The Ottawa Senators have announced the re-signing of defenseman Jared Cowen to a four-year, $12.4million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As reported earlier today by the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, Cowen’s average annual cap hit will be $3.1 million. Seems a fair deal for both sides.
Despite only one full NHL season under his belt (missing all but seven games of last season to injury),Cowen more than doubles his annual salary from his entry level deal ($1.295 million in combined base salary plus bonuses). The Senators, meanwhile, get a big, promising blueliner under contract early in pre-season without overpaying for the privilege.
This deal also avoids another return to the bargaining table in a year or two. This contract could become a bigger bargain if Cowen blossoms as expected.
