  1. Despite being a rabid Habs fan in those days, I always liked Carl Brewer for exactly those qualities mentioned above.

I know for a fact he used to cut the palms out of his hockey gloves so, in goalmouth skirmishes, he could slip a hand through the hole to clutch an opponent’s sweater or stick. No one tipped to it for a long time 🙂

I also remember the time he became a commentator for the Stanley Cup playoffs – which was a common practice in those to bring in key players from eliminated teams to provide a bit of “color.” After the Habs won another Cup, he was front and center in the dressing room on CBC interviewing the victorious players, one of whom was old Leafs teammate Dick Duff. Sticking the mic under Duff’s nose he asked “so Dickie, tell the viewers what it’s like to be part of a real organization …” That went over like the proverbial lead balloon with the Smythes, almost as bad as when Ward Cornell, interviewing then Rangers goalie Gump Worsley between periods, asked him which team gave him the most trouble, to which he blandly replied “the Rangers.” He was later traded to the Habs.
