Christensen shipped to Wild.

Various sources report the NY Rangers have dealt forward Erik Christensen to the Minnesota Wild and a seventh round pick in 2013 in exchange for forward Casey Wellman . Wellman will be sent to the Rangers minor league affiliate in Hartford.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: This move sheds the remainder of Christensen’s $925K cap hit from the Rangers payroll. Freeing up an additional bit of wiggle room for later additions? We’ll see. As for the Wild, Christensen will provide additional depth at forward, but not much scoring punch.

Free conditional 7th round picks are awesome. Well done, Fletcher.

Christensen hasn’t fit in the Rangers’ plans this season. The team game is more about grinding in the tough areas. Digging in the corners, battling at the top of the crease, places where you take a beating. Christensen has great hands and a terrific shot, but he’s kind of soft and something of a defensive liability.

It’s interesting, and a little disheartening, that the Whale hasn’t won a game since Avery was tossed from the big club. Maybe a certain amateur in-line hockey team should go heckle him.
