the lack of mainstream media NHL rumors, here’s my take on a few kicking around the NHL blogosphere. Enjoy!

The Vancouver Canucks offered a package of Alex Burrows, Jacob Markstrom, Hunter Shinkaruk and a first round pick for Winnipeg’s Evander Kane.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: After which they wound up listening to a dial tone. If the Canucks were serious about Kane, they would have to offer up more than that. Burrows is ageing and brittle, Markstrom has yet to prove himself at the NHL level and Shinkaruk has yet to prove he can establish himself as an NHL star.

The Arizona Coyotes, Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators are pursuing Michael Del Zotto.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Why would the Coyotes want another puck-moving defenseman? Unless they trade Keith Yandle for a scoring forward this makes no sense. The Senators need a skilled shutdown defenseman and already have one of the top offensive blueliners in the league in Erik Karlsson, so I don’t see why they would pursue Del Zotto. He’s a left-handed shot, which doesn’t make him a fit with the Red Wings, who seek a right-handed shot.

The Washington Capitals are on Martin Brodeur’s list of possible destinations.

Where could Dustin Penner end up?

Where could Dustin Penner end up?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unfortunately for Brodeur the Capitals have no reason to sign him. They’ve already got Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer in their system, plus they added Justin Peters.

The Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings and Winnipeg Jets are interested in Dustin Penner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Flames already have Curtis Glencross, Mason Raymond and Brandon Bollig, plus they’ll give Johnny Gaudreau a long look during training camp and preseason. I believe the Wings are content to stick with their young forwards, plus their priority is finding a right-shooting defenseman. The Jets could probably use Penner as a third-line left wing but management seems to have made all the additions they want to make for now. That could change during preseason.

The Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers could talk trade. The Oilers seek depth at center while the Canadiens need to make room for Alex Galchenyuk at center.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Habs were to move a center it could be David Desharnais. The Oilers might prefer Tomas Plekanec but he has a modified no-trade clause and would probably reject a trade to Edmonton. For now, however, I think the Canadiens will go into training camp with their current roster to better evaluate their needs.

  1. The Lehner has resigned.

    Thank goodness.

Rumored deals for McArthur and Ryan yet to be announced.
    Go Sens Go

    • So say we all…

    • Nice deal too, I’d still be surprised if Ryan committed himself this early.

  2. Re the Edm/Habs rumours. I think Pleks might be moved before his contract is up but the earliest I see that happening now is the trade deadline. Too much leadership has left the Habs so once the year has started and if others step up, then he might be moved. As for DD, to me the issue with moving him is his chemistry with Max PAC. Those guys are really tight (max was the first to shoot back At Danny Coderre when he tweet to have DD sent Back to Hamilton) and I think other teams would be wary of taking DD without Getting Max IMO

    • That really only leaves Larry as a possible tradeable centre. And he just re-signed a new deal. I would also say he is the heir to Pleky’s role once he leaves.

I think DD going will be the only way Galchenyuk ever plays centre for the Habs in the near future.

    • Agreed. Doesn’t mean DD would never be traded, but I think Bergevin would have to think extra hard about whether to do it, as it could damage Pacioretty’s game (whether by chemistry or mentally, for having lost a friend, etc)

  3. DD is a talented centre that is a great addition to just about any team, but is undersized which can limit him. The Oilers already have a few top end guys who are undersized and if they are looking for depth down the middle, they need someone both skilled and larger (especially being in the western conference). Pieks maybe, but DD is just not going to give them that.

  4. I love it when Spector dismantles the rumours that get spewed by the internet this time of year.

    Keep up the good work.

    • I know. That trade was absolutely ridiculous. Seems something a Leafs fan would make up;). But ya unless Horvat is in on that deal no way Chevy even thinks about it.

  5. I believe Benning is SEriously going after Kane….and I “think” they could make it happen….with the right pieces going the other way

  6. If Benning is seriously pursuing Kane, I hope he doesn’t empty the cupboards of prospects and draft picks to do so. Offering up Shinkaruk and Horvat as a part do a package would be a Gillis like move. I hope he does not go full Gillis. No one wins if he goes full Gillis.

  7. Evander Kane needs a change of scenery. The Canucks need scoring but I have to believe Benning is smart enough to know the prospect cupboard is only just getting re-stocked.
Kane has some growing up to do for sure and I think being around guys like Linden, the Twins, Bieksa and a few other seasoned vets could pay off for sure. However I am content at this point in a re-build, do not mortgage the future when the last couple drafts have finally produced a few guys with some upside. Horvat, Cassels, Shinkaruk, Gaunce and others need a little time to mature, grow and be able to prove themselves. The Canucks are not a contender any more, they are at best a bubble team. It has been so long since Canuck fans have had a chance to see and cheer for some young talent. I for one can deal with “rookie” mistakes, but for god sake give them a chance. AV didn’t and Torts never had them to use.
I would love to see a Kane here but not at the expense of our young talent. 1st round draft picks are a commodity when you will most likely be a lottery team, Connor McDavid is still a possibility.

  8. Would love to see pens some how get Kane. They definatly have the D prospects to trade off but would have to move salary to make it work. They still have to sign Sutter with only just over 4 million in cap space, most of which Sutter will eat up,and well deserved. Would not give up Sutter for anything! He is top priority over everything. Screw saving money for the trade dead line! GO FOR IT NOW. trade off Dupuis, hate to see him go but its for the greater good, work some cap magic. Hell go over alittle, like some other contending teams. It could happen if they really want him and not hurt but make them scary better. Kuntiz-Crosby-Hornquist, Kane-Malkin-we’ll put Bennett there, Spaling-Sutter-Coreau(this line could end up being just sick, could end up being best points against/points for line). Line 4 wil take care of itself with all the TWEEK trades and resignings and draft(can anybody say Kasperi Kapanen, future star), Goc, Kapanen, ,Payerl and a few,FINALLY, forward prospects that may be able to fill a spot. But all im saying is that with one smart trade the Pens could be deadly.– CAUSION –THIS IS A BIAS OPION BECAUSE IM A PENS FAN. IM NOT PROPOSING A TRADE TO TORONTO OF ANY KIND, SO NO SPECULATION FROM LEAFS FANS!!!! PS- Spector keep up the GREAT WORK. ONLY ONE PLACE FOR HOCKEY TALK IS HERE.
