The latest speculation on potential destinations for Devils UFA winger Zach Parise, and a look at which teams remain in the bidding for prospect blueliner Justin Schultz.

Will Parise remain a Devil?

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson reports it’s unlikely Devils captain Zach Parise re-signs with the club before his eligibility for UFA status July 1. “The Red Wings, Kings, Rangers and Penguins loom as major suitors”, reports Everson.

PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Dejan Kovecevic calls on the Penguins to reward Sidney Crosby’s loyalty and willingness to accept less than market value to stick with the club by signing Parise.

PHILLY.COM: Sam Carchidi believes the Penguins signing Parise would be the Flyers “worst nightmare”.

WASHINGTON TIMES: Stephen Whyno believes the Capitals would be wise to pursue Parise.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It remains to be seen where Parise signs. Y’know, I hope he take his time and waits a few days before re-signing, just to heighten the drama over his ultimate decision. It would certainly add more excitement to what could otherwise be a quick, dull free agent period.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the Rangers are among the clubs attempting to woo UFA prospect blueliner Justin Schultz.

CSNPHILLY.COM: The Flyers reportedly aren’t on Schultz’s short list of preferred destinations.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly among the other five teams on Schultz’s “short list”. I suspect the Canucks and Oilers could be of most interest to the Kamloops Kelowna, BC, native.

  1. Schmidty says:

It continues to baffle me why these “reports” keep listing teams as the “main suitors” for Parise but they keep leaving off the Wild. They may not be the #1 or #3 TV market in the country, but it has been widely known that they will outbid all teams. They are a legit option for many other reasons other than he lives in Minny in the off-season.

Look for Minny to make Parise the highest paid player in the NHL and still offer a boat load to Suter also. Add to it, they have another $14 million coming off the books next year to tweak the team again if needed. Fletcher has done a great job setting up this team salary cap wise and he plans to spend it all to make that happen.

Schmidty, I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s a well run orginization with the talent finally starting to show. Cap space is at an all time high and Fletcher will throw the entire account at Parise. How much he is willing to reach for both Parise AND Suter is the interesting part.

Sometimes its not all about the money – I think a part of it is potential. So therein lies the question – is MN a player or two away from being a SC contender. In all honesty – I’d love to see it happen as it could definately make Parisi that “missing piece” that brought skill, a winning attitude and leadership to the group. Whereas going to the Rangers or Philly he’s just another keyplayer amongst others. To me, what is the difference between $8MM a year or $10MM – the one thing I am sure of….the taxes in MN must be lower than the taxes in NY.

I think Minn could shock the hockey world and actually be able to sign both Parise and Suter. That is part of the reason they traded for Suters good friend Tom Gilbert.

  3. Geoff says:

I’m guessing Schutlz signs with Vancouver (his home province) or Edmonton (still close to home but also a very exciting up and coming team).

  4. robert e says:

I think parise ends up in Minny but Suter is going to Detroit. Than dominoes will start to fall with Nash traded to the Rangers, Ryan traded to the Flyers and Jagr signing with Calgary.
As for the dmen, Carle lands back with the Flyers, Garrison maybe Minny, maybe Ottawa.

    • Ryan says:

And I say your our of your mind if you think the pens don’t land one between Parise, Suter, Ryan, or Nash

  5. Dynamo45 says:

Not sure how true it is, but I heard that Shultz parents are Canucks season ticket holders? If true, one would think that it’s a no brainer where he signs. Calgry is one of the oldest teams in the NHL, and signing Jagr would be just a step back imo.

  6. Bruce says:

Seems as if Edmonton is the best opportunity for Schlutz. I don’t know how far Edmonton is below the floor but Bouwmeester could a good partner to bring in for him if Calgary doesn’t mind dumping him off to a rival.

  7. Peterman says:

Wouldn’t it be amazing if the Preds signed Suter and Parise? I’m not a fan, but I cheer underdogs.

  8. Jim says:

There is no doubt in my mind that as of Sunday Zach Parise will be a Pittsburgh Penguin, all signs are pointing to that. He hasn’t signed with the Devils yet and his good buddy Crosby signed for far less money than he couldve got on the open market to leave room for Parise. The Pens have promised Sid a scoring winger since he has got to the team and now here is Shero’s opportunity and he is gonna make it happen. Mark my word I guarantee Parise will be a Penguin. As for Suter I believe he will stay with a western conference team and Rick Nash will go to the New York Rangers.
