Stars trade Grossman to Flyers.

Grossman dealt to Flyers.

Various sources report the Dallas Stars have traded defenseman Nicklas Grossman to the Philadelphia Flyers for a 2012 2nd round pick and a 2013 3rd round pick.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Grossman is slated for UFA status this summer, so the Stars obviously decided they weren’t going to re-sign him. Depending on how he plays for the Flyers, he’ll likely be a playoff rental for them. He’s no Chris Pronger, obviously, but he’s an experienced blueliner with size (6-4, 230 lbs) who’ll provide veteran depth to the Flyers blueline.

  1. On the Flyers he’ll be a 3rd pairing dman. He regularly plays about 19 mins per night and you can count on him to hit and block shots every game, and he plays the PK on a regular basis. Not flashy by any stretch, but he’s a big sturdy body on the backend. He’s only 27 years old, so this may not be just a rental, especially if the Flyers choose not to resign Carle, in order to free up cap space this summer.

  2. To give up a couple of quality draft picks, I believe Holmgren would have every intention of re-signing Grossman for next season and beyond. Even if he plays 3rd pair minutes + PK time, it bumps Lilja out of the starting 6 and gives both M-A Bourdon and Erik Gustafsson more seasoning time in the AHL. Both are good young defensemen with upside, but need aren’t quite there yet. Matt Carle is a replaceable commodity via the FA market (Ryan Suter… *smirk*)

  3. Moore to SJ for a second.

  4. Smart move by the Stars who have shown they’ve learned from Richards last year. Grossman was a nice piece but ultimately one that will be easily replaceable in the offseason anyway and the pair of draft picks will help bolster the farm system.

  5. I don’t think Holmgren cares about the picks one way or the other. He can go out and add a Matt Read and Harry Zolnierczyk to add prospect depth as undrafted free agents. What the Flyers need is defensive depth – too many breakdowns in front of the goaltenders, although the spotty play hasn’t helped.

  6. Perfect deal for the Flyers IMO. He fills a need for a big physical body who can bolster the PK. Hopefully he can be resigned, he’d be a good addition to Philly.
