The Edmonton Oilers have acquired goaltender Ben Scrivens from the LA Kings in exchange for a third round pick in 2014.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Oilers GM Craig MacTavish wasting little time to shake things up between the pipes, acquiring Scrivens after shipping Devan Dubnyk to the Nashville Predators.  Looks like they’ve not only got a skilled backup for Ilya Bryzgalov but also perhaps his replacement if Bryzgalov isn’t re-signed after this season.

Scrivens played well in November filling in for the sidelined Jonathan Quick but wound up supplanted by rookie call-up Martin Jones in December. Expect the Kings to recall Jones from the minors.

This could be Scrivens best opportunity to prove himself as a starting goalie. He’s also an unrestricted free agent this summer but if he plays well for the Oilers over the rest of this season he should be an affordable re-signing.

A minor upgrade over Dubnyk. Scrivens will be playing behind a much different team than the strong one from LA….

That sound you hear is every fantasy hockey owner struggling with goaltending depth knocking over their own grandmother to get to their computer and pick up Jones.

oilers are still awful defensively, this will make little difference.

    • Peterman says:

Bingo! Their zone coverage system is killing them

Ehh Scrivens was pretty decent in Toronto, not like its the first time hes played behind bad D. It wouldnt really surprise me if the Oilers went out and picked up another young unproven starter in the off season (ufa) and follow a lot of other teams with a 1a 1b kind of thing. In that situation Scrivens could thrive with 35-45 starts.

This was for the better of Dubnyks career, pretty much just gave up a 3rd rounder for Hendricks and Scrivens. Isn’t going to make the Oilers much better at the moment, but in Scrivens they have a guy who knows the backup role and is happy playing it…. something that can’t be said about many guys. Third rounder is nothing to the oilers, they have so much young talent and are going to have 2 picks in the top 40 anyway. Hometown boy, gotta think the Oilers will be able to resign him for at least a couple.

I expect the Oil will be looking for a new #1 in the off-season? I don’t think Scrivens is it…

  6. LeafsAdvocate says:

One would expect MacT to be a little more creative than this to get a better goaltender. Don’t get me wrong, Scrivens is good, but not what the Oilers need. But then again, the pickings are slim, especially for teams wanting any of Edmonton’s players outside of; Eberle, Hall and RNH. Yaks isn’t proving why he was selected 1st overall, so he probably was getting trade requests, but not to what the Oilers want in return. So this trade, is a ‘beggers can’t be choosers’.
