Red Wings sign MacDonald.

The Detroit Red Wings today announced the signing of goaltender Joey MacDonald to a two-year contract. Full details to follow regarding salary….It’s $550K at the NHL level, $105K at the AHL.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t consider this signing as MacDonald taking over the backup role behind Jimmy Howard, as they’re apparently still considering either re-signing Chris Osgood or another UFA, perhaps Ty Conklin, for the backup role.

  1. Hi. First off let me thank you for all the years that I have visited your site. It is one of the best!

My question is in regards to Evengi Nabokov. Last year Wings made an offer only to lose out to NY Islanders. What is his current status?

  2. Nabokov was claimed by the Islanders, who are “tolling” his contract forward to this season. His rights belong to the Islanders this season. It’s believed at some point they’re going to shop him.

  3. @Lyle – Are you hearing anything out there about Detroit trading for Nabokov as an option? I know Hudler has been shopped around recently and they have a plethora of defensemen at the moment.

  4. Haven’t heard it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a possibility. For now, however, it appears Holland wants to speak with Osgood later next week.

  5. I really do not want either of these two (macdonald or osgood) as the back up next year.. mac is solid in grand rapids and i just do see him being able to get it done as a number two goalie in the NHL. Osgood, I love you, but its time for you to retire. Id like to see him join the coaching staff as a goalie coach or something along those lines.. Id like to see them trade for nabokov, but would also be happy if conklin made his return to hockey town, hes always played well as w ing
