The Florida Panthers have traded goaltender Tim Thomas to the Dallas Stars for Dan Ellis.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Awwww, I was looking forward to the potential comedy of Thomas and new teammate Roberto Luongo over the rest of the season.

Seriously, however, the addition of Luongo made Thomas expendable. The Stars obviously hope to make the playoffs and needed an experienced backup for Kari Lehtonen who can also stand the heat of playoff competition.

Thomas isn’t the Vezina and Smythe-winning goalie he once was, but he should be a good addition for the Stars in their playoff push. Ellis was Lehtonen’s backup this season. He has a season remaining on his contract at an affordable $1 million ($900K cap hit). His addition likely spells the end of Scott Clemmensen’s tenure with the Panthers.
