Ryan Kesler on his recovery from hip surgery, Chris Mason becomes the first Jet to hit the ice in Winnipeg, the Oilers hire Duane Sutter as a scout, and Rogers Sportsnet releases their schedule of Senators games for this season.

VANCOUVER CANUCKS.

VANCOUVER SUN: Ian Walker reports Canucks center Ryan Kesler recently comments on his recovery from hip surgery, saying there’s been “small victories here and there”. Kesler said he’s now off crutches and plans to start skating in the next couple of weeks in hopes of being ready for the team’s season-opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Good news for Canucks fans, though I would caution Kesler not to push too hard to get back in shape, otherwise he risks re-injuring himself.

WINNIPEG JETS.

WINNIPEG SUN: reports goaltender Chris Mason became the first Jet to hit the practice rink in Winnipeg.

“I just got a tour of the rink last night and it’s just so exciting,” Mason told CBC. “My dad was with me and we got a chance to go see the rooms and take a peek at the rink and all that. It’s really exciting.

“We’re starting to see all the Jets logos and the signs on the buildings downtown on Portage Avenue was pretty cool. It just feels real and I’m super excited.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Guess this means Mason isn’t one of those Jets rumored seeking a trade because the city of Winnipeg was too small to suit their needs…;)

EDMONTON OILERS.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: Jim Matheson reports the Oilers have hired former NHL player and coach Duane Sutter as a scout.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Several of the Sutter brothers worked, or have worked, for the Calgary Flames, but this is the first time one of them has worked for the Oilers.

OTTAWA SENATORS.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: reports Rogers Sportsnet will carry 52 Senators games on their network, with 45 of them carried on Sportsnet East, and the other seven on the Sportsnet Sens network.
