TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports the Buffalo Sabres have traded defenseman Jordan Leopold to the St. Louis Blues for draft picks.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Details to follow on the draft picks. Leopold is an unrestricted free agent this summer so it’s not surprising the soon-to-be rebuilding Sabres shipped him out. He’s a left-handed shot, just what the Blues have been seeking since the season began, so we can safely put the Jay Bouwmeester to the Blues rumors to bed until this summer.

Jordan Leopold underachieved for the Sabres earlier in the season. Leopold’s exit happened later than sooner, but has finally happened.

The Sabres have acquired a second-round pick from the Blues, a fifth-round pick from the Blues that may be upgraded to fourth-round pick and a fifth-round pick from the Panthers for the 2013 NHL Draft.

Though I do not mind the Sabres acquiring draft picks, they need to acquire some active NHL players to win games and attempt to make postseason play.

Sabres have several defensive players ready to make the transition from Rochester to Buffalo – McNabb, Schiestel, Biega to name a few. We have Erhoff, Meyers, Sekera, Pysyk and Sulzer (who has played well enough for us) and Weber. I think we should either trade Regehr for picks or keep him around as a “mentor” for our youngsters and I think we should try to move Tyler Meyers – let some other team work with his potential because the past two years he has looked horrible. This year, he looks like he has forgotten how to play, maybe he is overthinking, but he either needs to move on or go to Rochester for a stint.

Sulzer, because of his season ending ACL injury and consistency, is one pending UFA I think the Sabres should resign for two years.

I would like to keep Regher around for veteran presence, but I think he is disgruntled in the Sabres organization.

Myers is likely due for a benching. Interim head coach Ron Rolston is not afraid to bench Drew Stafford and Ville Leino, and it will not surprise me when Myers warms the bench in game. If you cannot play the blueline, you do not need to be on the ice.

Its st Louis 2nd and their 5th round pick ( conditional) both in 2013. The condition 5 th moves to a 4th if st Louis make it to the second round of the playoffs.
