Report: Senators Ship Spezza to Stars.

The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch reports the Ottawa Senators have dealt center Jason Spezza to the Dallas Stars. Details to follow…

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The return is Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill, Nicholas Paul and 2nd round pick in 2015. Ludwig Karlsson is also part of the return from the Senators.

Gotta toot my own horn on this one, as I’ve said for weeks the Stars had the depth in young talent and prospects to entice the Senators, provided Spezza was willing to go to Dallas. Chiasson’s a big right winger who’s only 23 and netted 35 points in 79 points last season.  Guptill and Paul are both prospect left wingers.  It’s a package which can help the Senators now, but more so in the future.

The Stars, of course, are the short-term winners, picking up a second-line center who’ll provide offensive skills, experience and leadership for this young club. He only has one year left on his contract, so how well he fits in there and how well the Stars perform this coming season will determine how long he stays in Dallas.

  1. could this mean Stasny is headed to the Blues? with the Av’s trading Parenteau to the Habs for Brierre you have to wonder, it would definitely be a downgrade for a young Colorado team if that’s the case but i guess they have to focus on resigning Ryan O’Reilly (yet another reminder of the damage wrought by Gillis was his taking Jordan Schroeder instead of O’Reilly despite constantly saying he wanted the team to get bigger … last i heard they were releasing Schroeder outright while Colorado tries to sign O’Reilly for somewhere north of $5 million a year).

  2. Hate this deal, not a fan at all. Like Chiasson, but come on you couldn’t get one top prospect out of Dallas? We are loaded with forward prospects … better be something else brewing here. Anyway, good for Spezza, like Spector I’ve been saying he will land in Dallas, even tweeted it out at the draft.

  3. Soft market for 1 year rental. There was a probably a better deal out there that included signing Spezza to an extension which looks he was not interested in doing

  4. Hemsky follows Spezza to Dallas as well! Had a feeling that was going to happen.
