Report: Predators to buy out Lebda.

SPORTSNET.CA’s Nick Kypreos reports via Twitter the Nashville Predators have placed recently-acquired defenseman Brett Lebda on waivers as a likely precursor to buying out his contract. Lebda was dealt to the Predators as part of the trade which saw Cody Franson and Matt Lombardi shipped to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The cost of buying out Lebda can be found at this link.

  1. So… it was some no name prospect named Slaney to Nashville for Franson and Lombardi. I think Toronto got the best of that. I bet Nashville is going to get some heat for this.

  2. Oh… and according to Hockey News, it is absolutely a buy-out.

  3. It is the only sensible thing Nashville could do.

They still have to sign 2 defencemen.

    More changes coming??

  4. This is a salary clearing move to free up money for the Suter & Rinne signings. The Preds have a large depth of D-men prospects waiting in Milwaukee. Ryan Ellis, Roman Josi & Mattias Elkholm are all excepted to be competing for spots with the Preds at training camp, along with Teemu Laasko. In addition to those four, the Preds still have Weber, Suter, Kevin Klein, Jon Blum, & Franky Bouillon (post concussion status pending) on the roster.

  5. My hope is that this buyout of Lebda is to free up some more room to add a top 6 forward for this season. With Weber signed, we’re currently under the cap floor. If they spend up to an expected 52M, that leaves about 4M to spend.

  6. Its clear Nashville was looking for a major salary dump, and probably did not want to take Lebda in the first place.

However Burke probably said “I will take those guys off your hands for a prospect (Slaney) and either Komisarek or Lebda”, and Lebda costs a lot less to buyout. I don’t know why Nashville did not try to unload Lebda to someone else for a draft pick or prospect rather than buy him out, but perhaps they did and there were no takers.

  7. I’m not sure they bought him out afterall. Seems some are suggesting he just got sent thru waivers. Color me confused.
