The latest from the Ottawa Sun and Boston Globe, plus more updates on Evgeni Nabokov, Niklas Hagman and the Columbus Blue Jackets.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports a big reason the Phoenix Coyotes don’t want to trade Kyle Turris is to avoid the precedent it would set, as teams don’t want to get into the habit of trading players coming off entry level contracts…The Florida Panthers were set to trade center Stephen Weiss at the start of this season but changed their minds after playing a bigger role under head coach Kevin Dineen and becoming a more important player…The Blue Jackets are working the phones and teams have shown interest in forwards Antoine Vermette and Derick Brassard, but their contracts would be tough to absorb. The Senators would be interested in bringing back Vermette but for his contract…Sources claim the Buffalo Sabres were interested in acquiring Patrick Kane but the Chicago Blackhawks aren’t moving him…Evgeni Nabokov could be the odd man out with the Islanders. Sources say he could land in Phoenix.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Can’t say I blame the Coyotes for not wishing to set a precedent with Turris…Weiss won’t be going anywhere, but if the Panthers were to shop him, they’d have limited options as he has a full “no-movement” clause…Another reason Vermette and Brassard might be difficult to move is their respective performances this season. So, they’re on pace for the worst of their careers…Patrick Kane is going to be with the Blackhawks for a very long time…Why would the Coyotes want Nabokov? Mike Smith has been outstanding so far this season, and they’ve got a capable backup in Jason Labarbera.

Blue Jackets interested in Rask?

BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont reports of rumors the struggling Columbus Blue Jackets could have interest in Bruins backup Tuukka Rask for NY Islanders goalie Evgeni Nabokov….Phoenix Coyotes GM Don Maloney continues to insist he won’t be trading Kyle Turris before the December 1st deadline for the young center to be under NHL contract and remain eligible to play this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I doubt the Bruins move Rask, as I think they still see him as an eventual replacement for Tim Thomas…The Turris trade rumors died down big time after Maloney’s statement a week ago on Hockey Night in Canada when he said “under no circumstances” would he consider trading the holdout.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Aaron Portzline reports the ongoing injury woes of Mark Dekanich has Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson acknowledging he’s in trade talks to acquire a goaltender, with Isles goalie Evgeni Nabokov “among the possibilities, according to Portzline. Portzline also tweeted the Blue Jackets would move Derick Brassard for “the right return”, but there’s no sense anything is imminent.

NEWSDAY: Arthur Staple reported last night Islanders GM Garth Snow said he had “nothing imminent” as far as trades go. Staples also “tweeted” Nabokov said he didn’t wish to leave the Islanders if they need him there, and hasn’t been asked by Snow to waive his NTC.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It remains to be seen if the Isles will move Nabokov in the near future. As for the Blue Jackets, one gets the sense they could pull the trigger on a trade for a goalie at some point this week, and Brassard perhaps might be the trade bait. This could be worth keeping an eye on this week.

CALGARY SUN’s Eric Francis yesterday ‘tweeted’ the Flames had placed forward Niklas Hagman on re-entry waivers. Francis doubts he’ll be claimed.

  1. Ranzeir says:

Vermette was a very popular Senator during his stint with Ottawa. Although the team could use some additional depth at centre right now, what team couldn’t, at this stage of his career I’m not sure where he would fit in with a re-building team trying to play and develop younger players. He’s a good skater who can kill penalties and could definitely can help someone.

  2. DLS says:

Scrivens is not ready for a number one role in the NHL. Rebounds galore, the odd soft goal and to much pressure is not a good combination for this young goalie in the blue and white. I will say it again the Leafs need a Vet so Burke, do what needs to be done. If NYI want to dump Naby then lets fill this gapping hole. As for Wilson… Well thats a story for another day after the Leafs go on a huge losing streak. We could easily be 0 and 6 this month if it wasn’t for Mason and Brodeaur gift wapping the those two wins and the hockey gods over looking the shoot out win in St. Louis.

  3. DurtMCHurt says:

    God I’m hung over.

  4. Chem69 says:

Haby or Steve Mason could be a stop gap until Riemer comes back, then one would be a nice backup after that. As for Wilson, he needs to go soon, sitting on a two goal lead vs St Louis, then one goal vs Ottawa, that’s the coach fault period. The leafs should play pedal to the medal for 60 minutes not 20 minutes and then hang on. Wilson must go now.

  5. joey says:

I’d like to see Dallas Eakins and Ron Wilson change places. Let Ronnie and his 600+ wins ride the buses in the minors for awhile and let Eakins give it go up here as he’s great with young players and this team is young as Wilson’s ways are clearly not working.

  6. TopRightCorner says:

If the cost is right by all means get a vet goalie, but not at the price of a good prospect or 2nd rd pick.
lets not start that stop gap stuff again losing value on panic moves, the team is nowhere near a contender yet.
plus you don’t want to go right to the top of the cap and have nothing left for later.
I have to agree Wilson is the big problem.
I was not going to jump on him and gave him lots of room the last couple of years but seeing the same old same old it is the coaching killing us.
Slow starts, bad special teams, players taking turns floating, never a solid 60 minutes and terrible lack of discipline.
Add it up and it is happening again with a whole new set of players from when he started but have shown obvious talent.
There is no doubt now,it is poor coaching.
the real bad part is with a winning record, for now,he will not be replaced anytime soon and if they plummet then could be too late.
I have loved everything Burke has done to turn this team around except for Wilson.
Like a good trade the time to make a move is before the downturn, and it should be with a coach as well.
    Captain Burke,make it so!

  7. andy says:

THIS IS GETTING SICK,BURKE HAS TO PULL THE TRIGGER THE BLUE JACKETS ARE HURTING BIG TIME MASON IS HAVING A BAD YEAR I THINK BURKE SHOULD DEAL FRANSON FROM MASON AND PLEASE FIRE WILSON AND HIS YANKIE STAFF THESE 2 NEW GUYS BURKE BROUGHT IN DON,T HAVE A CLUE THIS IS NOT USA COLLAGE HOCKEY YOU DUMB-ASS THERE PK IS 29TH SO IS THERE PP AND THIS NEW GUYS ARE GOING HELP LOL, WE CAN NOT WIN WITH 2ND AND 3ND STRING GOILIES WAKE UP FOR CHRIST SAKE BURKE..

  8. unclebonk says:

ANDY WHY ARE YOU SO gOD DAMNED ANGRY?!!! IT IS JUST A GAME AND YOU MAY REQUIRE A CHILL PILL DUDE!!!!!

  9. FireWilson says:

From all the posts here and on all the other sites I think everyone agrees the Wilson coaching project is the #1 problem. Unfortunately Kessel and Lupul single handedly got the Leafs off to a good start so their record doesn’t show how bad they really are and Burke would never make a coaching change with their current record. So what does he do? Sit on his hands or make insignificant trades?

I think a new coach and a decent veteran goalie would lead to a playoff birth. Let’s see what it would take to pry Kipper out of Calgary.

  10. Daveyboy says:

@Durt…Being a Leafs Fan is a heavy cross to bear! :-)

  11. Casey says:

    lol @ unclebonk

  12. RaskSeguinAndCounting says:

Why on Earth would the Leafs bring in Mason?? Do you actually think his confidence, (or theirs), would improve on that team??? Burke should have addressed the goaltending situation this summer but instead preached about how deep his club was in all positions. Gustavsson looks about as good as Pogge right now and Scrivens, who has potential if brought along properly, can’t be benefiting from this exposure. As for Leaf fans who assume that Clemmensen should be brought in, why would the Panthers be so eager to send a capable backup to a struggling team that they’ll eventually be competing for a playoff spot with? If I were Tallon, (or any other Eastern G.M.), you’d need to offer me a pretty nice return before I helped out a floundering rival…

  13. Jethro says:

I agree with most statements, wilson has to go(this is a special teams game now) and goaltending needs to be addressed.

the monster is not the answer, should of been given time to learn in the AHL, and now were doing the same with Ben scriviens. marty turco would come cheap, or if ur not gonna use franson flip him for nabokov.

also am i the only one who think matt lombardi is useless, just doesnt seem to have the offence awareness anymore

  14. Joey says:

@Jethro: I’m not sure Lombardi or anybody else on that team for that matter has any awareness of what the hell they should be doing, and where and when they should do it. As long as Wilson stands behind that bench, we can expect more of the same as the November slide along with the pride is heading for the bottom until January when once again, the team wakes up after another trade in the hopes that all these comments will be forgotten in the annual March push to make it look close for the fans that help to establish next years revenue streams.

  15. OctaneLeaf says:

    Go Wilson go…..go Wilson go……..go Franson go…..go Franson go……..hello Mason hello……hello Mason hello……hello Brassard hello….hello Brassard hello……go Gustavsson go…..go Gustavsson go…….

Burke make some deals please and fire Wilson when you get a chance also please…..and thank you.

  16. FireWilson says:

Hopefully Monday will bring some trade rumours other then Turris and Nabokov so we can stop talking about how crap Wilson has been as a head coach for the last 3 years.

  17. DLS says:

I guess that botched Burke trade 2 years ago that was supposed to see Kaberle and our first rounder (Kadri) traded for Kessel isn’t looking so bad now eh? Damn, Seguin with Kessel and Lupul would have looked sweet right now. lol Would of, Could of, Should of.

  18. Poultsy says:

You know the Leafs are struggling again, when 14 of the 17 comments revolve around the Leafs, yet the actual post doesn’t even mention them whatsoever. I’m not complaining, it’s just amusing.

  19. DurtMCHurt says:

I think Brassard + for Rask makes sense. Depending on the plus that is. Rask would be a good pick up for the Jackets.
FYI, sleeping 14 hours is a great way to get rid of a hangover lol!

  20. DurtMCHurt says:

FireWilson, easily the best post! Lmfao!

  21. Robert Esquire says:

I agree that Kane would be a needed offensive addition to the Sabres, but he is another small forward. I’m not sure that is what they need at this time. Better to go after Nash – if this big fish would leave the small pond of Columbus.

  22. HABS_FTW says:

If you were Boston, would you trade Rask? I mean.. who trades a young goalie with his skillset for another goalie?? You would have to be insane to do that …. ;)

  23. Joey says:

@HABS_FTW..you asked who trades a young with his skillset for another goalie? John Ferguson Jr does as that’s how Boston got him in the first place when that moron traded him for Andrew Raycroft in June of 2006

  24. Joey says:

@HABS_FTW..you asked who trades a young goalie with his skillset for another goalie? John Ferguson Jr does as that’s how Boston got him in the first place when that moron traded him for Andrew Raycroft in June of 2006 and we all know how that worked out

  25. Grizzledbear says:

I love those “so and so team would like to add Kane to their team” rumours. In other news, many teams would love to add Ovechkin, Datsyuk and Zetterberg to their rosters too. :D

  26. Questioner says:

Wilson is still around when Hitchcock was available during the summer?

Wayne coming here when, in fact, Walter would be a better ambassador?

Boyce, shafted in camp after a decent year, is still in the minors even with Lombardi injured?

Dave Keon Jr not in the hall of fame under “officials” category?
