Rangers Acquire Raphael Diaz

The New York Rangers have acquired defenseman Raphael Diaz from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a fifth round pick.

Raphael Diaz joins the Rangers.

Raphael Diaz joins the Rangers.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Diaz’s tenure with the Canucks was a short one, having been acquired from Montreal earlier in the season. He’s a smooth-skating, puck-moving blueliner. Perhaps he’ll fit on their power-play or fill the void from the Rangers dealing away Michael Del Zotto earlier this season.

  1. kinda sad this is it as far as deals for the Canucks this year, as usual Gillis talks a big game and ends up doing nothing. from what i heard the Luongo deal had been discussed for awhile so it wasn’t as big a surprise as everyone was making it out to be and once again Gillis is accepting whatever garbage Tallon wants to get rid of (Markstrom and Matthias have been underwhelming). whoever Vancouver picks with the 5th round pick they got statistically has about a 10% chance of ever playing a game in the NHL. the Kesler nightmare continues and far from not demanding a trade he apparently told anyone in Sochi who would listen that he was done with Vancouver. even worse than that his agent supposedly told the Canucks he would only waive his no trade clause for Anaheim or Pittsburgh so he backed them into a corner and then started making demands. the current rumor going around is he was largely responsible for Schneider being moved at the draft due to some of his off-ice activities. he has to go and whatever the Canucks eventually get for him won’t be as good as what they were offered today so Gillis should be gone for sitting on his hands, you would’ve thought he’d learned his lesson after what he eventually had to accept for Luongo.

  2. Could be a decent sleeper pick up for the Rangers. As mentioned given ice time and some confidence Diaz could fill a void in the Rangers for a puck moving D man. He’s cheap too so if he does show to be any good the Rangers could opt to re-sign him in the Summer instead of Stralman who is make $500k more and will want a raise on that in the Summer.
