Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press and Darren Dreger of TSN report the Winnipeg Jets, less than an hour prior to the expiration of the NHL CBA, have re-signed left wing Evander Kane to a six-year, $31.5 million contract. Kane was a restricted free agent coming off his entry level contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: So much for the baseless, silly trade rumors which dogged Kane throughout the off-season. His new deal breaks down as $5.25 million per season against the salary cap, though that could be reduced under the new CBA. Still, it’s a good signing for both sides. The Jets lock up a key player as they build toward playoff contention (as well as a potential franchise player around which to market their club), while Kane gets a worthwhile raise based upon his accomplishments over the past three seasons.
