The latest from CBC, the Ottawa Sun and the Boston Globe. Enjoy!

Could the Sabres shop Ryan Miller at the trade deadline?

Could the Sabres shop Ryan Miller at the trade deadline?

CBC.CA: In their second intermission “Hotstove” segment, Ron MacLean claimed one rumor had the Minnesota Wild’s Matt Cullen was “a possible trade”. MacLean also wondered if Brian Campbell and Tomas Fleischmann of the Florida Panthers might be available…Elliotte Friedman listed Detroit and LA are believed interested in Calgary’s Jay Bouwmeester, while Kevin Weekes suggested the Tampa Bay Lightning could be interested. Friedman also believes the Flames and Maple Leafs talked about Miikka Kipusoff, but the Leafs won’t part with a first round pick.  He also believes the Vancouver Canucks want a second line center for Roberto Luongo, while Glenn Healy believes they also need a goalie back…Friedman suggests Tampa Bay could be a wild card for goalies…Friedman also reports Phoenix’s Raffi Torres is available and the Canucks might want to take him back. Derek Morris is also available. If Senators were interested in moving Ben Bishop, which they may not be, the Coyotes might be interested.  He doubts Ales Hemsky to Boston is going to happen, and also suggests Buffalo is a wild card heading into the trade deadline, but Healy believes if they want to move a key player like Ryan Miller, it’ll happen in the summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Matt Cullen trade rumor refuses to die, but Wild GM Chuck Fletcher made it very plain earlier this month Cullen and Niklas Backstrom won’t be traded…Fleischman would be easier to move than Campbell, who’s carrying a huge salary which GM Dale Tallon said he won’t absorb any part of to facilitate a trade…Doesn’t sound like the Red Wings are willing to deal for Bouwmeester because of his $6.68 million salary for next season. If the Lightning are interested, they’ll have to dump salary. They’ve got over $62 million invested in 21 players for next season, and the salary cap is dropping to $64.3 million. Same goes for any deal for a goalie…I understand why Leafs management wants an experienced netminder, but James Reimer and Ben Scrivens are getting the job done. I say stick with the kids for now and see how well they do in the post-season. Yes, I believe the Leafs will make the playoffs…The Canucks need second line scoring depth, not a physical checking line winger like Torres…The Senators aren’t moving Ben Bishop…I also doubt Ales Hemsky goes to Boston. With a lengthy injury history, lack of physicality, and  another year at $5 million left on his contract, Hemsky isn’t a good fit for the Bruins…I agree with Healy about Ryan Miller. Moving him could happen in the summer, when there are more teams likely to be interested in him.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports San Jose Sharks winger Ryane Clowe remains in high demand but there’s no guarantees he gets dealt at the deadline. He has the grit the  Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Senators, Bruins, Canucks, Blues and Blackhawks could use down the stretch…Garrioch also claims the Lightning could have interest in Ryan Miller but he might prefer being dealt to a west coast team. He also reports the Sabres haven’t ruled out a contract extension for Robyn Regehr, while Drew Stafford is the player GM Darcy Regier would most like to move…If the Islanders haven’t re-signed Mark Streit by the trade deadline there’s a “good chance” he’ll be moved…The Rangers and Flyers have shown interest in Dan Boyle. Garrioch believes if Boyle is dealt, he’d prefer going to the Rangers as they’re in a position to make the playoffs and may be willing to pay the price…There hasn’t been any contract talks between the Red Wings and goalie Jimmy Howard over the past ten days. Howard won’t be dealt but Garrioch suggests it’s not a certainty he’ll return with the Wings next season…He also touched on the Leafs supposed interest in Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo and Calgary’s Miikka Kipusoff…Keep an eye on Flames winger Curtis Glencross. He’s a player the Senators and several teams seeking forward depth covet.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A report out of San Jose last night suggested Clowe could be moved as early as today. We’ll see…I expect the Sabres will shop Regehr. They’ll also try to move Stafford, but the remaining two years and $8 million left on his contract is a stumbling block…I don’t believe the Isles will move Streit if he’s still unsigned by the deadline. A recent report claimed talks between the two sides are progressing well, and I think they’ll get him signed, even if it comes after the trade deadline. He wants to stay, they want to keep him. I believe a new deal gets done…As long as the Sharks remain in playoff contention, I don’t see them moving Boyle, who remains their best defenseman…The Wings will get Howard re-signed before July 5th, when the UFA market opens…Not sure the Flames want to move Glencross, who’s a heart and soul player with two more years (and a no-movement clause) on his contract.

BOSTON GLOBE: Kevin Paul Dupont suggests the best fix for the Bruins sputtering offense could be a good puck-moving defenseman, like Florida’s Brian Campbell, San Jose’s Dan Boyle and the Islanders Mark Streit.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Campbell and Boyle have expensive salaries (Campbell’s for a much longer period) and no-movement clauses. Streit, as I noted above, is in the midst of contract talks with the Islanders and I believe he will re-sign in the near future. The Bruins will have to look elsewhere.

  1. Hope the leafs do not give up there first for a rental Player. I think luongo to Tampa makes the most sense, if van is willing to take back lecalvier. 2 good players with bad contracts, and addresses what both teams need.

    • Luongo to NYI makes the most sense of any teams that would take that contract. I just don’t see a benefit for leafs or Florida to trading for him. His contract is way to much and both teams have goalies who’s playing time would decrease if you bring him in.
Prices for players have to come down. Doesn’t make sense why someone would pay so much for clowe who is terrible this year.
Leafs could still move, Connolly, komisarek, maca and Liles. Gardiner has to play, watch Thea game last night and both koska and Liles were turning the puck over just as much. There is just to much upside to Gardiner to not let him play and learn.
Should be a busy coup,e of days though.

      • WHY would Luongo waive his NO TRADE to go to New York out of any and all options ……..really guys?????
He can just stay where he is ….hes not getting ridiculed by anyone …if anything its made it harder for the team and or fanbase to let him go ….hes not going to the Islanders ????

        • That’s fine if luongo can stick it out n Vancouver for the next 9 years, good. I’m just saying for all the teams NYI is the only one who makes sense. They have both young forwards and cap space. They will also be without a goalie next year.

          • Nabokov will be resigned and NYI have 2 promising young goalies in the farm system with one already up as backup to Nabokov.
No more silly contracts on Long Island after Dipietro debacle.

  2. Clowe has been hurt a lot …..a 1 st rounder is tough to part with for him especially if he cant help out 100% this year going into the playoffs due to injury….hes a good picl up but thats testy for what yo would have to give up !!! Id takle Torres instead faster hits more and scores more…much more talent!
Id love to see him on the Leafs!

With the no signing of Jimmy Howard Id say that there is huge speculation that detroit might be looking at a major deal in net !! Howard has been solid over the years after taking over for Osgood … is wierd that he has not signed ??? MILLER ?????

Lots of rumblings in Chicago …they are looking at making multiple deals if they can !!

Leafs have a long break here now ….if they were to make a deal id say it happens sooner than later so they can get the players they want into town and practice a couple days!
Have a feeling that Jake Gardiner is trade bait ….Rielly looks real good in the Marlies lineup !!!
Jake Gardiner for Gagne may be the deal !!!! Gardiner played with Shultz over the years !!

If I was a team Id be all over Thomas Flieshman and see what his asking price is the Caps have not been the same since his departure!

It would make no sense for Tampa to trade for a Goalie now better off in the summer !
I think that if they do Luongo would be the deal as I think that with Bruian Burke back in Anaheim in a cpacity he will lobby to try and get Miller for Hiller and a piece going the other way !!……. I M O ….

    • Lots of rumblings in Chicago? Please elaborate as I have heard nothing!

        • Here’s a quick rumor fix based on tips from four sources over the last 24 hours. Lots going on.

Hawk talent guy Pierre Gauthier was in Montreal last night, scouting the Habs and Rangers, and he has been in Montreal quite a bit recently.

The Hawks are allegedly scouting both clubs: Brian Boyle with the Rangers, Alexei Emelin and Lars Eller with the Habs.

The asking price for Ryan Clowe of San Jose includes a #1 pick and that will likely be too rich for the Hawks’ blood.

Numerous reports have the Hawks contacting Dallas, and I am told they’ve inquired about both Jaromir Jagr and Derek Roy. Not surprisingly, the price for each is high: a rostered player, a prospect and a draft pick.

I also heard that the rumor reported in the Daily Herald of the Hawks’ interest in Islander center Franz Nielsen is valid.

Interestingly, although the Hawks go seven deep currently on defense, numerous rumors from multiple sources have them inquiring about defensemen: Keith Aulie of Tampa, Emelin, Robin Regehr, Raphael Diaz of Montreal, and now Grant Clitsome of Winnipeg.

The Hawks had some interest in Clitsome last year at this time.

It’s hard to be sure what trading for another defenseman would mean—beyond the possibility that the Hawks might like to move one of their present defensemen.

I continue also to hear that winger Viktor Stalberg is Candidate 1A to be moved by the Hawks due to slow or stalled talks on a contract extension. And Stalberg is drawing considerable interest from other teams.

I was also told by a source close to the Hawks that Jeremy Morin has been called up to see if he can essentially take Stalberg’s place on the roster the rest of the season.

Finally, I was told this morning that the injuries to Patrick Sharp and Marian Hossa are not serious and if the playoffs were today, both would be playing. The team is being extra-cautious with their recoveries.

          • P. S. …….THESE ARE NOT MY SOURCES ….jusat an article I read!

          • Awesome, thanks for the link. I will keep an eye on that site.

          • Thought it was you for a sec, since you love to throw out stupid trade ideas

          • That Hawk interest in NYI players also included Mark Streit along with Nielsen, would be interesting what the asking price would be for both packaged?
Both NYI players are going nowhere by the way….

    • I can see Miller going to Anaheim, but moreso to the Sharks. To me there is something up with Clowe as either he has been hurt or his skills are in decline. If he’s been playing hurt, then why is he still banging bodies? I like the way Stafford has played the last couple of games (since his healthy benching) and he has some chemistry with Leino and Ennis. Stafford has talent, he just needs a Ken Hitchcock type of coach to get the most out of him.

    • the blackhawks making a major shake-up like that seems like a big mistake. they’ve got a great team and don’t need to do anything drastic. add a little depth as insurance and ride the horse that got you there, that’s what i say.

  3. Derrick Morris is under contract for next season, and has played admirable this season. He may be available, but it would take an overpayment for a team to acquire him. Other impeding UFAs, like Torres, may also be available from the Coyotes.

  4. Why is their no interest in a forward like Clarke McAurther…he’s gritty and has a scoring touch?

    • Gritty? Maybe a bit grainy.

  5. The Canucks could use a 3/4th line winger. Their record is flattering to be honest as they can’t score and defense has been lacking and effort is questionable in multiple games this year. However all that being said If they don’t add scoring at the deadline , I can’t see them beating Minny for the division.

  6. MacArthur gritty?

    • LOL. I was thinking the same thing gritty as satin sheets…

  7. Ron MacLean is making rumors. Campbell is staying same for Fleischmann. Both are Tallon guys and both have done everything he has asked them to do. Scottie Upshall on the other hand might be available.

    • The panthers are up for sale ….Tallon wants to move out fringe players with medium to bigger contracts to make room for entry level contract players and draft picks in his process of the next phase of his rebuild …he can get draft picks and players for both those guys and clear significant cap spaceat the same time …….sometimes its more business than it is personal !!

      Dont forget that !!

  8. Kaberle clears Waivers ……can be sent down to the minors now if need be to clear a roster spot!

Habs looking to make a significant move ????

    • Doesn’t have to be a significant move just because he cleared up the 7th Dman spot lol
could be just a depth move to add something before the tradeline for some added insurance.

  9. Toronto needs to address GUNNERSON`s flaws that goes undetected. He is constantly turning over pucks at a critical times. He is also very shaky and clueless in zone coverage. He will cost couple of playoff games that i am sure of. Nonis needs to get rid of this guy. I think you can fetch an early second rounder for him, as a lot of people think he is a reliable defenseman. Let GARDINER take his place. You will upgrade in that position and at the same time save some money, and stock up on draft pick.

    • Gardiner is making just as many or more blunders in the defensive zone.

  10. Coyotes would be stupid to trade Morris and Torres !! If anyone has watched coyotes games YAndle is the one that should be trade and would bring in good return , he is a good play but is very sloppy at time like I throw the pick to the other team in front of his own net ALOT !! There has been a lot of games coyotes have lost because of him !! Trade yandle and get a good forward , Morris is a leader and Torres I’d the energy don’t part with either

  11. no way LA is chasing Bouwmeester. I’m sure they’d like to add to their blueline but they don’t have the capspace to keep him next year and don’t have the first round pick i’m sure the flames are asking for.

  12. Ooops I guess I jinxed Crosby and the Pen’s when I said hopefully he can stay healthy after the Iginla trade. lol

Broken jaw…Isn’t that 6 weeks then he will drop 15lbs from eating through a straw. Tough luck.

    • Pretty sure players have played with a broken jaw before. He will take some time off seeing the pens are tearin the east apart, but I doubt he’s out 6 weeks

      • Maybe a month…back and ready to go for the playoffs might be good for the team to go thru some adversity early on jell them together so to speak…

    • Does that mean Iginla wants to go to Boston now.

    • The Pens better do something this year. They have a nightmare unfolding with cap space next year. Before the recent signings they only had just over 10mil to sign 10 players and 2 of them are Malkin and Letang. ouch!

      • A nightmare unfolding with cap space next year? Malkin and Letang are signed for through 2013-2014. The Pens have over 11mil to resign players like Kennedy, Cooke, Jeffrey, Adams, Eaton, Bortuzzo…. the only guy who maybe earns a hefty raise is Dupuis!
Iginla, Morrow and Murray are rental players! Maybe Shero can manage to resign some of them if they take paycuts and let some of the other guys go!
For 2014-2015 it looks a lot different! But I think Malkin will resign for the same money as Crosby did. The main problem will be to cap space to resign Letang. But may be the Cap raises till then! And I don’t think they will trade Letang! Martin would have to go first!

  13. The Leafs have a couple of days to practice. I see Gardiner back in the lineup by Thursday and he will make better decisions. A talented young player who’s learning his trade – he’s not going anywhere on trade deadline day.

    • Hope so and hopefully plays well enough to stick the guys got a tonne of potential but with the mental lapses…I’m not sure Carlisle has as much patience as Gardner has potential

  14. I don’t understand the Cullen rumors. The Wild are a playoff team and leading their division. Cullen is a big part of that team right now (4th in team scoring.) The Wild made those big acquisitions in the offseason to get to the playoffs they are not going to trade Backstrom or Cullen unless its for an upgrade and I can’t see any team trading a better player for a UFA to be.

As for the Leafs. I would rather them not trade for Luongo or Kipper. I would like them to see how the kids do and let them grow. This is going to be their first trip back into the playoffs and I don’t see them as a cup favorite even with a top notch goalie. Let the team as a whole get the experience and continue with the rebuild. I think Gardiner should have been left on the Marlies. The guy had a concussion and it normally takes a good while to get fully back into things when you come back from one of those and I don’t know if he’s there yet. I could be wrong. He may just need to adapt again to the NHL speed he has only played 7 games so far. Gunnarson has one of the higher plus minuses on the team so even with the occasional mishap he is not as bad as people think. Let the team play this year and go from there.

  15. I think one reason Gardiner has been sitting in the Press Box is I think something is up regarding Liles. I think they are trying to give him some exposure as a trade piece. Liles, Gardiner and Morgan Reilly are all similar style players. No way they will have room for three of them on a Randy Carlyle roster. One of them has to go, and I think it will be Liles or Gardiner. Leafs would probably prefer to move Liles, but Gardiner would be easier and get a higher return. The same thinking could apply to Gunnarsson (trade piece), although I think he is the best guy to cover / play with Phaneuf on the current roster.

  16. Actually Luongo to the NYI makes absolutely no sense. My gut tells me he will be Florida bound as both Clemmonson or Theodore aren’t playing well at all and Markstrom not experienced enough to take over
the reins yet. I see Luongo to Florida for Matthias and Clemmonson, maybe a second rounder. I would
like to add Raymond and our second overall pick just to get their First as well. And whats up with Jensen
being moved up? Is he being showcased? Luongo and Jensen to the Panthers for Clemmonson, Florida’s
first and Matthias? I wonder if they would do that? I would love to see Seth Jones in a canucks Uniform.

    • under the new draft rules for next year, finishing 30th is not a guarantee of the first overall pick anymore .

  17. I would swear Garrioch gets his stuff from HockeyBuzz.

  18. I would offer GARDINER, MACARTHUR, 1st rounder for Thomas VANEK. Toronto needs THomas VANEK if they want to go through BOSTON in the playoffs. KESSEL BOZAK VANEK not bad of a line. followed by KULEMIN KADRI LUPUL These two lines will send chills down BOSTONs spinal cords. VANEK is a BOSTON KILLER. JVR GRABO FRATTIN followed by MCCLAREN MCCLEMENT ORR TOUGH LINEUP to play against.

  19. Dupont is an idiot; he is so far off on everything he writes about the Bruins. That would be idiotic to try and land Campbell, he has a $7.1 million dollar cap hit through the 15-16 season and is already 33 yrs old, the B’s would never do that nor should they. Boyle would be a much better option if he is available; he has one more year at $6.6 and would be an upgrade from Andrew Ference next year who is a UFA, so the math adding Boyle and subtracting Ference who is $2.5 this year would make Boyle at $4.1 hypothetically, and they have the money this year to absorb the 6.6 because they moved Thomas and will have Marc Savard’s LTIR money. Then they can dump him after next year or re-negotiate. That makes way more sense then adding Campbell at this point.

Striet probably won’t be moved because the Islanders have found themselves in contention.
