NHL Rumors from the Blogosphere – October 15, 2011.

In today’s accumulation of notable trade and free agent rumors from the blogosphere: 10 teams that will be shopping for goalies at the trade deadline, 9 teams that will shop for defensemen at the trade deadline, wondering if Miikka Kiprusoff could make the Blue Jackets Cup contenders, and more Maple Leafs speculation. Enjoy!

BLEACHER REPORT: listed ten teams “that will be shopping for some help in net when February rolls around”, which includes the New Jersey Devils, NY Islanders and Ottawa Senators,  nine teams that “will be shopping for a defenseman at the deadline”, including the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues, as well as posing the question of whether or  not a Miikka Kiprusoff trade could make the Columbus Blue Jackets Cup contenders.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Injuries and poor performance can of course force teams which being the season with seemingly plenty of depth on their blueline or in goal to seek depth by the trade deadline. That being said, the Devils have a solid backup in Johan Hedberg if Martin Brodeur gets hurt (as we saw last season and earlier this week), the Isles have sufficient depth with Al Montoya and Evgeni Nabokov, while the Senators could call up Robin Lehner if needed. The Wings, Leafs and Blues have plenty of blueline depth so they’ve no need to seek any upgrades. As for Kiprusoff, he’s not going anywhere, but if he were dealt to the Blue Jackets, they’ll still lack suitable depth at center and on defense to be consider “Cup contenders”.

HOCKEYBUZZ: “Eklund” claimed the Toronto Maple Leafs “possibly” have interest in Columbus Blue Jackets center Derrick Brassard (whom Eklund claimed earlier in the week had two teams with “huge interest” in, though the Blue Jackets aren’t shopping him), plus they also had interest in Flyers rookie center Brayden Schenn.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Leafs are reportedly in the market for a top six, “impact” forward, which Brassard and Schenn clearly aren’t at this stage in their careers.

GATHER.COM: Larry Seely claimed the “latest rumor” had the Nashville Predators shipping Shea Weber to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:  The Predators won’t trade Weber as long as they’re in the playoff hunt, while the Leafs have plenty of blueline depth and are more interested in an impact forward.

  1. Larry Seely said Shea Weber to the Leafs? No way..no sense..no comment.. The Leafs have interest in any centre that can win faceoffs, can score maybe 20 goals or more themselves and is 6’3″ or more in height but then again, the other 29 teams in the NHL want that kind of player too.

Miikka Kiprusoff won’t be traded anywhere folks, not unless some team offers Calgary a trade they just cant refuse and I don’t think that’s coming from anybody just yet. Iginla appears at odds about things as his game seems distracted and unfocused, leaving question’s of what’s up ?

  2. Could be his back is bugging him still

  3. Not sure who this guy is for the “Bleacher Report” — but why would Ottawa shop for a goaltender after 5 games played? Lehner is staying in Binghamton. Sens are not making the playoffs… so why would they trade for a goaltender? I’m beginning to wonder if this guy knows anything about hockey… he obviously knows nothing about the Senators.
If they trade at the deadline — it is to trade OUT for picks… that’s all.

  4. I agree with you Sandy. The Sens are not trying to win a cup any time soon. It’s called rebuilding for a reason. Making the playoffs is hardly likely either. The Oilers are just yet another team that is proving that, in the current draft setup of the NHL, a rebuilding team does best to lose a lot and finish low in order to be a good team again. By the time the Sens are ready, Lehner will be the starter.

And why does “Eklund” get ANY press at all? He just pulls things out of his *** and posts it as rumours.

I think there is a prerequisite for all rumours posts that SOMEONE is going to Toronto….

  5. Wouldn’t it be easier to say who isn’t rumored to be traded to the leafs? These bloggers aren’t stupid, mention the Leafs and get a ton of hits

  6. Smoke…yes it would be easier to say who isn’t rumoured to be traded to the leafs, only problem there is that they are also rumoured to go there as well. If you can tie your own skates, you are rumoured to be traded to the leafs at some point.

  7. Weber is a great player, arguably the best d-man in the league right now, but I just don’t see any trade that would make sense for either side that would send him to Toronto.
