Updates on the Canucks – May 19, 2013.

It could take time to rebuild the Canucks.

Could the Canucks shop Alexander Edler this June?

Could the Canucks shop Alexander Edler this June?

VANCOUVER SUN: Iain MacIntyre believes there’s no quick fix for the Canucks problems. Fixing their limited cap space should be addressed by trading Roberto Luongo and buying out defenseman Keith Ballard, but MacIntyre suggests Canucks management use caution in the UFA market this summer. He doubts they could afford David Clarkson, Ryane Clowe or Nathan Horton, while lesser lights such as Guillaume Latendresse, Raffi Torres, Eric Nystrom, Bryan Bickell won’t come cheap.

He feels Alexander Edler makes the most sense as a trade chip, wondering if he might fetch someone like Philadelphia’s Sean Couturier, Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader, or Colorado’s Jamie McGinn. MacIntyre also noted GM Mike Gillis was non-committal over asking any of his players with no-trade clauses if they would waive them.

VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Jason Botchford noted how well the Sedins were playing with Loui Eriksson as their linemate at the World Hockey Championships. He  noted the Stars are apparently shopping Eriksson, but believes the Canucks need a center more than a winger.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Trading Luongo may be easier said than done, and the Canucks might have to pick up part of his salary to get a deal done. Edler is likely their most marketable trade chip. The Flyers might be interested, but the Wings have promising Dan DeKeyser, which could take them out of the market for a puck-moving blueliner. As for the Avs, they need a physical stay-at-home blueliner, not someone like Edler. I still don’t buy into the theory the Stars would shop Eriksson, as such a move leaves them dangerously weak on the right side. If they were to move him, however, the theory is they would want a first-line center in return, which rules out the Canucks as a destination.

  1. For 11th overall? Haha, no. Im sure someone like Edler, being young as well should and will most likely cost the flyers Couturier. If they are not willing to give him up, then they should look elsewhere. Heck I’ll even throw in Keith Ballard to sweeten the deal (he’s really not that bad, and AV never gave him a real chance to succeed, having to look over his shoulder every time he’s on the ice and he’s great in the locker room)

  2. Flyers need to stop trading away their young talent. Buy out the Cosmonaut, Stalin sympathizer and use the savings on a puck mover. The team overall is pretty good. Add a FA or put another offer sheet out there and improve that way. Mason showed that he can be counted on and they have some possibilities in the system for back up goalie and possible successor down the road (or maybe use the 11th overall for a D or even a future goalie). Either way Bryz has got to go. If they stop selling off the young talent they can put together a nice long run.

  3. Spector, you might have mixed up the Avs needs with another team. I don’t know about an Edler for McGinn trade, but they absolutely need an offensive blueliner. It’s by far their #1 need. There’s no need for a physical defensive D man, unless he’s one of the better ones like Skuderi, and they also dump a few other guys like Zanon and O’Brien.

  4. Flyeredup, Mason is as much a head case as comrade Bryz is. He’s got shell shock and it may take a while for him to get over it. Again, if you trade for Edler, you get a young, physical, puck moving defenceman. May I suggest a three way, Louie Errikson to Vancouver, Edler to Philly, Couturier to Dallas. It’s pretty much even IMHO.

  5. Foppa, I’ll send you Alex burrows for Mcginn, Burrows plays his heart out, plays to win and bleeds for his team. I would hate to see him go, but Van needs some size.

  6. I’m pretty sure the avs will not need a physical dman as u can be certain that seth jones will more than fill that role for them

  7. Why not swap Loui Eriksson for Ryan Kesler with some spare parts thrown in from each side?

  8. Kelser, Edler, Schneider and 1st (2013) to phi for Giroux, L. Schenn or Coburn, Talbot, 1st (2013)
Phi gets a really good goalie and puck moving deman and good center. Van gets a great center, physical deman, and a Stanley cup winner, and better draft pick.
Van can then trade the sedins or wait to let them walk after next season.
Canucks need to make changes and phily needs a goalie and deman.
Luongo is equal to Schneider and in two years Schneider will have a higher cap hit than luongo.
