The latest on Dion Phaneuf, Ryan Miller, Martin Havlat, Michael Del Zotto, Ales Hemsky, Mikael Backlund and more.

CBC.CA: Glenn Healy reported contract talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and pending free agents Dave Bolland and Jay McClement, while suggesting if Dion Phaneuf “gets his term” he’ll have to accept less money to stay with the Leafs, noting the club’s other free agents to be re-signed…Elliotte Friedman reports the Flames Mikael Backlund could be available, and the club is making moves now to “take the Brian Burke trade freeze” ten days prior to the league-wide freeze of December 19th. He believes there are teams interested in Backlund who’d like to see how he’d do with a fresh start.  He also believes the Flames will wait until the New Year to make plans on which of their pending UFAs they’ll attempt to re-sign…Friedman believes there was “a conversation” between the Ottawa Senators and New York Rangers over Michael Del Zotto but doesn’t think it’s going anywhere. As for the rumors of the Senators pursuing Edmonton’s Ales Hemsky, Friedman doesn’t believe the Senators can afford to do that…Healy noted the Leafs were scouting the Hurricanes to look at defenseman Tim Gleason. He doesn’t believe a Gleason for John-Michael Liles swap might not work without another player in the mix.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Phaneuf and the Leafs will work something out whereby he gets around $7 million per season…Backlund could prove an affordable option for teams in need of depth at forward…Sounds like the Senators are going to stick with their current lineup for now. They could revisit their interest in Del Zotto later in the season. Hemsky’s $5 million salary is simply too much for the budget-conscious Sens…Gleason makes $4 million per season, so the Hurricanes will either have to pick up another salary from the Leafs along with Liles, or eat half of Gleason’s remaining contract to make it work.

Kings interested in Ryan Miller?

Kings interested in Ryan Miller?

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Buffalo Sabres president of hockey ops Pat LaFontaine wants to have a new GM in place before Christmas. That GM will have to decide Ryan Miller’s future. Garrioch claims the LA Kings might have interest in Miller with Jonathan Quick currently sidelined for at least another month. While noting Ben Scrivens has played well, Garrioch says Kings GM Dean Lombardi has been sniffing around. The St. Louis Blues have also been linked to Miller…The Rangers are trying to clear cap space and Michael Del Zotto ($2.55 million) is available. Garrioch claims the “Senators, Hurricanes, Oilers and Sharks” are interested but the Rangers want a defenseman in return. Garrioch believes it’s in the Rangers best interest to move Del Zotto as they need to clear cap space to re-sign their key UFAs…The San Jose Sharks are shopping Martin Havlat. The Rangers and Florida Panthers have “mild interest”…Before acquiring Kris Versteeg, the Chicago Blackhawks apparently explored the possibility of acquiring Rene Bourque from the Montreal Canadiens. Garrioch claims Habs GM Marc Bergevin wants to make a major move but won’t get much for Bourque or Brian Gionta…The Panthers aren’t done dealing. GM Dale Tallon wants to move “ RW Scottie Upshall, LW Tomas Fleischman, RW Brad Boyes, RW Tomas Kopecky, C Marcel Goc and C Shawn Matthias” before the trade deadline…The Flames are shopping Mikael Backlund and Shane O’Brien…The Edmonton Oilers need help everywhere but rival clubs only want their young players in return. Garrioch believes they could get a top pick for Ales Hemsky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings might be sniffing around for possibly another goalie but as long as Scrivens plays well they won’t panic. I don’t see them seriously chasing Miller unless Quick is out much longer (like most of the season) than expected. As long as Jaroslav Halak keeps playing well, the Blues won’t pursue Miller…I believe the Rangers want to move Del Zotto for the right price, but it has nothing to do with re-signing their key UFAs next summer, as Del Zotto is an RFA next summer, so he has no salary carrying over into next season complicating things for the Rangers…I don’t see much interest from anyone in Havlat, given his injury history and $5 million salary for next season…It’s rumored the Canadiens have some interest in Shawn Matthias…If your definition of “top pick” is at best a second rounder, then yes, the Oilers will get a “top pick” for Hemsky.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Rangers aren’t interested in Martin Havlat. He also wondered if the New Jersey Devils might buy out the final seasons of Anton Volchenkov and Bryce Salvador next summer.

CALGARY SUN: Wes Gilbertson reports Flames forward Mikael Backlund acknowledge the recent rumors but insists he’s not seeking a trade.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jonathan Willis examines the potential trade chips Oilers GM Craig MacTavish has to offer up for a top-pairing defenseman, including his 2014 draft picks, prospects like Oscar Klefbom, Ales Hemsky, Marc Arcobello, Nick Schultz, Philip Larsen and Corey Potter. Willis doesn’t see much there to tempt other clubs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unless MacTavis is willing to include one of his good young forwards in the mix, there’s nothing there which will land them a top-pairing defenseman.

  1. Brian Burke has stamped his trade mark on the Flames in a very short period of time .and has many irons in the fire all ready …Ive always liked OBrien as a player …wrong fit for him in Calgary.

..Iam very interested to see how he does long term …I am a firm believer that he got fired because it was the sticking point for Leweicki ….as it was his personla request that if he came to the Leafs Burkie would have to go …as he signed not long after and seem to be the same type of blowhard …the two of them could never have worked together !!!

MILLER …..is the Rick Nash of goalies ….look how that has worked out for the Rangers.
He will be off to Nashville after Rinnes hip ….MRI

    Volchenkov
Not sure why there isnt more interest in Volchnkov…he is a very good shot blocker and tough D man perfect fit for a team looking for a physical D man !

Congrats to Scrivens …go gettem Scrivy ….

    LEAFS
Have to sign Bolland and Mclement …its a must !!
Nice to get this into the press so they can keep asking Dion to take less ….LOL
I think the Kadri trade clock has been started …..tic ….toc …tic…. toc …

    OILERS
Will be lucky to get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for Hemsky at the deadline !!
They need to get serious !!!

    • Lou Jaffe says:

I agree with each of your comments

    • chris says:

wOULD LOVE IF THE hABS MADE A MOVE FOR VOLCHENKOV.

    • Frankanthony says:

Why the hell would the leafs want to trade kadri that organization will never win a cup if they do seriously wake up .. I’m no fan of the leafs but I feel bad for a Canadian team it’s imbaressing longest cup drought … Kadri is the best player they have he hits scores passes he has heart sure he takes bad penaltys but he’s young it happens he reminds me of evander Kane … If they want to trade him I’m all for him to come to the habs … The honest truth is the leafs need to get rid of clarkson he is not worth the money sorry guys also do not sign phanef for that money 7 million a couple years ago you couldn’t get rid of him even if you tried all of a sudden he’s a hero asking 7 million come on wake up he hasn’t even won a Norris trophy give him the booth and get something good in return …. Torontos D will be ok with Gardner and Reilly good drafting … They should trade phanef and get draft picks and a young good dman to add like kulikov and floridas 1st pick … What do you think it would take to get kadri out of Toronto since the clocks ticking lol would say Rennee bourque and a 1st round pick do the job

      • Shticky says:

I doubt Kadr goes anywhere besides maybe the wing…lol

        • I wouldnt be so sure about that !!

          • Shticky says:

Unless him and say Gardiner were packaged somehow (maybe with a pick) for a true number 1 C, he wont be going anywhere. Problem with that is most deals the Leafs will have to make need to be dollar for dollar not many true number 1 centers making under 5 mill a year. Not impossible but also not likely.

    • JonB says:

Brian Burke was a great GM and set Nonis up to succeed but was fired because he didn’t get along with the new Bell/Rogers ownership. Nonis is more of a company man and he has done a great job so far.

Bolland and McClement need to be signed and this needs to be a priority for the Leafs. I would think Bozak would be more likely traded then Kadri as Kadri is better and being still young has more upside.

The leafs don’t have a true #1 center but they have a nice mix of centers now. They need another top 2-3 shut down defensmen and I would trade Bozak and gardiner to get one.

The Oilers will not get more then a 3rd rounder for Hemsky and they will not improve without giving up one of those young players they continue to say they will keep.

Miller in Nashville for the rest of the year makes sense to me.

Ottawa is to cheap with their owner to improve. I see them doing something dumb like fireing their coach if they don’t improve. Too bad you can fire the owners.

  2. Shticky says:

Agreed Miller to Nashville could make sense if Renne is done for most the year.

    • I just can not see either Ducks or Kings getting in on Miller as it has become very evident he wants to go south ! Kings are cap strapped and Hiller has be FANTASTIC this year as the Ducks have a cup shot this Summer !

      • Shticky says:

Speaking of fragile goalies Lehtonen in Dallas is a team that need good goaltending if they want to get back in to the race (Dan Ellis is good back up for maybe 10-12 game in a year) and Lindy is there so I could see this making a bit of sense as well.

  3. derek plastow says:

I know this is not a blockbuster by any means but if sj is looking to get rid of havlat and edmonton is looking to get rid of hemskey I belive they have matching 5 mil contracts that are both up at the end of the year I dont think it could hurt either team and it could very well be a push both players need as they both have talent and skill to put up pojnts but they just might need some new team mate and rink to play in as I Nt see either player bringing back what each team needs

    • I posted that 3 days ago to be a good idea maybe even add in an extra player on both side to make it better longer term as well …one team needs to add some youth and the other an older veteran guy !

      • 49GiantSharkWarriors says:

Havlat has another year on his contract though. Sharks would add a pick to get rid of his 2014 cap hit

  4. Michael says:

Burke held on to his long time friend Wilson. Wilson was the wrong fit in Toronto and Burkes style of play. and our PK was brutal under Wilson. Burke overall did a gd job but I like Nonis better. I would love to get a center to replace Kadri and move Kadri to the wing. If you can move Kadri for a Yandle or a 1st line Dman to play with Phaneuf go ahead. Biggs Kadri’ Gardiner, and a 1st how close would toronto be to getting Weber if he were available lol, Just wondering. Know it wouldnt happen lol and we would have to dump more salary, maybe add gunnerson. If Weber was available what would it cost from a LEAFS point of view or other teams such as Oilers and Philly, looking forward to responses

    • Lou Jaffe says:

Agreed but I would not include the first. You have given them two starters and a prospect. That should be enough.

      • Michael says:

Would you give up all of that minus the 1st and go after Weber or give up less and go after a player like Yandle LOU JAFFE. I think if we got a quality #1 Dman we could win a couple rounds in the playoffs. and you never know with the west beating up the west

        • If Iam the leafs I go after Zach Bogosian …….for two reasons …

#1) he will be that shut down guy BIGTIME and can play all roles !!

#2) a trade with the leafs will be in favor of the fan base as most Jets fans were or are Leaf fans before getting the Jets back so that could be a good trade partner on many fronts !!

    • Michael says:

sorry this post was in response to Back checking first post didn’t mean to get off topic,

      • @ Michael

I fiormly believe that its in the Preds best interest to keep Weber to help mentor Jones and for insurance as Pekka Rinnes career could be in danger !!

I belive that Weber is almost untouchable unless you get thre top 3 poistions back 1st line player top 2 defender…and a 1A goalie …so to answer your question Id think to get Weber Leafs would have to give up AT LEAST ….
        1) Reimer
        2) Kadri
        3) Gardiner OR Phaneuf

Thats what it would take or more !

        • Michael says:

Thanks for your comment, i would seriously consider Riemer Kadri and Gardiner. I think you are right tho he isnt going anywhere. But i dont wanna trade Riemer at this point, maybe at deadline if they are comitted with Bernier and Rielly is playing gd and Bolland is healthy and Holland is playing solid

          • @ Michael and Shticky

Iam NOT a fan of moving Reimer ..Id keep him in a leaf uniform and sign him for 3 – 4 years at $ 4 million and then try and resign Bernier in 2 years for $6 million for 4 years and this gives you a gap to make a move then.

          • Shticky says:

Im not a fan of trying to get Webber, as I said the Preds would be looking at a JVR plus a first and a good roster player or 2 besides that to even think about that deal, imo.

        • Shticky says:

Plus a first round pick at the very least

          • Shticky says:

And it would be Phaneuf not Gardiner
Honestly I think you would be looking at JVR Reimer Gardiner and a first very least.

    • Shticky says:

Its probably not enough. I imagine the Preds would be more interested in first round picks at anyrate your stripping a team of most its assets for 1 player who has a giant contract…not worth it imo setting back 4-5 years of development and probably 23 mill tied up in 3 players nearly 30 if you include Clarkson. Kiss Reimer Franson Bolland good bye as well as any other tweeking of the roster to improve the club.

      • Kurt says:

I would be after Klein and not Weber from Nashville. Weber is a pipe dream anyway. I see Klein as an underrated Girardi. Top 4 right handed shutdown D with a great salary. This would fit our cap very well.
Will also be very curious to see who plays between JVR and Kessel at the Olympics. Backes? Well we would not get him either. Stastny? Big possibility. UFA next year. I hope Nonis would pay attention as well.

        • Shticky says:

Ive been saying for a year now Backes is just about the perfect compliment to that line will be interesting to see that line whoever out of the 2 is the center if its together in the olympics.

        • Michael says:

that is a really gd point kurt, will be interesting

      • Michael says:

Gardiner and Kadri are due for a raise over the next two years, Gunner would be replaced by Weber. Gardiner would be replaced by Rielly. We would be saving money? Those three players cap hit is just under 7 million with raises coming. And Weber is in his prime and one of if not the best dman in leaugue right now. And Biggs will never be anything except a career ahler, Levio will be a top 6 nhl forward. and if we had Weber and with all our D prospects maybe we could kiss Franson gd bye. Bolland can be resigned and sign ott/roy to play in top 6 on short term to replace Kadri and keep drafting Centerman and hopefully Gathier developes 3 years down the road

        • Shticky says:

Did you look into a crystal ball? Biggs hasnt even spent half a season on the Marlies yet (and only 1 in the ohl power forwards take time to develop) plus you would be looking at atleast a first round pick (and Im still not sure that would be enough for Webber like I said Im sure the Preds if they were to move him would be looking for more first round picks less players). Then there is who replaceces Kadri ,Reilly and Franson in those spots? Little early to be saying Holland is as good and Levio is a winger, what happens if someone gets hurt?…this move makes no sense if you were to make moves you could find cheaper options by dealing 1 or 2 pieces with out blowing up the team in 1 major deal

  5. Shticky says:

This whole Liles for Gleason idea no matter if the contracts balance out seems like a bad idea to me. Keep Liles to the deadline if you cant get rid of him by then with out holding on to more than a million buy him out. Armstrong Tucker and the retained salary of Frattin and Scrivens comes off the books next year, (2.5 mill on the cap right now) there would only be 1 year (year 2 is 2.2mill) where it is over 2 mill which is still cheaper than what they are carrying now and the other 3 years its around a mill or less. Gleasons contract is 4 mill for 2 more years and he too is currently scratched most nights.

  6. bob says:

OIlers need to trade 2 of 4 “big guns” if they want to be succesfull in this era. They need guts, leadership from hall and hopkins, others Eberle, yak have to be traded.

  7. Paddy says:

This isn’t the first I’ve heard Gionta’s name bandied about in rumours. He has a no-trade clause! Not to say he would never be traded, but it would certainly be a lot harder than just trading him somewhere.

That said, I can see him as a fit in Columbus, which needs leadership. But I think they’d wait till he was a UFA.

    • Thats why I was saying back to New Jersey in the Candian Corner !

      • Paddy says:

That’s a good call, too! Though I think that, provided the Habs are in a playoff position come the trade deadline, they’ll keep Gionta for the playoffs and let him walk after the season.

        • Bergevin really wants to make a deal ….

          • Paddy says:

The thing is, I can’t figure out what Bergevin would be looking to get. Size? Bourque’s actually pretty big. So, size & meanness? Guys like Lucic don’t grow on trees. So, give up talent for size? They’re already struggling to sore.

I can’t think of who Gionta or Bourque would get you that would also be a big, mean top 6 winger (or what they’d have to also give up to get that winger)

Matthias might be good – in a 4th-line role. But not what the Habs need if they give up a top-6 winger to get him (even if the top-6 winger isn’t that great)

  8. bob says:

trade eberle+hemsky+smyth for simmonds luke shenn, brayden schenn, mcginn, 4th rounder

    • Kyle says:

Do you even watch hockey, bro? LOL If Eberle is leaving Edmonton there will be a LONG line of offers. And they would all include a number one or two dman. Keith Yandle, maybe? Make it Gagner instead of Eberle and you might be on to something.

  9. Michael says:

Gardiner and Kadri are due for a raise over the next two years, Gunner would be replaced by Weber. Gardiner would be replaced by Rielly. We would be saving money? Those three players cap hit is just under 7 million with raises coming. And Weber is in his prime and one of if not the best dman in leaugue right now. Bolland can be resigned and sign ott/roy to play in top 6 on short term to replace Kadri and keep drafting Centerman and hopefully Gathier developes 3 years down the road

  10. Kyle says:

Disappointed that my team, the Senators, have become a “budget team.” Much smaller markets with much smaller fan bases are spending to the cap. Being one of the few with a significant amount of room under the cap it is the perfect opportunity to the Sens to make deals that others can’t.

    • Stormcrow666 says:

Low balling Alfredsson because they are a budget team hurt them and was a dumb decision. The Sens cannot add anything except through the draft which will hurt them short term but will be better longterm. That being said there are some good prospects for the Sens and the future should be good for that team :)

  11. bigdoc 58 says:

Phaneuf is not even worth 5 million these days.If you’ve watched him play this year,he started out great. Now he’s back to his old one hand on the stick stand around pylon self.He doesn’t hit enough nor score enough to command the kind of money he wants. If I were GM I’d trade him and save the money. Then I’d long term JVR and when the time comes go hard for P.K. Subban in a year and a half.

  12. BIG DOC 58

Iam not a Dion HATER by any means …and I really loved the trade when it was done ….BUT …after having watched him and his tendencies for the last 4 years Ive seen enough to know that he has plateaued and there will be no more upside in this system ….can`t hit the net if his life depended on it and his shot over the net off the glass ALWAYS creates odd man rushes and NO REBOUNDS for secondary chances in the crease WHICH IS WHAT IS SUPPOSE TO HAPPEN !!

At $ 6 or 7 million for term ……Iam out on that deal!!!!!!….If the big physical defenseman is in such HIGH demand right now by half the league ….there has to be a deal out there that can work somehow , well before the deadline !

I just dont see him as the NUMBER 1 guy long term …just dont see it !!!

On another issue …is it me or are the Leafs starting to play Ron Wilson hockey again but just talk about defensive hockey…. …cause it sure looks like it to me !!!

Randy Carlyle is making the biggest mistake right now …..and thats shortening his bench in the 3rd period with 6 guys who have fresh legs and can really play the game …its digusting to watch and the REAL REASON why the leafs are getting beat in the 3rd periods and have a hard time holding the lead
They have a deep talented team on this roster and in the Marlies and should use guys in more minute roles and play tougher through 60 minutes instead of overplaying guys who are overrated and not up to the minutes !!

    IMO

    • Shticky says:

Ummm pretty sure “Ron Wilson hockey” produced shots on goal for 1 and again with the Dion hate just stop already. Hes a plus player playing the best competition in the world for 25-30 mins a night he is going to be on the ice when the other team scores its just a fact.
Quit listening to the tools on hockey night in Canada. Watch some other games teams score when Webber, Chara Doughty and others are on the ice aswell.

      • Ummmm ….Carlyle is playing loosy goosey just the same ….and only hoping to take advantage of 1 opportunity just like Wilson get it to the top guy and let him have it !!
        Same as Wilson !!

So Shticky …for the record …you all good woth Dion at $6 plus million for 6 – 7 years with his style of play long term ….just curious ….its not about hating its about time… term… and money and positional needs !!

I dont listen to anyone …I have my own ideas as you can see and as Iam told DAILY ….LOL

  13. Zapp Brannigan says:

Why does this guy hate Ales Hemsky so much? He never has one good thing to say about him. And I’ve read a lot. I mean, Hemsky could be putting up better numbers, but, is his game that bad? Curious?

    • Shticky says:

Ive never heard anyone except Oiler management say much good about Hemsky or his contract over the past few years.

  14. Zapp Brannigan says:

Why does this guy hate Ales Hemsky? I don’t think I’ve read where he has said one good word about him? And I’ve read a lot of these. I mean Hemsky could be putting up better numbers? But, is his game that bad? Curious?

  15. Zapp Brannigan

Id say this is the reason why !

He has averaged less than 30 PTS per season for 8 years now and making way to much money for his efforts !!

Skilled player just doesnt produce or is any good in a clutch ! And constantly hurt !

    • Mawman says:

His PPG puts him at 40 to 50 pts per game. Similar to players like Plekanec, Hudler, Grabovski, Erat, etc. All players paid a similar amount. Yes he has been hurt but part of that is because he isn’t a soft player like people who don’t watch him play think he is. Oiler fans aren’t screaming for him to be traded. He is a good third line player who can step up and play on the 2nd line when there are injuries. And based on what are you saying he isn’t a clutch player? He scored big goals in the ’06 Cup run and they often go to him in the shoot-out over their young guns.
WhY trade him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick? That doesn’t make the team better right now. There is nobody in the minors who can do what he does. We need size but not many teams are offering up big players who can play on the top 2 lines.

  16. Leafs24/7 says:

Dion is fine as a 2nd pairing at 20min per game but most people agree he is not a number one guy most nights. He will demand $7M+ on a long term deal as a UFA and all I can say to that is these five words; Grabovski, Lyles, Komisarek, Bozak, and Connelly.

  17. DChamp says:

so many rumours so little action

  18. bigdoc 58 says:

To end on Phaneuf,I did a little research and imo these are some of the players who make less than Dion now but are worth more…Subban ,Seabrook, Keith, Kronwall, Karlsson, Staal, Ekman Larsson,,Pietrangelo. There are others as well.

  19. oilerman53 says:

Every single Edmonton rumor has one of the young guns going off in any trade. Yak, Ebs, Nuge or Hall, I dont believe this to be true, Gagner has been outplayed by Arcobello. Hemsky will be a rental player if the Oilers are out of the mix at the deadline and could net a top pick for a team looking for extra offensive punch. If the Panthers and Oilers are willing to deal then it will be Gagner going the other way with Matthias and possibly a dman coming back.
