Updates on Kadri, Boedker and Johansson – August 30, 2013.

With September fast approaching, Nazem Kadri, Mikkel Boedker and Marcus Johansson seem no closer to re-signing with their respective teams.

TORONTO SUN: Lance Hornby reports Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri won’t be speaking about his contract status until it is resolved, claiming only that “negotiations are continuing and the lines of communication are open”. Maple Leafs management also aren’t saying much about the status of talks, other than they’re going “back and forth”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Training camp opens in a week-and-a-half. The closer we get to that date without Kadri under contract, the greater the speculation over his future with the club.  As I’ve frequently noted, Kadri has no leverage other than to stage a holdout, which won’t help his case.

Coyotes' Mikkel Boedker remains unsigned.

Coyotes’ Mikkel Boedker remains unsigned.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Sarah McLellan reports the Phoenix Coyotes are still trying to get RFA forward Mikkel Boedker under contract before training camp opens. Coyotes assistant GM Brad Treliving remains optimistic of getting a deal done. McLellan doesn’t consider Boedker’s situation comparable to that of former Coyote Kyle Turris, whose two-month contract holdout early in the 2011-12 season lead to his trade to the Ottawa Senators.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Unlike Kadri, Boedker wasn’t coming off an entry-level contract, but he opted not to file for arbitration, possibly given the uncertainty at the time over the sale of the Coyotes. Boedker’s situation could bear watching in the coming couple of weeks.

CSNWASHINGTON.COM: Chuck Gormley speculates over the value of Capitals RFA forward Marcus Johansson, who like Kadri is coming off an entry-level contract. The Capitals currently have around $2.665 million in cap space. Gormley believes Johansson will either settle for a contract “in the $2.5 million range”, or the club will have to either move him or somebody else to make room for his contract.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Johansson’s in the same boat as Kadri.  If he can get $2.5 million on a one-year deal, he should take it and play his way toward a bigger payday.

  1. Just wanted to say thank you for everyone cutting me up the other day for posting about my idea that Miller would be a good fit in Colorado ……having no previous recolection of the fact that Colorado and Buffalo had been in discussions along with Edmonton now as well ……

You guys need to take it easy and really let people here discuss stuff ,,,,if all of you knew any better than anyone else Id guess you would all be named Bob Mckenzie ….so if that not you SHUT up and let people discuss stuff ….My post was hypothetical a few days a go and now the whole hockey world is discussing it !

    • Didn’t see the hatchet job…but I will say that it is absolutely necessary that Miller find a new home. He has not been the same since the Lucic freight train destroyed him. If you remember not one team mate stood up for him. I mean John Scott might reduce the chances of that happening again but I think that event said a lot about the Sabres.

Miler for Varmy or JS? Avs need some defense too?

    • Seen a lot of people getting ripped for entirely plausible transactions. Yours sound like a reasonable deal. It the same people who do this daily. Not enough love as a child I guess

  2. Great post Back checking. Armchair GMs are terrible at times. Everybody has an opinion about the NHL and as we all know from past experiences anything can happen in the NHL. People should feel comfortable posting their thoughts.More thoughts leads to more discussions.

  3. Regarding Boedker…is there really still a team in Phoenix? I thought they moved elsewhere?

    • the difference between boedker and turris is boedker can play hockey

    • They did, they moved to the burbs! They haven’t played in Phoenix for a number of years.

  4. Opinions are just that… opinions. They are neither right nor wrong… and people should not be trashed for providing them.

  5. A plea to stop being cut apart coming from the king of cutting people apart? Irony much.

    • Exactly this….maybe people just dont like the way you post your opinion, its not the opinion people have the issue with. Quit whining

      • Back checking never cuts people’s opinions up. You need to look in the mirror

        • Backchecking and you BG cut everyone else up, are negative about everything anyway then whine and complain when others call you out on your “opinions” or the way you express them to others. Go back thru all thes rumor posts and look. For the most part its all pretty civil until you guys show up then it turns into 75 100 comments of arguments. Im not saying I dont disagree with what people say, I do lots. (particularly you and your backwards thinking) but I dont think there is any need to come here and whine and complain about everybody else and call people names every time I show up the way you and backchecking do. Again quit whining.

          • I find it odd and sad that I see this each and everyday on here. Stop pointing fingers and complaining about and to each other and provide valid hockey points. If not exchange emails and do it there. You both have good ideas and view points on various subjects and I enjoy reading them, but it sucks having to read through these posts to find the good posts.

    • Hey, come on now, didn’t you know that some peoples opinions are more important than others. Geesh, where have you been?

  6. BTW the rumors are bogus according to the Sabers…

  7. opinions are like as*ho*es. everybody has one and they all stink.except mine of corse. jj-lol
