Stars ink Whitney.

Whitney goes to Dallas.

The Dallas Stars have made the first truly notable signing of the opening day of NHL free agency, signing former Coyotes winger Ray Whitney to a two-year, $9 million contract, worth an average annual cap hit of $4.5 million.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ordinarily you wouldn’t see a 40-year-old winger getting a two-year deal worth that much per season, but Whitney is no ordinary 40-year-old winger. With 77 points last season with the Coyotes, he remains among the league’s best playmakers, and his skills and leadership should be invaluable to the rebuilding Stars.
