Flyers and Blue Jackets talking about Rick Nash?…Blue could stand pat at deadline…Trade rumor roundup from the Ottawa Sun and CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada.

CSNPHILLY.COM: Tim Panaccio reports sources say the Flyers are listening to the Columbus Blue Jackets regarding winger Rick Nash, noting Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson and advisor Craig Patrick were on hand for today’s Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins game. Panaccio speculated if Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier, James van Riemsdyk or goalie Sergei Bobrovsky might be of interest to the Flyers, though he also questioned if Nash is the right fit for the Flyers, given their problems on defense, in goal and on the penalty kill.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If GM Paul Holmgren acquires Nash, it will be a bad move, unless he pulls off some side deals which address their defensive issues as well, like those he made last June to land Ilya Bryzgalov, though that deal doesn’t seem worthwhile at this point.

STLTODAY.COM: Dan O’Neill reports the Blues could stand pat at the trade deadline as injured players, like Andy McDonald, Alex Steen and Matt D’Agostini, return to the lineup.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch lists the potential buyers, sellers and fence sitters, as well as which players could be available.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Just to make this easy, I don’t believe Teemu Selanne or Bobby Ryan will be available as the Ducks have close significant ground in pursuit of a playoff spot. Capitals GM George McPhee said he’s not shopping Mike Knuble. I doubt there’ll be serious interest in Senators blueliners Filip Kuba and Sergei Gonchar.I don’t believe the Maple Leafs will trade Mikhail Grabovski. The Canucks might move Mason Raymond, but not Cory Schneider. The Lightning are reportedly keen to retain Ryan Malone. Can’t see the Sabres moving Ryan Miller.

As for those who could move, I agree Edmonton’s Ales Hemsky and Nikolai Khabibulin are in that category, as well as Minnesota’s Josh Harding. I wouldn’t rule out the Sabres moving Derek Roy. Rick Nash and Jeff Carter could be moved, but I still believe that won’t happen until the off-season.

CBC.CA: On tonight’s Hotstove segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Elliotte Friedman reported the Vancouver Canucks aren’t in the Rick Nash sweepstakes, nor are the Boston Bruins (won’t move Tuukka Rask), while the NY Rangers won’t part with Michael Del Zotto or Ryan McDonagh. Eric Francis reported he’s spoken with several NHL GMs who doubt Nash gets moved by the deadline, noting the Blue Jackets are seeking an impact player, two top prospects and a first round pick. Friedman said the Blue Jackets were trying to push Nash upon the Flyers, and would prefer to move Jeff Carter to the LA Kings, but Francis pointed out the Flyers recent moves indicates they’re more interested in shoring up their defense. Regarding Patrick Kane,  Francis said his agent said he’s happy with the Blackhawks, and the feeling is mutual from management. He’s not available. Francis also reported the Flames haven’t opened contract talks with Olli Jokinen but he won’t be moved. Ditto Oilers center Sam Gagner.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: As I’ve noted throughout the past several days, here and on my THN.com column, there doesn’t appear to be much enthusiasm for Nash at the present time. Doesn’t mean he can’t be moved, but given his salary and the huge asking price,  I still feel it could take the off-season for a deal to be done. Hard to believe, but the Blue Jackets might find it easier to move Carter at the deadline than Nash. Talk of the Blackhawks shopping Kane was downright silly. The Flames are obviously waiting until season’s end before opening talks with Jokinen. Even if they were to miss the playoffs, I still believe they can re-sign him, and will. I also believe the Oilers will re-sign Gagner.

  1. SHARKATTACK says:

Nash will end up in San Jose because Doug Wilson will become tanning buddies with Howson and sell him on some of our prospects after sharing several bottles of booze and pull off a deal this off season :D

  2. SmielmaN says:

It’s weird that there’s so much talk of the Leafs trading Grabovski and Schenn. Grabovski (after watching the game tonight) is one of the only guy who drives to the net and Schenn is still so early in development. A D man doesn’t realize his potential until he’s 25-27 yrs old. Just seems like the Leafs should keep these guys as their core.

That asking price for Nash is laughable. Ha.

  3. Rod says:

How do you explain “I doubt there’ll be serious interest in Senators blueliners Filip Kuba and Sergei Gonchar?” They are both having better seasons than Kubina and one is a UFA also. Would it be based on the asking price or the value?

  4. Two reasons, Rod. For one, the columnist frequently mentioned them as possible trade candidates since last season, yet they’re still with the Senators. Second, I don’t believe the Senators are shopping either guy, thus there won’t be serious interest in them.

  5. Murph says:

So, Howson was ,at the Philly Pittsburgh game.

Is everyone 100% convinced that Pittsburgh has nothing to offer or gain?

  6. Aj says:

Hard to say Murph. No guarantee the Pens are looking at the top end talent off CBJ. Sure they could pull off some big blockbuster involving top end talent like Nash or Carter (Paul Martin, or Jordan Staal come to mind – Would not be happy if they moved the latter), but then I see the Pens making a depth move here. For example someone like Pahlsson. Something also to note is that Umberger was born and raised in Pittsburgh and was someone I remember Shero looking at a few years ago while with the Flyers. He plays a bit of a physical game similar to Kunitz, is 29 still and is making 4.5 this year which would be a more expensive but interesting depth addition who can step in the top 6. Lastly Jared Boll is young, cheap and would be an excellent 3/4th liner. Not saying any of these are happening or may, but if the Jackets are not at the game for the Flyers, this is where I see things.

  7. fergy22 says:

good point by O’Neill , getting players back off IR is a major bonus for any team if the returning players can pick up where they left off. The guys coming back into STL line-up will help big time if they can regain form and stay healthy.

  8. Moleafs says:

Rumour is that leafs are close to acquiring Oduya?? So who’s leaving us?? On D… Crazy world we live in

  9. FireWilson says:

Anyone out there in Leaf land be interested in trading Kessel and Bozak for Nash? The jackets get younger and faster and the Leafs get their coveted big bodied winger on the top line. Salary pretty much works and gives the Leafs the option to re-sign Grabo and possibly center the top line of Nash and Lupul?

  10. LOVEMALKIN says:

Pen’s need to move Paul Martin, after signing Neal to $5 mill for six years, send him Avs to for David Jones, then go after defensive D-man

  11. Killer says:

I agree with FIRE WILSON…..that would be the best deal for BURKE & the leafs…….
MOVE OUT Kessel, for sure for a more physical player upfront (NASH) who scores the same amount of goals………..HOWEVER …. I would also involve Schenn and Bozak..with a prospect such as another marlies defenseman and a Second Round Pick to acquire Ryan Johanson in the same trade…this will take care of another big center down the middle ….Grabovski first line Ryan Johanson Secon line Joe Colborne Down the 3rd line Steckele 4th line….Burke needs to get serious here and move out STUPID contracts for anything….
also why in the world did Burke sign Connolly at 4.75 million and he has Colborne and Kadri at 1million each who could have been better in that spot and grew with the team ……BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!

  12. Phil says:

Couturier, Van Riemsdyk and a second round draft pick for Rick Nash.

It s the best they will get. Nash is not 21.

  13. Poultsy says:

Holmgren already told Howson the price was too steep and they’re not interested in acquiring Nash right now. Apparently the asking price was; JVR, Bobrovsky, Schenn or Couturier, and a 1st round pick.

  14. Moleafs says:

Howsons trying to rob the cookie jar before he gets served his walking papers. Rumour has it if he doesn’t deal Nash he’s out as GM.

  15. Murph says:

I think Howson is out anyway. They will fire him sometime just after the deadline and before the end of the season. Craig Patrick will take over if he is not already running the show behind the scenes.

  16. Moleafs says:

Today a list supposedly came out with Nash’ s teams try are tor, van, nyr,Det and SJ. With van and nyr pulling out due to the asking price and detroits cap this year I have to believe its between tor and. SJ. And apparently Burke and Howson met today in ny. Lol this story just keeps on giving lmao
