In today’s roundup of NHL blogosphere-generated rumor goodness: The Oilers are seeking a top six forward…or not…Four teams “pursuing” Kyle Turris…Wondering where J.P. Dumont could end up. Enjoy!

HOCKEYBUZZ: “Eklund” claims “multiple sources” say the Edmonton Oilers are talking to Carolina about a “top six forward”, hinting a deal could happen “quicker than anyone imagined”…He also claims the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs have joined the Canucks and Islanders in pursuit of Phoenix Coyotes holdout Kyle Turris.

Richard Cloutier meanwhile claims the Oilers are desperately seeking a “veteran defenseman”, suggesting Linus Omark as a more likely trade bait candidate, as well as listing possible trade targets as Buffalo’s Andrej Sekeras, Pittsburgh’s Matt Niskanen, Phoenix’s Rostislav Klesla and Carolina’s Jamie McBain.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson claims the Oilers top priority is an experienced puck-moving defenseman, and while Sam Gagner was injured in last night’s preseason game, I don’t really think the Oilers need is for a top six forward right now. Not with Hall, Hemsky, Horcoff, Smyth, Eberle, Gagner (despite his injury) already there filling top-six roles, and the possibility of Paajarvi stepping up his play this season. Besides, it’s not as though the Hurricanes have top six forwards they can spare, especially when the concern for the ‘Canes entering training camp was finding suitable wingers to play on Eric Staal’s line.

If the Oilers do seek an experienced puck-moving defenseman, I doubt they pry McBain out of Carolina, and the Coyotes and Sabres aren’t likely to part with Klesla or Sekeras. Niskanen might be available, but it’s too early to say for sure.

As for the Turris “pursuit”, I doubt those teams listed by “Eklund” would seriously invest in a kid coming off a 25-point performance who is currently staging a holdout. The Islanders, by the way, currently have John Tavares, Frans Nielsen, Josh Bailey and Marty Reasoner as their centers. They have no need for Turris. The Leafs meanwhile have invested in Tim Connolly, are hoping for Matthew Lombardi to make an early-season return from concussion, and also have Mikhail Grabovski and Tyler Bozak at center. Unless Lombardi suffers a season-ending setback, I don’t believe the Leafs will see the need to go shopping for another center, but if they do, I doubt it’ll be Turris. Sure, there’s concern in Vancouver over Ryan Kesler’s injury status, but with Henrik Sedin, Manny Malhotra and Maxim Lapierre established centers, and with Cody Hodgson battling for a spot, there appears little reason for the Canucks to pursue Turris. The Hurricanes are thin at center, but I would expect GM Jim Rutherford would prefer to add a veteran center if the opportunity arose, rather than a still-unproven commodity like Turris.

TSLH: observed former Nashville Predators forward J.P. Dumont remains unsigned as training camp progresses, and suggested perhaps a young team like the NY Islanders, Ottawa Senators, Edmonton Oilers and Phoenix Coyotes could use his experience.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s possible he might land with an NHL team at some point, but the decline in his production in recent years has significantly affected his market value. The Islanders and Oilers appear in good shape on the wings with their young talent, while the Coyotes have Shane Doan, Radim Vrbata, Ray Whitney, Lauri Korpikoski, Raffi Torres, Lee Stempniak and Mikkel Boedker as their wingers. The Senators are thin in offensive depth, so they might be a possibility, but for now intend to stick with their young players.

sorry Spec ..last i checked Stempniak has been a flame for a while

  2. TheGirlOutWest says:

The Flames have Stempniak, been in a couple of games already…..

  3. Sandy says:

The Sens are re-building. 3 young players are fighting for 1 position open at 2nd line centre. The rest of the spots are filled… no need for a veteran at this point.
Sens will go with the youth.. that’s what a re-build means.
