SPECTOR’S NOTE: Kunitz had one year remaining on his current contract and would’ve been eligible for UFA status next summer. His new deal is worth $3.875 million per season, a slight raise over the $3.75 million per season of his previous deal. Kunitz will turn 34 next season, but odds are he could’ve receive more next summer on the open market. He was willing to take a hometown discount to remain with the Penguins.

Kunitz has been a good fit with the Penguins since joining them midway through the 2008-09 season. This season, his 22 goals and 52 points not only put him among the league’s top scorers, but prorated over 82 games would’ve exceeded his career-best 26 goals and 61 points of 2011-12.

Playing alongside a superstar like Sidney Crosby helps, of course, but Kunitz proved capable of putting up good numbers during Crosby’s lengthy absences to injury in recent years.  Overall, it’s a good, affordable re-signing for the Penguins.
